Inverness / Masson family in Croy, Inverness. MI's please
« on: Sunday 21 December 14 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for births in the Croy area but cannot find them at all. Looking at other posts here I see that the records are in a bad state and illegible. I presume that is the same for marriages in the area.
In the hope that I can find some clues, does anyone have the M.I's for the area? I am looking for -
William Masson and his wife Christian Eadie/Edie/Eddie both born approximately 1760 - 1770. They had a daugher Isobel born 1791 [found this birth] and Donald born c1807. There could be other children but I haven't found them.
Donald Masson [c1807] married a Margaret Grey/Gray in 1830, Inverness-shire and they had 8 children, all born Croy. Again some are recorded, others not. I cannot find Donald Masson born c1840 but do have his  marriage to Amelia Grant in Forres as well as his children, also in the Forres area.
I would be grateful for any help. Thank you in advance.

Berwickshire / Swinton and Simprin monumental inscriptions
« on: Monday 06 May 13 18:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Does anyone have the pre 1855 Berwickshire Monumental Inscriptions for Swinton/Simprin or any other cemetery in that area. If so I wonder if you would be kind enough to look up the following people:
George Lindsay b c1770. Must have died pre 1841.
His wife Isabel Jaffrey b c 1780. She was in Swinton in 1841.
Thank you.

Some of you were kind enough to help me with dating of other photos. I have had the following photos on the Berwickshire forum to see if anyone recognized the building. To help with the search I wonder if someone can give me an approximate date for them. The cards measure 4" x 2 1/2" and the actual photos measure 3 1/2" x 2 1/4". There is nothing on the back of either photo, unfortunately, apart from the larger group one and all it says at one end in pencil is 2 doz and at the other end no 6. That isn't any help.
Thank you.

Please can someone help me date these photographs which were given to me just recently. Is it possible that the person in the first photo could be the same person 2nd from right in next photo?

Berwickshire / found photo of Isabella Robertson, Dunse possibly c1860/70's
« on: Tuesday 19 March 13 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
In case anyone in the Dunse area is a descendant of Isabella I am posting this photo that I found in an old photo album just last week. I am not sure of the date but looking at the carte de visite information on the restoration and dating forum I am taking a guess that it was sometime in the 1860's or 1870's.
As far as I know Isabella is not related to my family but the photo is in the same album as my great grandmother.

Berwickshire / Help, please. Are these photos taken in/near Dunse?
« on: Saturday 16 March 13 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandparents lived in Dunse and I have recently been given an old album of photos taken in Dunse by photographers, D Davidson of Castle Street, Dunse and George Bruce, Mansefield, Dunse. The photo of the house was taken by D Davidson. Unfortunately the other two have nothing on the back. They look as though they were of a school. Can anyone identify the house or the school building?

Northumberland / Clyne/McClain/McLean c1874/75 Berwick upon Tweed
« on: Sunday 01 May 11 19:49 BST (UK)  »
This is my brick wall. I know almost everything about my grandmother but despite years of searching I can't find her birth. The extended family usually had their children baptised in the RC Church, Berwick but Mary Ann is not there.
I will try to keep all the information as simple as possible.
Mary Ann Clyne [ in census records in Scotland the surname was McClain or McLean]
mother: Rebecca Clyne who was baptised in Berwick 1854 - daur of Michael Clyne and Rebecca
                      Higgins
1879  Rebecca married William Collin in the Church of Scotland, Eyemouth.
There was a son James Collin b 1881, Berwick who was not in the RC records.
After that there were 2 children baptised in the RC Church Berwick.
1881 Eyemouth
Mary Ann McClain , 6 step-daughter of William Collin; mother Rebecca; born Berwick.
1891 Eyemouth
Mary A Clyne,  17, step daur, Gen Ser, born Berwick on Tweed
1901 Chirnside
Mary Ann McLean Collin, 26, daur, Paper Finisher, born England
1901 Marriage, Chirnside
Mary Anne [Clym] Collin - but mother's maiden name given as McLean [Rebecca]; father William Collin
Every time I come back to this I feel I should be able to find her so I trawl through the births again. I have also been to Edinburgh to look at the records there, but, again, no success.
If anyone can come up with any ideas I will be so, so grateful!
Thanks for reading this far!

Armed Forces / 3rd Class Chaubattia 1934
« on: Friday 07 May 10 19:16 BST (UK)  »
I have just received my late father's army service papers which said that he was 'awarded 3rd Class, Chaubattia , 31.8.1934'. This was during his year in India with the Q.O. Cameron Highlanders. It is written in the section:
Army School and other certificates of Education.
Does this mean that he sat some sort of exam out there?
He told stories of his time there and mentioned going to Ranikhet. However, perhaps his main time was spent in Chaubattia which seems to be in the hills near Ranikhet.
Has anyone anyknowledge of the 3rd class award?
