England / Uthersall/Huthersall Lancs/Cheshire
« on: Saturday 11 October 14 21:25 BST (UK)  »
I recently came across this gang in the 1851 census, living in Manchester. I have also found the marriage of William and Isabella, in Eccles/Pendleton 1844, where her name is given as Huthersall and her father is an engraver. I can't find any matches in 1841. I am guessing that Robert must be Isabella's brother. Perhaps I am being unusually dim! Can anyone find the (H)uthersalls in 1841?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Jewish given name....
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 09:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks, this from the 1841 census, specifically HO/107/1088/1 for address High Street, St Saviour, Southwark.
The transcription is IMO correct, except for this name. The family were Jewish, but did not go in for 'exotic' Hebrew naming, viz,
 Julia
 Israel
 Stoher
 Lewis
 Isaac
 Simeon
 Elizabeth
 Sophia
 Adam
 Rachel
I have looked at databases of jewish given names and find no Stoher, (occasionally as a family name)
Looking back at it, I have my doubts about 'Lewis' as well, especially as father was named Levi
Any ideas for a more likely interpretation of 'Stoher', please?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Sampson family Cheetham
« on: Wednesday 01 October 14 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi Guys, I have found this part of my family from 1851 onwards, but have failed so far in tracking them to 1841. They could of course have been out of the country on census night, but I wonder if any of you more expert researchers can track them down, in 1841, or before 1851: They lived in and around York St, (Cheetham Hill) Manchester. The name is sometimes spelled Samson. Althouh the last child, Rachel, is born in London, they are back in Cheetham Hill after this date.

Levi Sampson           b abt 1783                     in "Holland"
Sarah Sampson        b btw 1801 and 1806  in Liverpool
Bets(e)y Sampson    b abt 1830                     in Manchester
Sophia Samson        b abt 1835                     in Manchester
Adam Sampson        b abt 1838                     in Manchester
Rach(a)el Sampson b abt 1841                     in London (Southwark)

I have found an extensive family tree online, converted from a GEDCOM file using GED2WEB. If I download the whole site, using wget or similar, would it be possible to convert back to GEDCOM for import into a genealogical software?
The index of names is here:

Isle of Man Lookup Requests / Griffiths, Moore; Manx Marriage, further details needed?
« on: Thursday 25 September 14 08:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys! I am trying to connect my Manx family together. I have index records, but have been unable to fill in details. The family is that of John Griffiths, Married to Elizabeth (P?) Moore, on 12 June 1864
Children are:
  • Robert John, b 1865
  • Edward Owen, b 4 Jan 1867
  • William A(rthur) b 4 March 1870
In later census data, Robert John gives his place of birth as Glen Maye, (He married a Manxwoman, Miriam Moore in Manchester..
Edward Owen is later found (1891) living on the mainland, at Barrow-in-Furness

Now, John Griffiths' POB is given in census data as "WALES" (1871) and "North Wales"(1881)
What would be the best way to pin him down to an individual? The records seem to be from German, Kirk-German or Peel. Can I see parish or other records anywhere? Baptisms of the children, or the Marriage?
Elizabeth is clearly given as Elizabeth P in 1881, but a different initial in 1871?

(From census, 1871 RG10/5771 Michael St, Peel)
Also her DOB is variously 1837, 1831 and 1833. Unless, of course John made a habit of marrying various ladies named Elizabeth!
I have read 'somewhere' that the records of the IOM religious institutions are held by the LDS(?) Can I see them at a LDS family history centre? Does every centre hold a copy, or do I have to pre-order? I have also read that they can be purchased on CD, from the LDS in Salt Lake City, for pennies, is this true?

Lancashire / Manchester Newspapers
« on: Tuesday 23 September 14 15:35 BST (UK)  »
I have recently found one of my forebears was a bit of a wrong 'un (no surprise there). I have found indexes to sentencing to hard labour in the 1860's 1870's. Are there any on line transcripts of court proceedings etc, i would like to know more about his 'crimes' He has a quite distinctive name, Adolphus Pixton (sometimes recorded as Pickstone)

The Common Room / Connections, How to be sure? Beginner type question.
« on: Tuesday 23 September 14 12:19 BST (UK)  »
I might being having a temporary brain-fail, not unusual. I have found a family which I am fairly certain is that of my GGrandfather. But how do I join the dots? The family in Q is that of Adam and Leah Sampson, living on own means as boarders in a lodging house in  9 Temple Street, Brighton in the 1891 census, RG12/815.
Are they on holiday there perhaps?
My GGrandfather is Montague S. Sampson, 1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census
162 Hermitage Road Finsbury Park N, Tottenham, Middlesex, England.
RG14PN7297 RG78PN355 RD132 SD3 ED20SN105
Montague E.,  mentioned there is my grandfather.
How can I be sure that they are the same person, before tunnelling in to Adam and Leah, and finding later that they are a different family?
And on an even more noobie question, how do I look up those RG references on FindMyPast? I have an account!
