Stirlingshire / Thomas Rae who is the wife Mary or Janet?
« on: Tuesday 20 June 06 01:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am hoping fresh eyes and minds may be able to sort out a small dilemma.

I have the following children born to the above couple all from Scotlands People

15/11/1806 REA MARY THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON  F BOTHKENNAR
06/06/1809 REA JOHN THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON M BOTHKENNAR
15/12/1812 REA HELEN THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON F BOTHKENNAR
27/08/1815 REA JAMES THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON M BOTHKENNAR
22/03/1818 REA ANDREW THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON M BOTHKENNAR
21/01/1821 REA MARGARET THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON F BOTHKENNAR
25/04/1824 REA BETTY THOMAS REA/JANET THOMSON F BOTHKENNAR
17/09/1826 REA ALEXIS THOMSON THOMAS REA/MARY THOMSON F BOTHKENNAR

I also have Mary b 1813 Polmont to Thomas Rae & Mary Thomson
from the LDS site

I can find no marriage for either Thomas & Janet or Thomas & MaryI have the death certificate for Helen Rae and this lists her mother as Mary even though the GRO has her mother as Janet

The LDS site have some of these children born to both Janet and to Mary

Am I going mad or did the mother have an identity crisis?

Cavan / COYLE
« on: Monday 08 May 06 05:32 BST (UK)  »
Posting on the off chance someone may be able to help.  I have always avoided researching Ireland as I have no clue where to begin.

Looking for information on a marriage possibly in Cootehill of  Patrick Coyle (farmer) to Bessie/ Eliza ****Ston*.

Child of the marriage Mary Coyle b abt 1823 in Cootehill came to Australia in 1842.  Her immigration papers list Patrick Coyle (farmer) as a widower.

Mary's  death cert lists her mother as Bessie but she named her 1st daughter Eliza.

I found this 1821 census but I think there is too larg a gap from the last child listed aged 7 for it to be her family.

Townland of Crosserlough Rockes
(Last word not very clear, spelling may be incorrect)
Parish of Crosserlough
Barony of Castlerahan
County of Cavan

House Number 16
Patrick Coyle - Age 46 - Farmer
Eliza Coyle - His Wife - Age 40 - Flax Spinner
Edward Coyle - His Son - Age 15 - Labourer
Eliza Coyle - His Daughter - Age 12 - Flax Spinner
Peter Coyle - His Son - Age 10
Jane Coyle - His Daughter - Age 9
Patrick Coyle - His Son - Age 7

Mary was a domestic servant who could neither read or write and was Roman Catholic.

Any clues any assistance greattly appreciated

Stirlingshire / Farquhar Laing
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 09:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have Farquhar as a female forename running through my tree for several generations.  occasionally spelt Pharchar or Farchar and often listed as Falconner.

2 that puzzle me because I can't link them in are:

Farquhar Laing b abt 1786 married William Wilson about 1804.  William I believe was born 1781 larbert to Robert Wilson & Isobel Laird.  From the Monumental inscription William died 1824 Falkirk.  Farquhar died between 1851 (census Larbert) and 1855 - cant find her death on the SP site.

Who were her parents?

2) Farquar Laing b 1819 (daughter of David Laing & Jean Penman) who married Archibald Morton 1841 Bothkennar & 2) James Russell 1868 Polmont.  While I have her parents I have no idea of her father's birth or marriage.

Any suggestions greatfully accepted.

Stirlingshire / Aitken
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 09:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello to everyone.

I have Aitkens from Polmont, Falkirk, Slamannan and Larbert.  Some strayed further afield to Edinburgh, Kilsyth & Glasgow but generally they just hung around Stirling until they made the big pilgrimage to Australia in 1913.

I have chased down Aitken links in every direction and have found many that are not connected to me, so if you are looking for any, let me know as I just may have the certificate your are looking for.

Connected names are:
Wilson
Laird
Rae
McLuckie
Marshall
Dunlop
& Just about any other Stirlingshire name you can think of

Cheers

Stirlingshire / James Rae & Margaret Sutherland
« on: Sunday 05 March 06 03:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on this couple.  James b abt 1787 (possibly Polmont) a shoemaker m Margaret Sutherland b abt 1771).

I can find no record of their marriage or any children but know they had at least 3 children Livingstone b abt 1820, Isabell b abt 1813 and George b abt 1823 - from his death.

I have Margaret's death and James' but unfortunately he died in the Falkirk Poorhouse and his parents were not named on the certificate.  I am looking to find his parents and also looking to see if he had a daughter Jane.

Jane married 1) John Gillespie 1841 & 2) John Knox 1780.  On her 2nd marriage her parents were listed as James Rae shoemaker & Jean ?  On her death, her parents were listed as James Rae & Elizabeth Sutherland.

I think she belongs to James & Margaret but am not sure.

any help welcome

Hi There,

I am hoping someone has access to the OPR for Slamannan & Muiravonside. I have this couple who posted banns in both Parishes as follows from the GRO records

17/10/1767 AITKEN JOHN MARY MARSHEL/FR623 M SLAMANNAN 489/00 0002
06/11/1767 AITKEN JOHN MARY MARSHEL/FR275 M MUIRAVONSIDE 486/00 0001

I am in contact with 16 people who are all descendants of this couple who married 1742 in Muiravonside and that is amazing.  There are still a few children of the couple whose fate is unknown.  Can anyone help here and is anyone related to this family?

Children
Andrew Rae b 1743 m Margaret Bartholomew
James Rae b 1746 m Jean Baird
David Rae b 1748 - no trace
William Rae b 1751 m Mary Thomson
John Rae b 1753 - no trace
Margaret Rae b 1755 - no trace
Peter Rae b 1758 m Elizabeth Gardiner 1783 Polmont - no further information
Thomas Rae b 1762 m Helen Evan/Euan

If anyone connects to this family or can shed any light on the "missing" members, I would love to hear.

Regards
Dano
