Hi!
I'm having difficulty trying to find the name of a photographic studio based in Goole around 1900.

I have some pictures of my ancestors and in print is the photographers name printed above the word Goole.

I can see his first two initials are 'J G' and his surname is hard to read (louses or prubes???)

Anyone have similiR pictures or know the photographers name?

Many thanks

Australia / Looking for relatives of ELSA GERTRUDE KUHN
« on: Saturday 11 June 16 10:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi my name is Vince and I live in Surrey, England.
My great grandfather married a Elsa Gertrude Kuhn on 18th September 1914.
They lived at 64 James road, Waverley NSW.
George deserted his wife around 22nd of September 1915 after joining the 10th reinf, 18 battalion.
He died on the 19th May 1918 at Amiens.

Could anyone help me learn more about Elsa and George or better still, find living relatives. Any information will be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Illiteracy in the 19th century?
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone help me with a conundrum.

My great grandfather born in (1882) in Goole, Yorkshire had a very reined signature on his marriage certificate, yet my earlier ancestors signed their marriage certificates with a 'X' (the mark of).

This begs the question; when did schooling begin for the poor of Yorkshire?
My ancestors all lived within close proximity of schools so I would have thought they would of at least been able to write their own names?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / The Learoyd's of Goole.
« on: Friday 24 October 14 17:49 BST (UK)  »
My 2x great grandfather 'Thomas woodhead Learoyd appears as living in Goole from 1891 until his death in 1926. He lived at 47 Burlington Cresent most of his life there.

Subsequently my great grandfather 'George Henry Learoyd' and grandfather George Thomas Learoyd also lived in Goole.

What begs the question is;
What schools would they have attended living around Burlington Crescent?
Are there any old photographs of the schools?

I live in London so can't seem to know where to start.
Thanks :)

Australia / Australian Learoyd's
« on: Friday 24 October 14 06:04 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather 'George Henry Learoyd' arrived in Sydney from Yorkshire on the ship 'Moonta' on 13th September 1914.

Five days later on the 18th of September he marries a 'Elsa Gertrude (maiden name unknown?)
He probably met her on his travels previously being a merchant seaman.

They live together in James road, Waverley, NSW.

On 24th September 1915 he joins the 18th battalion of the Australian army  and dies in battle 19th may 1918.

The above information is all I have on him which begs the question;
Did he have any children in Australia?
What happened to Elsa Gertrude Learoyd?

Any help or leads would be most appreciated as I live in London England and haven't a clue where to begin.
Thanks :)

Family History Beginners Board / The Learoyds
« on: Thursday 23 October 14 18:30 BST (UK)  »
I have traced my Learoyd family back to 1849 using the general register but I've hit a wall?

I obtained the marriage certificate of my 3x great grandfather 'Jeremiah Clayton Learoyd' married to Emma Woodhouse on 10/06/1849 at Calverley moor in Yorkshire. And it says his fathers name was Joseph Learoyd - occupation 'Cordwainer'.

I later found out that my 4x great grandfather Joseph Learoyd of Otley married a Nanny Clapham in Bradford on 22/10/1820.

That's it! Can't find a clue to who his father was?
Can anyone give me an idea where to search. Ancestry just isn't bringing up anything?
Thank you :)
