Census Lookup and Resource Requests / COX family in London 1881 Census
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 16:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been boggling my brain trying to find my COX family in the 1881 Census and was hoping some fresh eyes, and more expertise than I have, might help, please!  :)

I have them in the 1871 census at 20 Compton Street, St James, Clerkenwell
John Cox 36 Fire wood cutter born St Lukes
Sarah Cox 30 St Lukes
Ann Cox 8 St Lukes
Jane Cox 6 St Lukes
John Cox 4 St Lukes
Thomas Cox 2 Cripplegate
Joseph D Cox 1m Clerkenwell

I have them in the 1891 census at 165 Skidmore Street, Mile End Old Town
John Cox 54 Fire Wood Cutter St Lukes, London
Sarah Cox 51 St Lukes, London
John Cox 24 Oilman St Lukes, London
Jane Cox 26 Tailoress Cripplegate, London
Martha Cox 18 Tailoress St Lukes, London
Fredk Cox 16 Wood Cutter Dalston, London
Robert Cox 13 Scholar Dalston, London
Arthur Cox 4 Stepney, London

I have tried all sorts of things to try and find even just one of them in the 1881 census but have failed miserably. I checked on Findmypast and it seemed to imply there was nothing major missing from the 1881 census but if anyone knows better, please do say..

I wondered if they might be in a workhouse or somewhere only under initials perhaps but wouldn't know where to start with that.

Robert was the last child to be born before 1881 and he was born in Dalston, apparently (Shoreditch Reg District on GRO). I don't have his Birth Cert but will get it if need be. I cannot find his baptism, or his brother Frederick's - also born Dalston.

I am having a tough time tracing the children Ann Cox and Thomas Cox after 1871 so confirmation of their 1881 whereabouts would be very useful.

Any help would be gratefully received - many thanks.

Family History Beginners Board / EVANS & JOLLIFFE - married each other twice?
« on: Wednesday 11 September 19 10:31 BST (UK)  »
I was hoping to get a more experienced perspective please on whether anyone has seen one couple marrying twice before. This seems to have happened with Evan EVANS and Edith Mary JOLLIFFE. There is a marriage entry for them on the 28th February 1908 in Cardiff, Glamorgan and then again on 23rd February 1909 in Devizes, Wiltshire. I have the certificate for the Cardiff marriage and the online image of the Register for the Devizes marriage and the details seem to match up but does anyone have any ideas as to why they would do this and even if it would have been legal? The simple answer might be that the groom was Welsh from Glamorgan and the bride was originally from Devizes but this happens often in family history and I have never seen two separate marriage entries. Thanks very much for any input.

Cardiganshire / Location of place Penllain from 1851 Census (Gwnnws Lower)
« on: Thursday 29 August 19 17:31 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find the location of the 1851 residence of my 3 x GG parents John EVANS & Mary EVANS (nee JONES). It appears to be "Penllain" and is apparently in Gwnnws Lower. I have had a look at an older map and can't see anything obvious but may very well have missed it. Other place names on the same/next census page are: Tyngrayg, Dolchgenog, Troedrhyw, Penybryn, Tyngraig, Tynewydd, Pantfynon, Blaenmilwyn, Tymawr & Abermilwin (though I am not sure if there is a logical route taken in such a rural census?). If anyone with some local knowledge or a keen eye for maps might be able to help please - that would be great. Thank you (and apologies for any spelling errors with the place names - I have done my best to transcribe the census as I see it).

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Marriage for George HERBERT Chesham
« on: Monday 24 September 18 14:50 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage of my 4 x Great Grandfather George HERBERT to Esther (Unknown, possibly GEORGE). The only clue I have is a Settlement Examination for George HERBERT from St Martin in the Fields, Westminster in 1825 where it states that they were married in Chesham, Bucks in 1808. From the 1851 census it appears Esther was born in Lincolnshire but I do not know the birthplace of George HERBERT (perhaps Chesham!) as he seems to have died before 1841. Any help would be greatly appreciated to confirm the marriage and therefore the surname of my 4 x Great Grandmother. Many thanks, Bev

Hello everyone,
I am stuck in my research of my Herbert family in Westminster, London and could really use some experienced help as to where I might look next please or perhaps someone much brighter than me may be able to offer new threads to follow up?

I would like to try and find birth/baptism records and a marriage for my 4x Gt Grandparents George & Esther Herbert. I do not know Esther's maiden name. An ancestry profile I found gives it as Esther George but I have no actual evidence of this. I do not have their dates of birth confirmed - Esther is possibly abt 1786. I have no birthplace for George and Esther is listed as born in "Lincolnshire" in 1851 census. I have no idea where to start with something as broad as "Lincolnshire"!

I began to think they may be non-conformists and a couple of their addresses I think tied in with Huguenot churches and Scots churches. I have searched the non-conformist registers online but found nothing massively enlightening (Esther Herbert potentially pops up as a burial 1852/53).

I have read up about the Huguenots and wondered if Herbert was a possible Huguenot name in this area at this time or before so if anyone has easy access to these records and can advise whether it would be a line of enquiry worth pursuing or not, that would be great too.

What follows is an idea of what I do know about them - I have also tried to fill in the children's lives - their marriages, children and census records but have not yet found any particularly illuminating clues.

I know that my 2x Gt Grandfather was William Herbert (I have his birth cert) born 23 March 1851 Lambeth, Surrey to George Herbert, shoemaker and Rachel Elizabeth Gibbs. They were living at 69 White Horse Street, Lambeth.

I have found George Herbert (3x Gt Grandfather) (with Rachel and family) in the census records as follows:
1841 age 25 (b.1816) White Horse Street, Lambeth, shoemaker, born in county
1851 age 37 (b.1814) 69 White Horse Street, Lambeth, shoemaker, born St James, Middlesex
1861 age 46 (b.1815) 10 Gibson Street, Lambeth, Boot Maker, born St James, Middlesex
1871 age 56 (b. 1815) 10 Gibson Street, Lambeth, Boot Maker, born Middlesex
(I believe George & Rachel both died in Hastings in 1877)

I have a list of their children from looking at the census records and baptism records.

I searched for baptism of George Herbert abt. 1815 at St James Westminster and one record came up that seemed to fit.

George Herbert s. of George (4x Gt Grandfather) & Esther Herbert, shoemaker, living in Swallow Street
d.o.b. 16 April 1814
Bapt date 6 June 1816

He is baptised in a "batch" with older brother Joseph (b. 1812) and younger brother James (b.1816)

Further records searches show another 5 possible children:
John b. Sept 1818, bap. Sept 1818 St James Piccadilly, shoemaker, Swallow Street
? Mary Anne b. 1821 bap. May 1821 St Martin in the Fields, cordwainer, 4 Moores Yard
? Francis William b. 1823 bap. May 1823 St Martin in the Fields, cordwainer, 4 Moores Yard
(parents given as George and Easther (sic) for the two records above and occupation cordwainer - which I believe was quite specific when compared to shoemaking, rather than an easy substitute for, so I am not sure about these two children yet)
Thomas b. 1825? bap. Jan 1831 St James Piccadilly, shoemaker, Hopkins Street
William b. 1829? bap. Jan 1831 St James Piccadilly, shoemaker, Hopkins Street
(I struggled to read the date of birth column for the above two records but it looked to me like born 6 years ago and born 1 year 9 months ago respectively - this seems odd to me though!)

I cannot find a potential George Herbert (sen) in the 1841 census or further.

Possible (but not convinced) Esther in 1841 census:
Catherine Street, St Margaret Westminster
Hester Herbert 60 (though poss 40?) Independent Not born in County
Sophia Bleaklye 30 (poss 50?) Independent Not born in county

Probable Esther in 1851 census
2 Cock Court, St James Westminster
Esther Herbert (head) Widow 65 (1786) b. Lincolnshire
William Herbert (son) UM 21 (1830) Smith b. Middlesex

(next door there is a Joseph and John Herbert with family - probably her two sons and also a family of Gillards who may in fact be Joseph Herbert's "wife" and children)

My apologies for the large block of info but I don't want to waste anyone's time going over what I already know. If anyone can offer a fresh perspective or fresh info please, it would be greatly appreciated. I am also a little daunted by the whole London records selection so again, any advice about what records might help would be great.

Thanks in advance

Bev

Kent / Charing Kent - Birth Cert help please
« on: Friday 24 July 15 12:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have recently received my great grandfathers birth certificate (born 1885) through the post.

Under "when and where born" it gives the date and then says "Charing" and what appears to be R.S.C. underneath. I wonder if anyone can enlighten me as to what R.S.C. might be please? I am not 100% certain of the "C" but the R.S. is pretty clear I think.

The other "strange" thing I think is that the Father is listed as resident in "Ash". Is this likely to be Ash near Sandwich (which seems to be quite a way from Charing) or possibly some other place nearby that would have also been Ash? I know that the mother was born in Ash next Sandwich but, as a whole, this is a pretty elusive family (I have another rather extensive thread open about them on Rootschat) so any clues I can glean from this certificate might fill in some blanks.

Other info, just in case:
Registration District: West Ashford
Sub District: Calehill
County: Kent
Date of birth: 22nd September 1885
Name: George
Sex: Boy
Father: Thomas Rose
Mother: Ann Rose, formerly Ansell (I know she was not actually married to Thomas until 1924)
Occupation of father: Tinman
Informant: Thomas Rose, father, Ash
Registrar: Edward Langley

From an ancestry "index only" record I know that George was baptised on the 4th Oct in Little Chart, Kent but have not had sight of the original to know any further info about residence etc.

Any insights would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Southampton - Hollins family
« on: Monday 15 June 15 14:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find information on Sarah Hollins, born Southampton possibly 1802-1806.
On another thread regarding my larger family someone mentioned a baptism for Sarah Grace or Hollings with parents Richard Grace and Sarah Hollings (I think the actual names should have been Sarah Hollins, daughter of Richard Grace Hollins and Sarah) I wonder if anyone has access to any records with confirmation of the father's occupation or their address please?

Further to this, any information on the Hollins family from Southampton (it seems to be a fairly unusual name for this area) would be greatly appreciated. For instance -  I have some information that Richard Grace Hollins was baptised 1778, son of John Hollins and Mary but I have seen him down as the son of George Hollins and Mary on some public trees on ancestry.

Perhaps there are other children for Richard Grace Hollins and Sarah?

Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Bev

Armed Forces / Help with military information from Kent newspaper article please
« on: Monday 15 September 14 18:23 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I have an article from the Deal, Walmer and Sandwich Mercury Saturday April 8th 1916. It is entitled "Fighting Family" and is about my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Rose and his family. I have no real knowledge of anything military but imagine that I may be able to follow up some of the information that the article gives if only an expert someone could help with some of the terms please. For example, it would be great to know more about the different divisions they belonged to, what that would have involved, where I might be able to look for more detail/info etc. I have already spent a bit of time looking into the Royal West Kent Regt and it seems that I will be hard pushed to find any documents relating to Thomas Rose and his service there but what about the National Reserve? Local Guards? Special Company? I have no idea what this was in the context of Kent (or nationally!)

Many thanks in advance if you can help :)

I will write out the article in full:

There is a montage photo of all the family in their uniforms but the copy isn't very clear.
Cadet David Rose, Depot RMLI Cadet Corps
Mr T. Rose, late R.W. Kent Regt., National Reserve (Thomas)
Sapper S. Rose R.N.D.E. (Stephen)
Sapper P.C. Rose, R.N.D.E. (Percival Charles)
Gunner G. Rose, R.G.A. (George)
Sapper H.T. Rose, R.N.D.E. (Henry Thomas)
Sapper A.J. Rose, R.N.D.E. (Albert John)
Pte J.S. Curtis, The Buffs (son in law)

"The group forms a highly creditable family record. Mr Rose, senr. the father, who lives at 5 New Street , Deal, is himself an old soldier, having served formerly in the Royal West Kent Regt. and he is a member of the National Reserve, having served in the local guards, and volunteered when the Special Company was formed, but age barred him. Four sons wear the globe and laurel, which without the bugle of the light infantry was adopted from the Marines as the cap badge of the Divisional Engineers, Royal Naval Division. All of these have fought in the Dardanelles, Sapper H.T. Rose was wounded there and Sapper S. Rose saw a lot of fighting till, suffering from dysentry, he was invalided home. Sapper A.J. Rose was one of the last to leave the peninsula and he, as well as Sapper P.C. Rose, is still on active service somewhere with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. The gunner has been "somewhere in France" since the outbreak of war, and the same is the case with Pte. Curtis of the Buffs. The youngest son, wearing the uniform of the Depot R.M. Cadet Corps is obtaining instruction in that fine nursery for the services, which will fit him to uphold the eminently honourable record of his family in the present war. This forms one more of the instances, of which there are several in our locality, in which all the male members of military age, have voluntarily come forward for the defence of their country's cause, and seven members actually in the service of the King is a record not easily beaten".

Family History Beginners Board / Thomas ROSE - my personal brick wall
« on: Tuesday 26 August 14 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I am trying to push my family tree back beyond my great great grandfather Thomas Rose and his parents George Rose and Sarah Hollins. I was hoping that someone might have some information or just even some advice of other avenues to follow up please. This is what I have so far and also what I can't seem to find! I apologise that this is somewhat of a disorganised list.

I have Thomas Rose's birth certificate. He was born in Old Town, Croydon 29th January 1853. His father is George Rose, a Tailor and his mother Sarah Rose, formerly Hollins. His mother is noted as residing in Old Town Croydon. I found a baptism entry (online) for a Thomas Rose, parents George and Sarah Rose, abode Croydon, profession of father: tailor. Date of baptism 31st January 1853 at St John the Baptist, Croydon.

I checked St John the Baptist (online) register going back and could find no marriage for George Rose and Sarah Hollins (I probably need to double check this). I checked BMD 1837 onwards and found no marriage for George Rose and Sarah Hollins. I checked St John the baptist going forward and back from 1853 and could find no more children registered for this George and Sarah. I could not find an obvious entry for them in the 1851 Croydon (or any other) census and the same for 1861. I have been unable to confirm for certain ANY George and Sarah Rose in any census. The difficulty being I have no real information to test any results against.

Thomas Rose's first son (that I can find) was born in 1885 in Little Chart, Kent (George Rose), his second child in Canterbury 1887 (Henry Thomas) and the remaining children (that I know of) were all born in Deal, Kent. He is on the 1891 census in Deal, Kent. The 1901 census for Deal is missing but I assume he was probably on it! The 1911 census shows Thomas and his "wife" Annie (Ansell) still in Deal. It says they have been married 26 years and had 14 children (11 living, 3 died). They, in fact, were not married until 1924 and were both listed on their marriage certificate as widow and widower. I do not have any confirmed record of Thomas Rose's first marriage or any death of a first wife but have the details for Annie, whose husband died before she had any dealings with Thomas (apparently!). Thomas died Nov 1927 in Deal.

I have baptism records for most of Thomas's children and military records for a number of the boys BUT none that provide any further info or clues to Thomas and his parents. Thomas's occupation is variously listed as tinman/cutler/hawker/marine store dealer and they seemed to move around a lot from address to address in Deal.

I have a Deal newspaper article (April 1916) that states Thomas Rose had formerly served in the Royal West Kent Regiment and that he is a member of the National Reserve - but no further details. There are two Thomas Rose's listed in medal rolls prior to WWI but I have no way to clarify a link to my Thomas. I thought any military papers might give details of his father or earlier address but it doesn't look too hopeful at NA for any records that I could see.

Family "tales" suggest that Thomas may have spent considerable time visiting Guildford, Surrey and that this was potentially secretive (perhaps his first wife?! though how true this is I don't know). There is also talk that Rose might actually have been derived from a Jewish Rosenberg or similar but I wouldn't know where to start with that.

Anyway, this is what I know (in a rather large nutshell) so if anyone has any pointers that would be great. I plan on visiting Croydon archives in a few weeks to explore newspapers etc and will also be taking a trip to Deal to try and gather more clues.

Many thanks

Beverley
