Europe / HELP!!! with a GREEK genealogy, please.
« on: Friday 03 April 15 16:13 BST (UK)  »
i've been working on my cousin's father's family.  i've got a lot State-side, but it is a slog.  one of our friendly chatters mentioned trying here. dawhhh, forgot the European resources.  we are both only children/daughters with all parents dead.

she is half Greek.  i took on this project guessing what it might be like.  we've got feuds, accusations, often, OFTEN!, traveling back to Greece, and name changes--not just to anglicize, and the various spellings of names both phonetically and just plain misspelled. i am looking at a family, LINES, who appear to have come to the U.S. late 1800's.  the name MAY have originally been TSAFOULIUS.  this particular family settled in VERMONT, U.S.  they were from SKOURA, (SPARTA) LACONIA, GREECE.  forenames include JAMES, GEORGE, AUGUSTUS, CONSTANTINUS, NIKOLiUS, and various translations both Greek and English.  almost all generations in VT, U.S. ended up as restaurateurs.  i need to , somehow, verify name; any other info will be gravy.  and i do not speak or read Greek, but i can Google translate if i need to.  THANK YOU

Devon Lookup Requests / Birth/christening/parish records -- REYNOLDS
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
i'm looking for info on James REYNOLDS.  i'm in new england in the states.  with the plethora of spellings as an extra challenge i've only found his supposed birth 1625, Plymouth, Devon (Plymouth Unitary Authority.)  he emigrates 1st to Plymouth Colony then ends up in Rhode Island.  he may have been one of twins.  i can't seem to get correct father; may be John.  he'd be my 8X's grtgrd.  thank you for any help you can give me.

Perthshire / McGOWANS to MCGOUNS
« on: Saturday 28 February 15 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
i hope someone out there might have some clues.  i now have traced my McGOWANs of Kincardine by Doune back to John MCGOUN married to Helin MURRAY (of Kilmadock) in 1694.  they have a bunch of kids that i have followed.  however, John MCGOUN's father is reportedly John MCGOUN married to an Alison YOUNG. i've looked extensively around Perthshire and cannot find even closely matching name variants.  the info i have on them is potentially very flawed. it also seems that this is the time when records become more sparse (mid 1600's back.) being i cannot hop a flight (no $$$) & (i live in US) and search in person, i could really use "boots-on-the-ground" (isn't that just such an American coin phrase, gag) help.  all my searching has to be the free kind, so my next step is rather limited. and i'm not even sure what direction it should take.  people, obviously, moved into the area from somewhere else.  they didn't just pop up out of the mist.  i'm trying to learn where that somewhere else might have been.  THANKS

Perthshire / The McGOWANS of Kincardine-by-Doune
« on: Sunday 15 February 15 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
i'm beginning to get the general geography, but have much to still understand. thanks to all who helped.  but what is a moss? like a moor? with moss? i'm a yank remember; i live in new england; can't go there; feel free to assume i have no clue to what it's like on the edge of the highlands. i'm trying to form a picture of the place.  which leads me to the real question: who knows something of the McGOWANS of Kincardine-by-Doune?

i've read many messages posted here.  i see that at least a few of you have info on my line.  many of the conversations are quite dated, so i thought i'd start fresh.

the generation who emigrated from Scotland (abt 1774) were from Kincardine-by-Doune.  James McGOWAN, parish Kincardine was married to Margaret CLARK, parish Kilmadock. They settle in New York State. there they have a son, William, my ancestor. it would appear from user-contributed info that back from James is James, then John and his father another John.  info is pretty vague and missing a great deal and, often, just carried over from another person's contribution without any legit sources. any help would truly be appreciated.

if you have the McGOWANs as part of your ancestry i'd be glad to try to fill gaps states-side. THANK YOU ALL!

Perthshire / Okay: Kincardine But Isn't Kincardine???
« on: Thursday 15 January 15 21:42 GMT (UK)  »
I'm a McGowan in the States.  I may have my tree back to 1600's, but I'm finding the geography just a wee bit confusing.  I see a Kincardine, a Kincardine-by-Doune, and on and on.  The McG who emigrated, c.1750ish?, appears to be a James McGowan.  I'm not new to genealogy, but geo-politico, timelines, and Scotland are new to me.  I grew up thinking we were Irish Catholic; boy were they wrong.  Of course having such an uncommon name has made it even more of an adventure.  Any help would be appreciated.  There's a post from 2012 that I'd love to PM.  Thanks!
