Completed Census Requests / Wells alias Luckhurst in parish records
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Having spent a few profitable hours in the record office in Maidstone, I have a puzzle from the records

I have found the following records for Ulcombe in Kent

Baptisms

28/3/1812 Mary Ann to Thomas & Sarah Wells
12/11/1813 William to Thomas & Sarah Wells
21/1/1816 Thomas to Thomas & Sarah Wells
14/6/1818 James to Thomas & Sarah Wells
17/10/1822 Sarah to Thomas & Sarah Wells
6/4/1828 Mary Anne to Thomas & Sarah Wells alias Luckhurst
13/12/1830 Lewis to Thomas & Sarah Wells alias Luckhurst
3/11/1833 George to Thomas & Sarah Wells commonly called Luckhurst

Burials

8/5/1812 Mary Ann daughter of Thomas & Sarah Wells - infant
8/10/1837 George Wells alias Luckhurst aged 4 years

Should I be assuming that Luckhurst was Sarah's maiden name (I cannot find a marriage record) and the parish clerk was being pedantic, or am I missing something somewhere? The families are down as Wells in the censuses.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Chris

The Common Room / Marriage with consent of parents
« on: Friday 11 March 05 08:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a marriage in 1832 between William Skingle & Mary Stock

They were married "with consent of parents"

This implies that one of them was under 21

I know William was baptised in 1808, so was 24, but I do not know for sure about Mary. Does it mean that she was below 21 even though the later censuses would place her date of birth between 1803-1808?

Or is this just one of those misleading things. It would be helpful to know as I'm trying to find Mary's baptism and parents

The Common Room / Place of residence at time of marriage
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 09:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a little puzzle.

I was under the impression that to be married in a certain parish the couple had to at least nominally live there - and that probably at least one of them actually did.

I have a marriage in 1840 at the Parish Church of St Brides in the City of London.

However the groom and bride give there addresses as Lant St, Borough and York St, Walworth respectively - both in Surrey!!

Am I missing something?

I'm used to the addresses on Marriage Certs not tying up, but this seems odd.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Cheers

The Common Room / Adopted or acknowledging paternity
« on: Wednesday 16 February 05 11:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor Georgiana Clifton who was born illegitimately to Mary Clifton. Mary married Robert Bloor 6 years later. On her marriage certificate Georgiana gives her surname as Bloor and her father as Robert.

Does this mean that Robert adopted her offically or unoffically or might this be an acknowledgment of his paternity.

Robert would have been about 17 or 18 when Georgiana was conceived and he was from London whereas Mary (who would have been 25) and Georgiana were born in Bedford.

Would I be wasting my time following the Bloor family futher back?

What do people think?

Has anyone come across a similar case?

Cheers

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 Census Ulcombe, Kent - WELLS
« on: Monday 24 January 05 09:09 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has the 1861 census for Kent, and could see if they could find the following for me.

Sarah Jane Wells (born 1853, Southwark)

She is missing from the family home in the 1861 census but her father came from Ulcombe in Kent and I wonder if thats where she is or I suppose in Biddenden where her late mother came from

Any help would be most appreciated

Cheers

Chris
