Just curious if anyone out there is aware of the history with respect to when the Canadian government started using Social Insurance #'s or in general possibly when Social assistance of some sort (re: seniors) started to be a more common place occurrence.

Reason I ask is that I have had trouble in the past trying to find a relative that I know was alive in the 1950's (in Toronto) but Ontario death records do not come up with a positive result. Thus wondered if maybe there might be a way to search from a federal perspective but not sure how one might go about that type of search. Of course privacy laws and the sort will likely be a road block not to mention data from so long ago, assuming it might even still exist?

Any general comments would be appreciated.

Canada / Michael Hennessy & his aunt Mrs J.A. Heffernan (sister of Frank Hennessy)
« on: Sunday 11 September 16 04:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Looking to hopefully find more information related to obituary for relatives of Frank Hennessy...in particular with respect to his son Michael and a sister whose married name is apparently Heffernan.

From the 1955 obituary it reads...Francis Joseph Hennessy, beloved husband of Bertha Rossiter, and dear father of Michael (died ??)and Dorothy (died 1982)...brother of Mrs. J A. Heffernan

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=hennessy&GSfn=frank&GSiman=1&GScid=639447&GRid=103905584&

Unfortunately no knowledge of sister's first name (possibly Helen?) or even if she was also a Montreal (area) resident. Can only assume Michael also lived in the Montreal area. His sister Dorothy is buried with her father upon her passing in 1982. Buried at Notre Dames Des Neiges Cemetery.

Antrim / James Brady and wife Mary Jane Brennan -possibly from County Antrim
« on: Monday 27 July 15 23:18 BST (UK)  »
Looking to trace roots of two individuals who may have immigrated to Canada around 1885/1886.

One fellow descendant of these two individuals believes they came from County Antrim.
What is known:
They were settled in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the mid 1880's. They had at least 4 children.
Three children were born in Montreal. James Joseph in 1886, Sarah Ann in 1887, and another James in 1889. Why 2 James? - not known if perhaps the first James (1886) died at a young age.

Their first child was a female named Mary Brady, but was also known as Molly Brady. We believe that she may have been born in Ireland. She died in 1957 and according to her funeral details she was 73 years old. Thus D.O.B. would be around 1884.

If in fact Mary (Molly) was born in Ireland, the family would have come to Canada some time between 1884 and 1886. September 1886 being the birth of their 2nd child in Montreal.

Canada / John Webber - born early 1900's - worked for City of Toronto
« on: Tuesday 19 May 15 16:59 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about a man named John Webber.
What I do know is that he was alive when his sister (Margaret Brady -nee Webber) died in 1953.
My guess is that he died prior to 1961 - but not certain.
No other siblings as far as I know.

He lived in the east end of Toronto in the late 1930's - on Munro Street (Broadview & Gerrard).
Some evidence suggests he had some farm property out Bancroft way in his later years.
No idea where he was living when he died.

Believe he was married and had some kids.
His wife's name is not certain at this point - but may have been a woman named Violet Potter.

He worked for a City of Toronto (possibly Works Dept) for a period of time.

Canada / William Findlay - died Aug 9, 1945 - Toronto - worked for Ault & Wiborg
« on: Tuesday 10 March 15 19:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Trying to find out more about a William (Bill) Findlay.

What I know:
He worked for a company named Ault & Wiborg and lived to the age of approx. 69. I was not able to find an obituary in the Toronto Star in August of 1945.

He was living at 560 Wellington St. West (at Bathurst) in Toronto in the years leading up to the year of his death (1945). Toronto Archives -tax assessment rolls - shows his spouse to be Theresa Findlay. Facts are that Theresa Findlay was born Theresa Hennessy and was first married in 1911 (in Montreal) to a James Brady, thus becoming Theresa Brady. Thus a second marriage to Bill Findlay at some later date, if they were officially married.

Same tax assessment rolls shows year of birth for Bill Findlay as 1876. Thus meaning he was approx. 69 when he died in 1945. Theresa was still alive when he died and it is not known when she died.

Trying to find out more about the above individuals and their later years.
Some info leads me to believe they settled (at least for a time) in the Rochester, Monroe NY area.

Married in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1909.

Sarah Brady was born in Montreal in 1887 - Hubert Miller I believe was born in England abt 1883.
They had at least two children - Robert Edward Miller (born 1910) and Alice Maud Miller (born 1911).

I am looking for history on the above individuals.
What I know:
Olive, as she appears to be known, was the former Mary Olive Cramer.
Her parents Louis Henry Cramer (died in 1928) and her mother Mary Molly Brady (died 1957) were married in 1912 - in Montreal Canada.

Olive was likely born around 1914. She had a younger sister, Rita Evelyn Cramer.

When their mother died in 1957 (died in Toronto Canada, buried in Montreal Canada) the obituary stated that Olive and Leonard were living in Rye, N.Y.

When they married & their residency over the years is unknown. As is the birth details of Leonard as I have no history on this gentlemen.

Canada / Carl Jacob Maier - died 1970 in Douglas Point Ontario - buried in Montreal
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,
Trying to find out more about the above individual and his family.
He was married to a Rita Evelyn Cramer - her yr of death unknown - but for sure after 1970.

His burial record leaves the following clues:

He died in Douglas Point Ontario - but was buried in the Brady family plot in Montreal at the Notre-Dame-Des-Neiges Cemetery. His wife's mother is Mary (Molley) Cramer - nee Brady.

In addition to the mystery of how he came to be in Douglas Point Ontario - is the fact - that his parish on the burial notice is listed as - St. Francis of the Birds, St. Sauveur, QC.

Any assistance appreciated.
Mike
