Staffordshire / unusual death ?
« on: Saturday 22 May 21 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Looking for some help with local sources to Stafford. My normal research grounds are Ireland / West Wales / West country, so this is an odd one.
This lady, Irene Violet King (nee Kiviatkowski) is a great Aunt, married in Dundalk Ireland, and had an address in Dublin at the time of her death.
According to the probate records(15 Mar 1960), she died
"12 October 1958 in a street in Stafford"
So she wasn't living there, maybe visiting, but it's an odd description, so I wondered if it made the courts or the local newspapers. Can't find anything on "British Newspapers online", so does any one know of local archive sources that could help ?
 Thanks in advance,
Geoff

Gloucestershire / Cheltenham Racecourse records
« on: Monday 26 October 20 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have the marriage certificate of one of my ancestors, Roland George Walters. It states his address in June 1949 as "The Race Course Prestbury". he was 27 years old in 1949.

His father, Reginald Charles Walters, is recorded as being a "Race Course Groundsman" and I assume they would be living together.

Would this make sense ? Was there accommodation for groundsmen / workers at that time at Prestbury ?

Does anyone have, or know of, any records from this period ? ( National Archives ? )

out of interest, in 1939 they were living in Cardiff, Glamorgan, and his father's occupation is listed as "Racecourse : Caretaker & Groundsman (Foreman)"

Thanks in advance,

Geoff

World War Two / Home Guard Association ?
« on: Friday 18 September 20 16:48 BST (UK)  »
I have been sent a spoon by my cousin. He found it in his mum's "stuff". Our dads were brothers, but my dad died in 1987.

It's tea spoon size, with a picture of a motorbike on the front.

On the back it is  engraved H G Trials 1955 Mr G Williams ( my dad was Gordon Williams )

Another family member seems to think there was a Home Guard Motorbike club ( Cheltenham area ), this would explain the HG. Does anyone know anything about this club / association ?

Somerset / tracing someone's adress in 1941 Somerset
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to confirm a connection. My mum was born in Taunton in 1941, but her family were in London in 1939. The name of the person she now believes was actually her father corresponds to someone living in Bath in 1939. (1939 register). Although both Bath and Taunton are in Somerset, there's a bit of distance between them. Assuming her mum and this man must have been in the same place at some point, I'd like to find addresses closer than Bath-Taunton. Does any one know of a way to trace addresses in 1940/1941 ? Electoral registers were stopped I believe, so anything else ?

Family History Beginners Board / tracing insurance documents
« on: Wednesday 20 December 17 22:38 GMT (UK)  »
My mother has concluded her father is not the man on her birth certificate. The reason for this is due to, primarily, her finding an insurance document when she was about 15, that was in her name but being paid by another man. This was around 1956, she was born in 1941. Does any one know if I can find  / search old insurance documents. I don't know the insurance company or any other details than my mum's name and the name of her possible father.

Pembrokeshire / John Williams b abt 1839 in Monkton, Pembrokeshire
« on: Wednesday 01 November 17 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have 4 possible matches coming up on GRO, but they are all listed as PEMBROKE UNION.

WILLIAMS, JOHN         JOHN  GRO Reference: 1839  M Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION  Volume 26  Page 33
WILLIAMS, JOHN         LEWIS GRO Reference: 1839  M Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION  Volume 26  Page 642  Order
WILLIAMS, JOHN      -           GRO Reference: 1839  S Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION  Volume 26  Page 618  Order
WILLIAMS, JOHN  PICTON     GRO Reference: 1839  J Quarter in PEMBROKE UNION  Volume 26  Page 643

Has anyone researched John and might have evidence of which one was born in Monkton ? Alternatively if anyone can rule out one of the possibles, means I will have to order fewer PDF's

thanks in advance, Geoff

I have found a grand child on census return, but don't yet know their parentage. I'd like to link to the grand parent, but doesn't seem obvious how to do this. I have seen that some people create a "dummy" child and link through them to the grand child. but there must be an easier way ?

thanks in advance if anyone's solved this

Geoff
