Norfolk Lookup Requests / One last shot at this one!
« on: Saturday 23 December 06 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
This one is driving me absolutely bonkers.  I have my GGFx4 Edward Horstead buried 1827 in Ketteringham, date shows he was born 1735.  Alongside him, his wife Elizabeth Selby buried 1826 born 1741.

I have all their children born from 1765 onwards.  I have a settlement certificate when they moved in 1760 from Ketteringham, Norfolk to East Carleton Norfolk ("and any child or children they may have")

HOWEVER  I cannot find their marriage at all in any of th surrounding villages/parishes.  It is driving me mad.  Horstead is a localised Norfolk or Northamptonshire name.  Selby is definitely not a local Norfolk name - very rare indeed in the area even in 1841.

Can anyone suggest where else I can look for this couple?  I have a possible father in John Horstade (sic) and Bridget Pilgrim marrying in Great Ellingham in 1733 BUT no way I can connect Edward to this couple either.

Any help , fresh ideas, eyes, brains would be appreciated.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Selby in Norfolk

 ???

I am trying to trace the birth/marriage of Elizabeth Selby born 1741 and married to Edward Horstead bn 1735.

They are buried at Ketteringham, Norfolk and the earliest info I have is a settlement certificate when they moved to East Carleton (both Henstead) in April 1763.

But from where did they come before Ketteringham?  Cant find them in PR.  Selby is a rare name for Norfolk at that time.

Anyone know of a clutch of Selbys in the county please?

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / BURGH LE MARSH LINCOLN LOOK UP PLEASE
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 08:32 BST (UK)  »
 :-*

I would be so grateful if someone could help with this problem.

I have a William Castledine Wyles marrying a Catherine Allford in 1831 London - shown as cabinet maker.

In 1841 he is living with Catherine and daughter Mary Ann in Southwark shown as upholsterer "not of this county", aged rounded to 35 years old.

I have found a marriage between a Ben Wyles (or Wiles) and Mary Castledine in Woolsthorpe, Lincs in 1799 which seem possible parents.

I have found a baptism of a William son of Ben Wiles (sic) and "Mary" on the IGI 7.10.1802 in Burgh le March (sic).

I had thought this was a likely match but another researcher of this family has called into question that MY William Castledine Wyles is the son of Ben Wyles and Mary Castledine.

Can anyone please help prove or disprove this?  PLEASE. :-\

I should add that he cannot be found on the 1851 or any later census.  There is a possible death in 1858 and he is not shown as deceased at his daughter's marriage in 1853.

Norfolk / Selby Family Norfolk

 ???

Having triumphed in tracing my family back from the East End to Norfolk I have been stumped by my Great Grandparents x 4 - Edward Horstead born 1735 and Elizabeth Selby born 1742.  I can find them from 1770 onwards, living in Ketteringham and in fact buried there but no trace of them before that.  I have sat and looked at microfiche until my eyes ache and have covered about 12 parishes so far.

Selby is not a common Norfolk Name.  Does anyone know of a clutch of them anywhere in Norfolk which may be the place of origin of Elizabeth.  Many thanks.

The Common Room / 1837? Marriage
« on: Wednesday 16 June 04 19:42 BST (UK)  »
Be grateful if anyone can suggest how to find the marriage record of my GGGF, James Horstead to what looks like Mary Ann on the 1851 census for Stepney, St George in the East.

The wife's birthplace is given as Middlesex, St Georges.  The oldest child is 13 so I suppose we are talking 1838 at a push!

Cant find their marriage anywhere.  Found an Ann Horstead death record 1868 with the right age for the wife and in the same area.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sussex / Cheal Family Sussex
« on: Tuesday 04 May 04 19:02 BST (UK)  »
Wondered if anyone else researching the Cheal/cheale family in Sussex, Brighton, Alfriston, Litlington.  My Great Grandfather was George Robert Cheal.

I have been fortunate in finding a fair bit of info on that line if anyone else is looking.

Anyone info on the Verralls of Sussex?

Be grateful if anyone could look up Great Grandfather Edward John Horstead in St George of the East or Wapping.  I can find him from his marriage date in 1868 to Emily Steers but no trace before then.

It is family legend he came from Norfolk but then the census birth palces are both London!!!  Can anyone find him or his brother (Jonas) before 1868 please.

Many thanks

Be very grateful if someone could help me before I go totally mad!  I am searching for my Great Grandfather, Edward John Horstead born about 1840 - in 1871,1881, 1891, 1901 censuses in London with either St George of the East or Wapping as his birthplace.  He married in 1868.

The query is that the family legend has it that the Horsteads came from Norfolk originally.  I can find an Edward John Horstead born 1840 in Norfolk but no Edward Johns from that date until my Great Grandfathers marriage in 1868 in London to Emily Steers.

Also I have been told (though I am learning how memories can be dodgey) that he had a brother called Jonas Horstead.  I cant find a Jonas anywhere except in a marriage in London in 1870.

I would be very grateful if someone could find my Great Grandfather in the 1861 census when I guess he would be 21 or in the 1851 when he would be 11.

Many thanks!

Norfolk / Horstead
« on: Saturday 01 May 04 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to trace Great great grandfather born 1840 Edward John Horstead.

I can find his marriage in London in 1868 and on census for 1881 - 1901 he is shown as a stoker in the Navy.  However though the census show London as his birthplace it is family tradition that he came from Norfolk and had a brother or close relative called Jonas.  It is also said he worked in the brewing industry.

Now I have been unable to find a Edward Horstead in birth records for London but I have found two in Norfolk transcripts.  One born 1843 in Aylsham, who died in 1864 and the other born 1840 in Ketteringham between Wymondham and Norwich.  I also know there was a very large brewery in Wymondham at that time.

Any ideas how I can trace him from here?
