Durham / Burial Record
« on: Monday 23 October 17 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello could anyone offer any advice on the following please:

-am trying to help a lady in Canda find out where her aunt is buried.

The person in question is an ETHEL M. DEAN died aged 17 in 1937 - entry of death indicates records are for 'Auckland' (UK).

Ethel was a ward of St Mary's Home for girls in Tudhoe, County Durham and died of rheumtic fever in a hospital (presumably/possibly nearby). She may of course have left the home at the age of 17 (but some girls did continue in it's employ once they were of leaving age).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance. Carol Masip

Family History Beginners Board / Meaning of NC in a census
« on: Thursday 11 February 16 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, could anyone please advise if they know what NC stands for in a census return?

This is in a 1911 census for a William EKE living in Chopwell, Winlaton, County Durham.

The column for place of birth records N C Northumberland (don't believe this stands for Newcastle as this is written in full elsewhere).

Many thanks for any ideas - Carol

Hello,
Any suggestions please on how to find a record of WILLIAM EKE's voyage to Australia - thought to be as a merchant seaman - between 1892 and 1901 (although in 1892 he would only have been 12 he may have lied about his age and claimed to have been 15).
There is no record of him in the UK 1901 census and by around 1904 he was back in the UK working as a coal miner in the North East, employed at Victoria Garesfield colliery.

- 1880 William Eke born Corpusty, Norfolk
- 1892 - 1901 whereabouts unknown - sailed to Australia???
- 1905 - 1908 - Victoria Garesfield, North East UK
 - 1909 - 1912 - whereabouts unknown
- 1912 - 1914 - Dover area (Snowdown & Chislet collieries)
- 1914 - 1921 - whereabouts unknown
- 1921 - back in North East - Morpeth area (married at Stannington)

Any advice, pointers greatly appreciated.

England / British in India 1932
« on: Wednesday 18 November 15 08:58 GMT (UK)  »
Can any knowledgeable person help explain the following. My grandfather - JOHN THOMPSO b. 20/03/1914 Harrowdine Terrace, Rowlands Gill, Co. Durham - parents Isabella Hood and John Thompson was a coal miner all his life - living at Victoria Garesfield after Rowlands Gill and working at the pit there.  I have however been given photos of him which say India 1932. First of all what were the British doing in India in 1932 (keeping order) - also as he was a miner had there been conscription (which I don't think there was) he wouldn't have been included. So he must have enlisted voluntarily. Can anyone say anything from the uniform he was wearing (photo attached) - also there is a flag which seems to read  R. A. P. ? E. YORK R. - Any ideas greatly welcomed and thank you in advance. (have other photos if required)

Durham / Missing children - Frail 1940 - 1944 St Bede's Jarrow
« on: Friday 21 August 15 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone suggest anything for the following:

Thomas FRAIL and Helen Hughes, living in Jarrow, had children every one or two years between 1932 and 1944 when Helen died in childbirth.
Have, however, only found records of the following:
- Thomas b. Dec. 1930's, Catherine & Bernard b. 1930's, Peter Hughes b. Mar. 1930's, Irene b. March 1930's and Vincent b. 1930s. all children born 1930's, post edited as they are living people
Can anyone suggest why I can not find records of any children between 1940 and 1944 (have tried variants of surname)? Also, if Helen died in childbirth and the child too, would there be a record of the child (she died January 24th 1944)? Many thanks for any suggestions.

Thomas Frail is believed to have been from Jarrow in Co; Durham, England.

Family History Beginners Board / Death of Sarah and William Walton Durham prior to 1911
« on: Wednesday 28 January 15 09:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Could anyone with time and access to the appropriate resources possibly assist with the following?

My great grandfather (b. Byker) married for a second time May 6th 1911 St Mary's Church Newcastle (to an Annie Cooney - maiden name Wilkinson).

Prior to that I believe he had first married a Sarah Richardson July 11th 1896 at St Margaret’s  Church, Durham.

The 1901 census records the family at 2 Cherry Place, St Oswald in Durham: William Walton 26, Sarah Walton 23 (born 1877/1878) and son William aged 1 (plus mother-in-law Mary Richardson aged 49).

Obviously as divorce was costly and rare in those days, I presume his first wife (and possibly his child) must have died in orderr for him to remarry.
I am looking for death records to confirm this - any help greatly appreciated.

Carol
