Canada / COMPLETED - Tracing a living person in Canada?
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 23:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I would like some tips on how to trace someone in Canada.

She was born in England in 1958 to a Scottish father & English mother. In 1964 they emigrated to Canada. She has a relatively unusual Scottish Christian name. Her father was a vet with a Mac__ surname. I don't know if she has married. They lived for many years in Ottawa, but were last heard of in the early 1990s living in Victoria on Vancouver Island.

Hi,

Could anyone please give me some tips on how I could trace two brothers who emigrated from Scotland to New York, possibly in the 1890s.

They were born around 1870 and at least one brother was still in Scotland on the 1891 census. I'm told they may have been in their twenties when they emigrated, putting it in the 1890s. They both married, probably after emigrating. What would be the best websites to look for their records such as passenger lists or immigration or census records.

I've looked on the Ellis Island and Castle Garden sites but can't find these brothers. I've also tried ancestorsonboard.com, but with lots of possible matches (and no dates or port of departure) it could be an expensive search.

I've searched the Social Security Death Index on familyrelatives.org and found what looks like the death of one of them in Utica at the age of 97. Is it worth applying for a copy of his SS-5? The details on ssa.gov don't mention postage to the UK.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Caithness / Where is Barnskirk?
« on: Tuesday 17 January 06 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone suggest what or where Barnskirk could be?

I have a document from Caithness in the 1860s which gives someone's name followed by 'Farm Servant, Barnskirk'. I assume Barnskirk is a place name in (or near) Caithness. I've searched the internet for spelling variations but all I can find are some references to 'Barnkirk' in Dumfries and Galloway which would surely be too far for a farm worker to travel. Does anyone have a better suggestion?

Lanarkshire / Which parish was Tollcross in?
« on: Friday 11 November 05 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to search the 1901 census for a family living on a farm near Tollcross but I don't know which parish to look for. I've found references to it being in Barony but this isn't an option on Scotland's People. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
