United States of America / How to Prove a Lack of Military Service
« on: Wednesday 10 June 15 07:06 BST (UK)  »
I have a somewhat odd question. A cousin of mine is applying for a  foreign citizenship based on his grandfather's nationality (now deceased). However, he needs to prove that once his grandfather left his home country and naturalized in the USA, he didn't serve in the American military. Is there any way of going about getting evidence that someone didn't serve? I found his WWI and WWII draft registrations in which he registered but never went to war. Are there any papers that can be filed to check if someone served?

Thanks!

US Lookup Requests / Help proving Sol and Mendel Rosenthal were brothers
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 20:50 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to apply for a birth certificate of a relative in another country (genealogy purposes) but need to prove by relation by blood in order to be able to request it. Thus, I need to prove that Sol Roy Rosenthal and Mendel/Manny Rosenthal were brothers.

Mendel/Manny was born 20 December, 1891.
Sol Roy was born 6 September 1903.

Their father was Herszko Rozenthal. This got changed upon immigration to Harry Rosenthal. Their mother was Sora Ester Kon which got changed to Sarah Cohen/Kahn. Harry was born 1856-1859 in Poland.

A census of Manny living with his many siblings and parents (1910) : https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MKZQ-NL9

Manny 1920: http://sharing.ancestry.com/6320340?h=a125c4&utm_campaign=bandido-webparts&utm_source=post-share-modal&utm_medium=copy-url

I can't seem to find Sol's name on the 1910 census which is odd because he was born in 1903. However, there is a "Charles" and I wonder if his name was changed. I am hoping that someone is able to help me find Harry's 1920 census (I am hoping that Sol is living with them and it will say "son"). Many thanks!

I have three handwritten Polish birth certificates from the mid to late 19th century, and one marriage certificate. I would love to know what they say, but I don't know a word of Polish. My first thought was to type them into google translate, but I am unable to read the handwriting.

I apologize that I couldn't upload them directly, it wouldn't take them. There are multiple images of each document as I had to use a camera to take a picture of the microfilm, and thus the images are slightly difficult to read. If anyone can assist me with this or knows where I might be able to go looking, it would be greatly appreciated!

Other Countries / Tykocin Poland Jewish Genealogy Help?
« on: Wednesday 07 January 15 02:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking for several months for any records I can possibly find about my family from Tykocin, Poland. So far, I have failed to find anything. I have been searching on JRI Poland.
Their information is as follows:

Hersch/Harry Rozenthal (born 1856-1859. There is the image below, but all of his American papers say that "Joseph" was his father. Perhaps he had multiple names?)

image removed link not working

Harry married Sarah Esher Kohn/Kahn also of Poland, although I don't know where.

They had multiple children:
Mendel (Dec. 20, 1891)
Sol Roy (Sept. 6, 1903)
Bella (1901)
Samuel (1896-1897)
Morris (1892)

Any help is appreciated!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help reading number on census
« on: Wednesday 07 January 15 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am reading a U.S. 1910 census, but am unable to see if it says these people were married for 21 years, or 28 years. What do you think?
Thanks!

US Lookup Requests / Harry Levine of Maine
« on: Sunday 04 January 15 01:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on Harry Levine of Maine. I am trying to find where he came from but can't find his siblings names or his draft registrations. According to his 1920 and 1930 census, he was born somewhere between 1885-1890. His parents were Morris Levine and Etta Schlosberg. He married Lena Levine and had children, Anne, Minnie, Bessie, Charles in Boston. He married Lena in 1909 in Boston. I know he grew up in Maine but was born elsewhere.

US Lookup Requests / Looking for census of Harry Rosenthal of Illinois
« on: Wednesday 31 December 14 01:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for 1910 (and onwards) census records for Harry (Herszko/Hirsch/Hersch these are names he has gone by :/ ) Rosenthal. Harry was born between 1856-1861 in Tykocin, Poland. I don't know his wife's name, but he had children Manny (Mendel) and Sol Rosenthal. His original last name was Rozenthal. He immigrated in 1906, and since then resided with his family (until his children moved out) at 1536 Turner Avenue, Chicago, IL, USA. Manny seems to have moved out by 1920, as I have his census. I don't know when Sol moved out. My goal is to find Harry's wife's name, and the names of other children (if any). He came to the USA in May of 1906 via Bremen, Germany to Baltimore. I don't believe that they came to the USA, but his parents names were Izrael (father) and Dwora (mother). Dwora's father's name was Mendlow. I also have reason to believe (from death records) that Harry's wife's maiden name was Kahn/Cohen. Family tales say her first name was some form of "Sara". Many thanks!

US Lookup Requests / Looking for Town of Lena Kovitz, Born in Russia
« on: Wednesday 17 December 14 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking to find where in the Russian Empire my grandmother was born, although I am unable to locate it. She lived in Massachusetts, and on her 1920 census claims to have been naturalized.
Her details are as follows:

Name: Lena Kovitz/Covitz
Birth: 1890-1892 (according to census from 1920, 1930)
Father: Michael Kovitz
Mother: Zelda Kovitz
Sibbilings: Samuel, Harry

Once census says she immigrated in 1902, the other says 1908.
She married a man named Harry Levine, I am not sure of the date.
There is a death record for a Lena Covitz in 1975, this is not her. She did in the late 50's or mid 60's.

Link to the census - The first two results are her (you need an ancestry subscription):

Many Thanks!
