Offaly (Kings) / Rreid /Shanahan near Eglish
« on: Sunday 02 August 15 18:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi.   This is my first posting on the Offaly board.

We've been looking for an elusive Reid/Shanahan family somewhere in Ireland and have found one potential in the Eglish area of Offaly.

Our only starting clues were:
*Parents:  James Reid and Mary Shanahan
*Daughters:   Anne (b.abt 1835+/-) and Mamie
Nothing further was known.  Info came from Anne's death certificate in Yonkers, NY and misc. family history.    Irish Townland and County sources were not known and have not been found thus far in US records.

Another Irish researcher, who knew I was looking for this family group, found this possible family in Eglish in Offaly:

Parents:  James Reid   and     Mary M Shanahan
The following children were baptized between 1831-1846:  John, James, Patrick, Mary and Bridget and we have those records.    While Mary could possible be the "Mamie", there isn't an Anne in the list.

Anyone else working on a Reid/Shanahan connection?

Thanks.

Derry (Londonderry) / REID's in Cumber Lower, Co Derry
« on: Tuesday 28 July 15 22:44 BST (UK)  »
This is my first foray into Northern Ireland.   Anyone recognize the Reid's in this neighborhood?   Any thoughts on how to proceed further?

Anne Reid, b.abt. 1832, Ireland, location unknown.

Known facts:
*Parents – James Reid and Mary Shanahan.
*Sister – Mamie
*Lived adult life, and died, in Yonkers, NY
*Husband – Hugh Walsh

A hired researcher has discovered the following vital records, in County Derry.  Unfortunately, the records don’t include a mother’s name, so still unable to confirm.   But this is the closest the researcher has come in almost a year now – Anne with a father, James, and a possible sister, Mamie.

1) Address:  Cross, Cumber Lower, Co Derry, Presbyterian
Anne Reid, Father: James Reid
Date of Bapt: 23 Aug 1835

2) Address:  unknown, St Columb’s, Co Derry, Church of Ireland
Mary Anne (Mamie) Reid, Father: James Reid
Date of Bapt:  11 Jan 1829

Thanks.

Tipperary / Fogarty / Neely in Co Tipperary 1850+
« on: Friday 26 June 15 18:57 BST (UK)  »
I have a FOGARTY family in Tipperary I'd like to find out more about.  The wife/mother is a sister to our Neely ancestor.

Margaret NEELY was the daughter of Richard NEELY and Johanna DONOVAN.
Born: 17 Sep 1843 Holycross-Ballycahill RC records, Godparents:   Thomas Donovan and Eliza Cormack

Margaret married Michael FOGARTY, about 1870 [no record found], and they had the following children per FamilySearch:
Richard b.3 Feb 1872 in HolyCross
Mary Anne b.26 June 1874 in HolyCross
Bridget b. 13 Jan 1878 in Farney Bridge
Patrick b.21 Mar 1880 in Farney Bridge

In 1887, Michael Fogarty of Farney Bridge, signs the death record for his mother-in-law, Johanna Donovan Neely.  Was Margaret deceased or were men expected to sign the death records?

I'd like to find out more about this family.  Who were Michael's parents?  Did the family remain in Ireland or did they immigrate?   Many of Margaret's siblings immigrated to the NYC area between 1865-1885.

I've searched at Ancestry.com, but haven't really found anything that matches up.

Thanks.

Tipperary / Crowe / Neely in Tipperary or Limerick
« on: Thursday 25 June 15 21:11 BST (UK)  »
According to the FamilySearch site, the following family lived in the Limerick/Tipperary area.

Parents:  James Neely (b.1827-1847, depending on record) and Margaret Crowe (b.abt 1847).

Their children were all born in Ireland, 1865+/- to 1875 +/-.
Children:  Mary, John, Johanna, James, Michael and Patrick.

John and James were born/christened in Emly while Johanna was in Grean.  The others were either generic Ireland or generic Tipperary.

First question:  would the marriage record, if one exists for James and Margaret, include the names of their parents?  I already have a James Neely, b.1845 in the HolyCross area of Tipperary. His parents were Richard Neely and Johanna Donovan.  I have the birth records for that entire famiiy. I'd love to be able to connect these two families together.    FamilySearch does not appear to have a marriage record for James and Margaret.

Their US records indicate an immigration date of 1883-1890 and in 1892, the entire family is in Watervliet, NY which is across the river from Troy, NY.   Troy history indicates a known link to EMLY.

Second Question:  I'd like to know more about any Nealy or Crowe families that lived in the Grean/Emly general area.   Particularly, if there was known immigration to New York in the late 1800s.  FamilySearch indicated a possible five family groups for a Margaret Crowe, b.abt 1847.

Thanks.

Ireland / Coughlin/Coughlan mid-1800s IRE to Yonkers, NY
« on: Tuesday 28 April 15 22:50 BST (UK)  »
I have two Coughlin/Coughlan brothers who immigrated to Yonkers, New York, where they lived and died, two houses apart.      Immigration prior to the mid-1860s.      Would like to discover Irish county of birth.  Have not found any US VR which indicate County of Birth.

Brothers:
John, b.abt 1834, Ireland, county/town unknown
Daniel, b.abt 1839, Ireland, county/town unknown

Their Parents:  Daniel Coughlin and Julia (___).
Born in Ireland, county/town unknown.
Probably married prior to 1835, in Ireland, location unknown.

John died in Yonkers in 1904.   He married Mary (___) [born in Ireland] and their children (all born in Yonkers 1860-1877) were:  Julia, Daniel (A), Bridget, Ellen, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Michael and Daniel (B).

Daniel died in Yonkers in 1906.  He married (1) Nora O'Brien [born in Ireland] who died prior to 1880.  Their children (born in NY 1867-1880) were: Julia, Ellen and Joseph.  He married (2) Bridget Haley, who outlived him.

Not sure if they were related, but there were several other Coughlin families in the same neighborhood.    Two with the given name of Cornelius and one called Martin.

Thanks for any help or direction you can provide.

Sligo / Gorivan/Goravin of Co Sligo
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 00:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on two brothers who were born in County Sligo but immigrated to Yonkers NY prior to 1850.

The surname is spelt many different ways.  Basically, take Gorivan and substitute (*) for each vowel.  G*R*V*N.  Most name variations start with "Go".

Patrick Gorivan, b.abt 1830, Co Sligo
John Gorivan, b.abt 1835, Co Sligo
Parents:  John Gorivan and Bridget Austin, birth dates and locations unknown.

Occupations:
Patrick:  livery stable owner
John: brick mason

Patrick married an Elizabeth, location and surname unknown.
John married a Margaret McGarrell in NY, who was born in Ireland, but location unknown.

I look forward to any comments you might have.

Thanks.

Ireland / BMD - Pre-1850 General Question
« on: Saturday 01 November 14 20:49 GMT (UK)  »
My husband's Irish immigrant ancestors (15) all immigrated to the NYC area from 1850-1870.  Which means they were born in Ireland sometime between 1830-1850.  And their parents would have been born 1800-1830.  All dates approximate.

For each immigrant, we have their parents names, from the death records.  But no townland or county on 13 of them.  Which makes the Irish searching tough.

I have all their info in NY. Only two death certificates and/or obituaries, included the county of birth.  And I have not found any immigration work that indicated county of birth.

Any suggested research methods I should follow or take to try and find these Irish ancestors in Ireland who were all born 1800-1850?   Other than just listing each family group in the Ireland-General forum?

Thanks.

Tipperary / Tipperary: Thurles/Holycross - NEELY/DONOVAN
« on: Saturday 01 November 14 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in finding more information about the ancestry of the following family group.  The parents were married and raised a family in the Holycross area, but I have no idea where the parents were born.  Possibly Tipperary, possibly elsewhere in Ireland.  The info I do have came from one of the historical groups in Tipperary.

I'd also like to determine the burial location of the parents.  Tried contacting the church, by email, but received no response.

Richard Neely, b.abt 1810, location unk.  Was a carpenter.  Died 1870, Cormackstown.
Johanna Donovan, b.abt 1817, location unk.  Died 1887 Cormackstown.
Married in Tipperary, at Holycross, 08 Nov 1837

The following children were baptized at Holycross between 1839 and 1859:
John, Margaret, James, Thomas, William, Richard, Elizabeth, Patrick and Michael.

The following children migrated to the New York area: John, Thomas, William, Richard, Elizabeth and Patrick.  Not sure what happened to the other children.    I have all the information on the ones who migrated.

Son, James, was the informant on his father's death.  The informants on the mother's death were:  Michael Fogarty and Farney Bridge, unknown individuals.

Any thoughts or comments on how to proceed?

Thanks.
