Hi all,

I have originally posted in the Ireland (General) section here: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=802998.0 regarding my 5th Great Grandmother that I'm trying to trace.

I'm trying to find the maiden surname of Jane, born around 1779, the wife of my 5th Great Grandfather, Robert Pegler, b. 1777 in Bremhill. On one of the censuses she is written as being born in Belfast and on the 1851 census, in what looks like Kilear, Londonderry. She died in Bremhill, Wiltshire in 1866.

I estimate that they may have got married around 1800 but I'm unable to find their marriage in Wiltshire and wonder if it could possibly have taken place in Ireland.

All of their children were baptised in to the Church of England.

They are:

Eleanor, b. 1802, Bremhill, Wiltshire
Anne, b. 1805, Bremhill, Wiltshire
Steward, b. 1808, Bremhill, Wiltshire (I thought this spelling was unusual and possibly incorrect, but it continues on censuses throughout his life, so thought this could possibly be a clue?)
Mary, b. 1810, Bremhill, Wiltshire
Susanna, b. 1817, Bremhill, Wiltshire

In each census they're in Bremhill in Wiltshire. On the 1851 census, Jane's place of birth looks like it's written as Kilear, Londonderry, Ireland - I've been advised that this could be Killea, Kilrea or Kilure - I've also been advised that there are some Stewards in Kilrea so I think this possibly could be a clue.

I also noticed on the 1851 census that they live next door to the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. Could this be significant?

I'd appreciate any help at all in tracking down their marriage and eventually (hopefully!) finding Jane's maiden surname.

Thank you,

Selina

Ireland / Robert Pegler's wife Jane
« on: Saturday 03 November 18 13:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm really struggling to find the wife of my 5th Great Grandfather, Robert Pegler, b. 1777 in Bremhill.

I know her name is Jane and she was born in Ireland around 1779. On one of the censuses she is written as being born in Belfast and on another, in Londonderry.

I can't find a marriage for them anywhere so I'm unable to find out her maiden name. I've searched both in Wiltshire and in Ireland on Ancestry and FamilySearch.

I'd be so grateful of any help at all.

Thank you,

Selina

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Marriage: Robert PEGLER and Jane
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 19:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm really struggling to find a marriage for my ancestors Robert Pegler and Jane.

Robert Pegler was born 1777 in Christian Malford, Wiltshire (or at least that's where he was baptised, on the census he states his birthplace as Bremhill) and Jane, born abt 1779 in Belfast/Londonderry. Their first child (that I've found) was Eleanor Pegler born in 1802 in Bremhill, Wiltshire, but of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that they were married then! However, I've broadened my search and have found nothing. I've found them on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census living in Bremhill, Wiltshire and have found further children, Anne (b. 1805), Steward (b. 1808), Mary (b. 1810) and Susanna (b. 1817). All were baptised in Bremhill.

I thought Steward was an unusual name and could possibly be Jane's maiden name? I thought it was possibly a spelling error but it continues to be spelt this way on all censuses except the 1881 census.

I'm desperately after Jane's maiden name to further my research on her side - is there anything else I can look at to give me some clues?

I'd appreciate any help at all - thank you!  ???

Ireland / History Centre or Archives in Belfast
« on: Saturday 20 October 18 14:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've recently discovered that I have a direct ancestor, born in 1780 in Belfast.

Where would be the best place for me to visit in Belfast so that I can research Parish Records, microfiche, original documents etc? Is there a History Centre or Archives that anyone would recommend for me to attempt to research her further please?

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Taylor - Hilmarton, Wiltshire
« on: Friday 28 September 18 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm at a dead end with one of my ancestors.

Her name is Elizabeth Taylor and she was born in Hilmarton, Wiltshire in 1821/1822. She was baptised at Hilmarton Church on 16th Feb 1822.

She had three illegitimate children, Henry Taylor (b. 1839, Hilmarton), William Taylor (b. 1842, Hilmarton) and Eliza Taylor (b. 1846, Hilmarton). They were all illegitimate according to their baptism records that I saw on microfiche at the History Centre.

My brick wall is that after 1846, Elizabeth just seems to disappear. I can't find a marriage or death record for her and all searches for her on later censuses come up blank or with no rock solid proof that any of them are her (there are some Wiltshire Elizabeth Taylors but no Hilmarton and some of the possible towns seem too far away or not similar enough to have got confused in dictating to the census writer).

On the 1851 census all of her children are living with Elizabeth's parents Henry (b. 1794, Tockenham, Wiltshire) and Elizabeth (b. 1795, Bremhill, Wiltshire) but the Elizabeth in question is not there.

I've searched the Immigration and Travel records but that also comes up blank.

Does anybody have any possible hints or tips for me to look at next? She's very much a tricky lady to track down!

Thanks in advance,

Selina

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Calne, Wiltshire - YAXLEY
« on: Saturday 21 July 18 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a bit of a conundrum.

My mother and her mother (my grandmother) were estranged. We found out a couple of months ago that my grandmother had allegedly passed away in January 2017.

I have been trying to find out the specifics for my mum and to add this information to my family tree but I can't find a record of the death registration anywhere.

Does it take some time to go online? We don't know the exact date of death, but I would like to try and find out more information for my mum.

My grandmother's name at death we believe was Joan Prisca Yaxley (prev. Sprague, nee Kirton). She was born 6th March 1921, but she did sometimes fib about her age and say that she was born in 1926, but I don't know if that would have gone through on her death registration? She was born in Calne, Wiltshire and we believe died there also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering Infirmities on 1911 census
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm having trouble deciphering what is written in the infirmities boxes for the top two people. I can see weak chest at the bottom and weak heart at the top, but I can't read what the other parts say.

I'm also struggling to read what has been written vertically.

Can anyone help make it out please?

Thank you :)
