Australia / Children of British soldier not in BMD register
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 02:23 BST (UK)  »
Corporal George Hayman married Catherine Dalton at the Catholic Church, Perth on 11 May 1858. George was serving with the 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment of Foot and is believed to have participated in the storming of the Eureka Stockade in 1854.

Their marriage appears in the online WA BDM register and I have the certificate, but I cannot find the births of son George Augustus Hayman born c.1861 or daughter Elizabeth Bertha Hayman born c.1862 in WA before the regiment moved east and eventually to NZ for the Maori wars? I'm also on the search for another daughter Jane Belinda Hayman born c.1864/5 maybe SA, VIC or even NZ?

Any help much appreciated. Is it normal for the births of children to men serving in the British Army to not be in the state registers? Children born after his discharge in 1866 do appear in the NSW register.

Renfrewshire / ORR, John & Thomas - Brothers?
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 14:56 BST (UK)  »
The 1851 census shows John Orr aged 26 (baker employing 2 men), living with wife Janet and daughter Janet at 99 Causeyside Street, Paisley. John was convicted of robbery & assault in 1857 and sent to Western Australia, wife Janet and daughters Ann & Janet followed in 1864. As yet I have not been able to find the marriage of John & Janet, though there is a marriage between John Orr and Jean Paterson 14/10/1843 which may prove to be this couple (I do realise that Jessie and Janet are sometimes interchanged, but not usually Jean).

I did however find a John Orr and Thomas Orr (both bakers) aged 18 and 19 respectively, in the 1841 census living at 46 Moss Street, Paisley. I believe it is this Thomas that marries Mary Ann Ritchie in 1847 and appears (already a widower) with 2yr old son James in the home of his father-in-law James Ritchie in the 1851 census. He remarries soon after in 1851 to Jane Stevenson and they appear in subsequent censuses until 1891. Thomas dies in 1892 and his death register entry confirms the two marriages, trade as master baker and parents as James Orr and Agnes Madden, son James from the first marriage is the informant. I haven't been able to find a marriage of James and Agnes, nor the births of Thomas or John to a couple with these names.

Do you think 1841 John & Thomas and 1851 John & Thomas the same men? Are Thomas and John brothers?

This is one of those cases where a hypothesis all fits together nicely but to-date there is no "smoking gun" in the form of supporting evidence.

And just to throw in a bit more intrigue - in the 1851 census, John & Janet's elder daughter Ann age 6 is staying at 20 Great Hamilton Street, Paisley in the home of her uncle Alexander Borland and his wife Mary. There are stepchildren in the household with the surname Houston. I know this is definitely Ann because John & Janet's son James b.1854 appears in the Borland household in the 1861 census flagged as Alexander's nephew. How are the Orrs / Borlands related?

Armed Forces / How do I get the Service Record for 12th Regiment of Foot soldier
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 14:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone let me know how to get hold of the service record of Private, later Corporal George Hayman No.3309 1st Battalion, 12th Regiment of Foot? I believe he enlisted about 1853 in Westminster. Some debate among family about him, hopefully his service record might clarify some things?

Thanks Andrew

Kent / St. Andrew's United Reform(ed) Church, Woolwich
« on: Thursday 21 March 13 00:39 GMT (UK)  »
My great-great-grandfather James Lumber McCallum (lovely unique name for reasearch, but I've no idea why Lumber) appears in two different online baptismal registers with the same date 20 June 1823. His father James was in the Royal Artillery at Woolwich.

On 'The Genealogist' website the record is claimed to be from the Scots Church, Woolwich (it is 3 handwritten lines entered by the local Presbyterian minister John Blythe [PRO RG4/1994]) whereas 'Ancestry' claims it's record is from the register of St. Andrews United Reform Church, Woolwich (it is 4 handwritten lines also entered by the local Presbyterian minister John Blythe).

The surrounding entries also appear in both registers.

Is the more commonly used "Scots Church" simply a colloquial name for the latter? If so, why are there two registers?

Any explanation most welcome?

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / McCallum, James & Mary (missing) 1851 Census
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 01:02 GMT (UK)  »
Any help appreciated finding James McCallum b. 1785 and family in the 1851 Census. James and his wife Mary Newton b. 1789 had 11 (current count) children between 1813 and 1834 (John, Charles, Mary, Janet, Euphemia, James Lumber, Margaret, Robert, William, Edward Henry and Horatio Edwin).

After a 26 year career serving in the Royal Artillery, James was discharged in 1828 and was appointed Barracks Sergeant of the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. In 1841 the family was living at the Royal Artillery Barracks. James retired from the military in 1855 (aged 70) and in 1861 he and Mary were living at 44 Lower Wood Street, Woolwich.

The question is where were James & Mary in 1851? I cannot find them in the census.

All 7 sons also served in the Royal Artillery and the 3 daughters who lived to adulthood, married artillery men (Mary to Benjamin Bathurst, Janet to Robert Steven, and Euphemia to Charles Wharry).

Andrew

Other Countries / British India: Thomas Harvie
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I found this small obit notice on Trove about the death of Captain Thomas Harvie in May 1842 at Spencer's Hotel, Calcutta, India. Thomas Harvie had links to the Jerusalem Tea House in London and settled his family in Launceston, Tasmania.

I haven't been able to find anything more about his sea-faring career, death or pre-Australian life? Any suggestions?

Australia / WA Convict: Thomas Veal(e) alias John Hockines (Hawkins)
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 07:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find any evidence that Thomas Veal(e) and John Hockines (Hawkins) are the same man? The common link is wife Janet Orr.

John Orr was a Scottish baker and came to Australia in 1858 as a convict aboard the ‘Edwin Fox’. He was convicted of assault and robbery in the Glasgow Court of Justiciary in 1857 and sentenced to 14 years. The ‘Edwin Fox’ sailed from Plymouth on 26 Aug 1858 arriving in Fremantle on 20 Nov 1858. The ship is now the centrepiece of a museum in Picton, New Zealand. John Orr is described as a baker, aged 33, married with 3 children, 5’ 7”, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, round faced, stout build, slightly pockmarked. A John Orr aged 43 died in WA in 1869.

Janet Orr snr. followed her convict husband to Australia, also bringing daughters Annie and Janet aboard the ‘Fitzroy’ in 1864. The ‘Fitzroy’ sailed from London at 8am on 7 Dec 1864, arriving in Fremantle in March 1865. Son, James Orr’s name appears on the record of final departure, but is crossed out. It is not clear whether he died prior to departure, on the voyage or remained in England. In 1864 Janet snr. was aged 42, Annie 17, Janet 13 and James 10. A Janet Orr aged 69 died in WA in 1894. This could possibly be Janet Orr snr.

Janet Orr married John Hockines (sometimes written as Hawkins) on 7 Feb 1867 at the Registrar’s Office, Bowes & Murchison District, WA. Janet could not write, so made her “X” mark, whereas John Hockines wrote his name very clearly. The spelling is definitely HOCKINES. Hockines was working as a miner and listed his residence as Fortune Mine. Janet was a servant and listed her residence as Northampton.

A daughter Edith Jane Veale was born in 1868 at Irwin River to Thomas Veale and Janet Orr. A son James John Veale was born in 1870 at Geraldine Mine and died aged 1 month. The 2nd birth register index entry lists the mother as Janet Hawkins Orr and father as Thomas Veale.

Janet Orr's partner Thomas Veale was also a convict and came to Australia in 1862 aboard the ‘Norwood’. The ‘Norwood’ left Portland on 16 Mar 1862 and arrived in Fremantle on 9 June 1862. He was convicted of with violence in the Gloucester Assizes in 1860 and sentenced to 6 years. Probably quite a light sentence as he had quite a prior record. Thomas Veale is described as a labourer, aged 25, single, 5’ 81/4”, black hair, light hazel eyes, full faced, sallow complexion, stout build and ink marks left arm, U.W. heart and wreath right arm.

Janet Orr’s second marriage was to John Grice on 9 Sept 1873 in the Congregational Chapel, Fremantle. Her name is written “Janet Hawkins”, widow, occupation Domestic and residence Perth. John Grice was working as a Miner resident in the Champion Bay District. The witnesses are Isaac and Annie Bisp. Annie Bisp is Janet’s sister. She also marries twice, firstly in 1865 in Geraldton to Thomas Burnet Hayward. Secondly in 1872 in Fremantle to Isaac Bisp.

Janet Orr is a widow at the time of her second marriage, indicating that her first husband died prior to 1873. There is a death of a Thomas Veale aged 38 in the register for 1872. There is no death in the registers of a John Hockines, John Hawkins or Thomas Hockines. A Thomas Hawkins dying in 1869 is aged 67, too old.

John Grice & Janet moved to Victoria, South Australia and ultimately Sydney in NSW and had ten children of their own. John outlived his wife Janet and is the informant on her 1903 NSW death certificate which confirms Edith Jane and two deceased boys as being children from her first marriage to "Thomas Hawkins".

Surely Janet would not have married in 1867 (aged 16) and given birth to three children to another man within 3 years. Any thoughts on how I might confirm that Thomas Veale and John Hockines (or Hawkins) are one and the same man? And if so, why would he adopt the Hockines/Hawkins alias for Janet and himself but give his children the surname Veale?

« on: Friday 22 October 10 23:32 BST (UK)  »
A recent search for an 1872 birth in Victoria revealed a birthplace of "Woor". Can anyone tell me what this is short for? Parents marriage was 1872 in Geelong and all subsequent births in Beechworth 1874-1887.
