Sussex / Seaford East Sussex - any help please?
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently found my grandfather's brother Reginald Clifford GODFREY died in  a place called Seaford East Sussex. I have just found a burial inscription at St Leonard's Church in Seaford online. I wondered if anyone goes to this church at all, whether they would be willing to take a photo for me of the memorial stone? I have no idea when or why he left Cardiff to move there. If anyone was able to look at obituaries for around the time of his death I would be very grateful, just in case there was one, as it may lead me to more information about him. He died I think on 26 August 1972, and the certificate says at Brighton Royal Sussex Hospital. He was born 2 June 1896. Thanking you for any help.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / British Library St Pancras
« on: Tuesday 12 July 11 11:18 BST (UK)  »
I am unable to find my g g grandfather. He was drowned in late 1850 early 1851 from what has been passed down the family. No one has been able to find a grave/ or anything on him. he was a Channel Pilot and apparently drowned in Bristol Channel. Have been trying to find a newspaper for that time incase anything was written. The only one I have tracked online is one in British Library called Cardiff and Merthyr Advertiser for 1850 -1851.

MASSIVE ASK  -- If anyone is in the Library anytime and ever feels like a look through the newspaper could they please see if anything written on John Williams aged about 25/26 from Cardiff -- Channel Pilot drowned. There was a date of 8th January 1851 - but no one knows where we got that so it might be incorrect( and found nothing on him then)  the year was definitely 1850 late or early 1851 as 1851 census shows his wife as a widow.

I realise this a huge 'ask' but just wondered incase anyone ever goes there and has some spare time hugely grateful if anyone able to help.

Thanks as don't know where else to look for him. having tried all deaths/graves etc. and no sign of him anywhere. :)

Gloucestershire / Drowning off coast 1850s
« on: Friday 29 January 10 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone help me please. I have a relative who was drowned somewhere in the Bristol Channel. We believe it could have been around 1850/1851 possibly but not definite on years. The story was that he had bought a steam boat and sailed it from Cardiff - the boat blew up and he drowned.
I have searched amongst all papers and sea lists that I could and nothing showing. Have tried the Cardiff and Barry areas and nothing. We did wonder having googled around whether he would have drowned and ended up on Bristol side - I had seen that a lot of drowning victims ended up at a churchyard in Bristol somewhere. I can't find out which Church or whether there maybe any more information available. We have tried contacting Bristol record office but no luck there either.
Anyone able to help would be really grateful for any advice!!!! :)

Europe / ITALY name of place help please
« on: Sunday 12 April 09 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone can help. I have a relative search of the family name MELANDRI. I have census in Britain showing Vincenzo Melandri coming from a place called either Noyorum Glote or Aoyorum Glate/Glote/Grote - it is not clear to read the precise spelling . I have been told by other family members that they believe it may be near or part of Faenza in Italy. I have looked through old maps and new online as much as possible, and am unable to find anything of that names or anything at all similar. Vincenzo who it says was a hotel keeper in Italy and his son Guiseppe were in London showing in census for 1861. Vincenzo I believe was born about 1815 and his son Guiseppe was born about 1846. There is no mention of Vincenzo's wife ( so maybe she had died before coming to Britain ?) . I have lots of info on the family once established in Britain. Then Vincenzo disappears again on census in Britain after 1883 ( when his second wife has died). So he may have returned to Italy - as there is no sign of his death here. If anyone can give me any help to at least finding the proper name maybe of where Vincenzo and Guiseppe may have come from that would at least give me a chance to try and find his first wife and mother of Guiseppe !!! All help most gratefully received. Thanks for reading all this !!!!
