Lancashire / Vera Doreen Clark (aka Vera Doreen Uren)
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 17:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I’m researching on behalf of a friend, so bear with me if I need to get back to you with answers to anything.

My friends gran was born Vera Doreen Clark in 1935 to Leonard Clark and Veronica Holliday.
Vera passed away recently and unfortunately would never speak about her family. My friend is trying to discover why, as her gran got really upset when her past/family was mentioned.

She’ not looking to dig up old wounds or lay blame, she just wants to understand what upset her gran so much.

So what we’ve pieced together so far is this:
Parents:
Leonard Clark (b 1901, Hull) and Veronica Holliday (b. 1913, Hull)
There were other siblings including an Evelyne Clark (b. 1937, d. 2007), the rest I don’t have info for.
Vera never spoke to or about her family.

There was talk of being adopted but I’ve discovered that in 1957 at age of 22yo she changed her name by Deed Poll to Vera Doreen Uren and lived with William George Uren and Doris Uren (nee Bailey) in Liverpool. She then became a nurse in 1958 for sick children. She married Arthur Wolstenholme in the 1970’s I believe who I is my friends relative.

We’re not sure if the name change is anything to do with her family issue or if it was unrelated, perhaps concealing something to get in to nursing? Would that have been a possibility then? Not sure what a name change would achieve other than distance you from your own family.

This is pretty much all we have and desperately want to find out why she wouldn’t talk to her family (or maybe they didn’t talk to her?).

The only other information, which I’m not sure if relevant, Vera had bad burns on her shoulder/neck which may or may not be of relevance. It was never discussed.

I’ve attempted to check newspapers for any kind of reports, etc., but was unable to find anything. I can’t seem to find anyone from the Clark family to ask so I’m hoping someone related might be on these forums, or a friend of Vera or even suggestions where I could look next?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Lanarkshire / Motherwell Times Archives
« on: Monday 14 June 10 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Has anyone got any experience of researching the Mother Times Archives at Motherwell Heritage Centre?

I'm looking for an article from 1909 (I hope) about a young Jamaican girl visiting Howsons Land in Newarthill.
Just wondering how difficult that is going to be. Is it search-able or is it trawling though microfiche?

Problem is that I don't know if it even exists. I was told there was a local newspaper article about it, but I can only assume it was the Motherwell Times.

regards,
Alan

PS. If anyone from Motherwell Times newspaper wants to employ me to make a searchable archive, I'm up for it!! ;)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Family of Rev John Howson (1787-1859)
« on: Sunday 13 June 10 18:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find living descendants of Rev. John Howson of Giggleswick.

It's alleged that my gr-gr-gr grandfather Thomas Howson is the son of Rev. John Howson. According to various documents and websites, Thomas Howson supposedly died in Jamaica. There are a few problems with this. Firstly, in 1836 he was at Trinity College and he emigrated to St Catherines, Jamaica on 19 Oct 1837. Yet, the headstone for Rev. John Howson states Thomas died in 1834?

Various stories in my family involve parents, grand parents and uncles who referred to our Thomas Howson as the "Yorkshire man". There's also a claim that a young Jamaican girl arrived in a Lanarkshire village (at my gr gr grandfathers land) in 1909, looking for her grandfather Thomas Howson. It's apparently documented in a local newspaper, although I haven't searched for that yet. The claims say he left Jamaica and sneaked back to stay with his uncle William Howson in New Monkland, Scotland to avoid some kind of crime in Yorkshire. This crime is allegedly the same reason he left Yorkshire and went to Jamaica. The William Howson (who married Ann Hamilton) was born in England according to a 1841 Census and these are the parents referred to on Thomas' Death Certificate. However, there doesn't appear to be a New Monkland birth record for Thomas, who was born around 1819/20.

I'm basically looking for any info I can get about Thomas, William (m. Ann Hamilton) and possibly a Richard Howson (lived next door to William in 1841 Census, also born England). Both William and Richard were Weavers. Anything to confirm Rev. John's son Thomas committed a crime, rumours of him not dying or anything similar.
There's also a story that after the death of Reverend John Saul Howson, one of his sons (also a Reverend) tracked down the family of Thomas to the Lanarkshire village and gave them money to build a house for their mother (wife of Thomas). Thomas died in a poorhouse hospital, so the family had no money at the time, and yet a few years later they bought a large piece of land and built houses on the land for the family.

Very tricky to prove or disprove, so I need all the help I can get!!

Thanks in advance,

Alan

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Howson Family
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 20:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've recently heard about a possible link to my family and the Reverend John Howson (1787-1859). In order to prove/disprove this I'm trying to find out a couple of things. Unfortunately, finding English Records seems more difficult than it is for Scottish Records. Does a service like ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk exist for English Records, or must I purchase each individual Certificate at £7 each?

Anyway, the things I'm trying to find out are:

1) Parents of Reverend John Howson (b. 1787, Clapham, Yorkshire)
2) Details of his brother(s). I've been told that he had a brother William Howson, who moved to New Monklands in Scotland. I have found such an individual who's parents were Thomas Howson and Margaret Burton, but I can't seem to find any information on the parents of Rev. John Howson of  Clapham, Yorkshire in order to link them together.

Hope someone can help,

Alan

Lanarkshire / Croftbank Crescent, Bothwell
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 13:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I'm trying to find out who was in residence at 7 Croftbank Crescent, Bothwell during the period of 1908-1909. Specifically I was trying to find residents between November 1908 and February 1909, but any residents during 1908 and 1909 would be of help.

Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated, especially as I have another address in Edinburgh to do a similar search on.

Thanks,

Alan.

Lanarkshire / John Glen James
« on: Sunday 14 September 08 21:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find a birth date for my granduncle John Glen James.  I've tried ScotlandsPeople and wasted credits for 2 or 3 records which turned out to be wrong.

There's at least 1 or 2 which are in 1910 which might be the ones but I'd rather not pay £10 each to find out they're wrong.

My guess would be between 1900 and 1913 probably in Newarthill, Holytown or Old/New Monkland.

His parents were:
Father: William James
Mother: Hannah Glen

His siblings:
William, 4 Aug 1906 in Newarthill
Robert, 17 Jun 1900 in Airdrie
John Glen, 7 Sep in 1901 Cowdenbeath
Robert, 23 Feb 1903 in Newarthill
Hannah Strain, 23 Jun 1904 in Newarthill

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Alan.

Lanarkshire / 1914 Birth and Scotlands People
« on: Monday 31 March 08 01:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I was trying to find the parents of a Robert Brown Hogg born 1914 in Larkhall. Scotlands People allows me to "order" an extract at £10. All I need is his parents names and possibly their marriage date, is this provided on this extract? £10 is a lot of money, how much information is provided on the extract, has anyone ordered an extract from Scotlands People for a birth after or around 1914? Just concerned about the 100 year rule and therefore what the contents of the extract actually is.

Thanks in advance

Alan

Midlothian / Lookup for James Pennycook
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 00:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Can anyone spare a few ScotlandsPeople credits and lookup a Statutory Death Record for:
Surname: Pennycook
Firstname: James
Died: 1890
Born: 1816
County: Midlothian
Distrcit: Leith

I'm looking for a James who married Isabella Stewart on 14 May 1837 in Glencorse, Midlothian.
In particular I'm looking for information about the parents of James.

His surname on the Marriage entry was spelt Pennycuick, but a free search on SP shows 1 record which I narrowed down to the details above, I'm hoping it's him.
Normally wouldn't ask anyone to waste credits on me, but I've spent my February limit (in January!). Want to stick to my limits or I'll end up taking out a loan for research on SP!  :'(

Any help appreciated,
Thanks

Alan

Peeblesshire / Pennycook/Pennycuick
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I've hit a dead end with my Pennycook/Pennycuick family. I have various family born in and around Peebleshire. Anyone have any of these (or similar) names in their tree around this area?
My earliest entry is of a James Pennycuick who married Isabella Stewart. Not sure where either of these were born, but one of their children was born in West Linton, who then had his own children in Tweedsmuir, West Linton and then Broughton.
As you can see a lot of their births were in this area, but James Pennycuick and Isabella Stewart were married in Glencorse, Midlothian.

regards,
Alan.
