Northumberland / Bedlington Burial
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 16:52 BST (UK)  »
The biggest stumbling block I've encountered in my family history research is in locating a death for my 3 x great grandmother Elizabeth Riddell.

Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Brookbanks in Newcastle in 1820. I have found her in the 1871-1891 census. The last census entry I can find (1891) shows that she was living in Main Street, Bedlington with Robert Tanney (a lodger). Robert later went on to marry Elizabeth's grand daughter, Frances Britton, however this is the last entry I can find for Elizabeth.

I've checked out all of the GRO death entries registered at Morpeth and none of these relate to my Elizabeth. I've also checked the burial records for Cambois and Bedlington cemeteries - but again with no success. Interestingly, last time I visited the Northumberland Records Office I'm convinced I discovered a gap in the burials register between 1891 and 1901. Indeed a chance conversation with someone a few years back leads me to believe that some of the burial records for Bedlington were destroyed in a fire at the cemetery.

Not being able to find a death I have been considering whether she might have remarried - but again I can't find anything. Would she really have married after 1891? She was widowed in 1868.

Does anyone else have any relatives in Bedlington that they can't find a burial for? Or if anyone has any information on Elizabeth please do let me know. Many thanks.
