Kent / The Knowle - possibly in Sevenoaks, Kent?
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

During WW2 my Mum served in the Womens Land Army in Kent, and I believe was billeted at a Hostel - a large house called The Knowle. Photographs suggest it could be Victorian or Edwardian era. Does anyone have any information that would help me identify this place? A lot of her working time in the WLA was cultivating the land at the Brands Hatch circuit, which was all turned over to food production during the war years, so it would have been somewhere in that area of the county.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Dunbartonshire / Robert Service, born Cardross 1776
« on: Friday 23 January 15 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've recently traced back my family to Robert Thompson Service (born Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk) in abt 1880.

It looks likely that his father was David Service, born in Cardross in 1776, and later known as the 'shoemaker poet of Yarmouth'. David moved to Yarmouth as a young man, and wrote poetry (and frequented the Norfolk pubs in equal measure!) until his death in 1828. David was married to Mary Ward (born 1776 in Norfolk).

I wonder if anyone could offer any information on the Service family in Cardross and point me towards David's parents? There are a few possibles, and also other Service family members in Row, which I believe is a nearby parish.

As an aside, one of David's grandsons was christened Robert McFarlane Service, - a possible indicator of a mother/grandmother's maiden name? - but this may be a complete red herring!

Any info or suggestions would be gratefully received - many thanks - Sally.

Hello All,

I've traced back my family to Robert Thompson Service, born in Gt Yarmouth in abt 1800-1801. He married Mary Rayner Chapman in March 1823, and lived in Yarmouth until his death in 1878. I'd be very grateful for any information on Robert's birth or baptism - many thanks,

Sally

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Searching for info on Nancy I. HILL (born 1916)
« on: Thursday 20 November 14 11:00 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All,

Thanks to earlier assistance and advice from this site, I have recently managed to trace 2 previously unknown great-uncles (- one of whom had a grandchild with whom I'm now in contact) . The second great uncle was William Hill ( born in Jacksdale, 1888-1954) married to Bertha Lydia Hill nee Brentnall (1886-1956). I traced him via a combination of the details on my great-grandfather's will, and the information on a family death notice in the local newspaper.

William and Bertha had a daughter, Nancy I. Hill, born 1916 (birth registered at Mansfield), but I'm struggling to find any further details of her after that. She was still alive (aged 21) at the time of the newspaper report I've traced, dated 1937, but I'm not sure where the family were living. At the time of their deaths, more recently, William and Bertha lived at at Eastwood.

If Nancy married and has any surviving family I'd really like to know. Any assistance  via parish records or local knowledge would be very gratefully received - many thanks.

Derbyshire / New Bath Hotel, Matlock Bath - William Hill b 1888
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
While researching my grandmother's family - 9 children of Robert & Catherine Hill, living in Selston parish (Westwood and Jacksdale) Notts, I discovered that my grandmother had an older brother, William, who had never been mentioned during my childhood. Several of the children were baptised en bloc at St Michaels, Underwood, in 1891.

The census for 1891 and 1901 show William with the rest of the family in Jacksdale, but the only entry I can find for 1911 shows a William Hill as the Restaurant Manager at the New Bath Hotel, Matlock Bath.

I'm quite new to family history research - can anyone advise how I might pursue this enquiry further? Unfortunately William Hill is not an uncommon name, and there are so many possibilities, I'm finding it hard to know where to go next.

Any assistance would be appreciated - many thanks.

My great grandparents were Robert and Catherine Hill of Jacksdale. It is stated on the 1911 census that they had 9 children, with 1 child no longer living. By a process of elimination, I believe this child was William, born in 1888. I have definite information about all 8 of the other children from my own early memories.

William is listed on the 1891 and 1901 census returns, but I have been unable to find any definite information on him after that date. From a previous lookup request on here, I established that several of the children, including William, were baptised at Underwood in 1891. Could anyone please give me any additional information on his death or burial records?

Many thanks.

Since posting this, I've been back to look again at the 1911 census list and obviously suffered a mental aberration. The total number of children born was 10, rather than 9, and it is therefore possible that the child who died was not William, but an unnamed offspring. However, I am still looking to clarify this, so if anyone has any information of a child of Robert and Catherine who died in infancy, I would be most grateful.

I am also still searching for info on William. There is a William Hill (b in Jacksdale) listed in the 1911 census in Matlock, Derbyshire, but I have no way of establishing if this is the correct one.

Thanks in anticipation for anyone's assistance.

Hi - I recently discovered that my grandma had 2 brothers whom I never knew about. I believe one of them, my great-uncle Robert Hill (b Q2 1882 in Jacksdale, Notts) moved to Attercliffe as a young man. There is a marriage recorded between Robert Hill and Edith Heath in Q1 1910 in the West Riding area, and if possible I'd like to find out the name and occupation of Robert Hill's father in the marriage records.

Edith Heath was born at Kimberworth - not sure if that falls within the same W Riding area, or which parish church the marriage took place, but they lived in Attercliffe at the time of the 1911 census.

If I can confirm that Robert Hills' father was also called Robert Hill, a General Dealer/ Shopkeeper, then that would be conclusive. It would also mean that with the help of another forum, I now have another 2nd cousin I was unaware of!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Help with Selston Parish baptism records please
« on: Tuesday 30 September 14 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello - as a newby on this forum , this is my maiden post - please be gentle with me!

I've discovered via the 1891 census that my grandmother Ida Hill (born Jacksdale 1896) had two brothers that I was unaware of. One of them, Robert Hill (b abt 1882) appears to have moved to the Sheffield area, married and had a family there. In order to confirm this, (and as a starting point before purchasing his birth cert) I'd like to find out if his baptism in shown in the Selston parish records. The most likely BMD record shows a Basford registration for Q2 1882, so this would be the place to start the search. I no longer live in the Notts area so any help would be much appreciated - thanks.
