Family History Beginners Board / Why register a birth in Canada?
« on: Thursday 16 July 20 11:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have someone born in Leith, Scotland (supported by a birth registration) who subsequently moved to Canada, where the birth was registered, stating the birth was in Leith.

Why would you do that?

Family History Beginners Board / George Johnston & Euphemia Taylor
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 20:38 GMT (UK)  »
I’m trying to find out when & where George Johnston married Euphemia Young Taylor; she was born 14th December 1868 in Leith. Euphemia was the daughter of Thomas Taylor and Elizabeth Tosh Watson. The only thing I know is the year George & Euphemia married - 1894.

I’m also trying to find out a bit more about George & Euphemia’s children.

Thomas died and Elizabeth married again to a James Ross.

The 1901 census has James Ross and Elizabeth living at Bonnington Road, Leith with, amongst others, Euphemia and two granddaughters, Isabella Johnston, born 1894 in Leith, and Elizabeth Johnston, born May 1900. Euphemia was listed as Euphemia Taylor Ross, not Johnston. Elizabeth Johnstone was born in Kilmarnock, which seems strange as the family was based in Leith.

George is not listed as living there so where was he? The marriage seemed OK as the Johnston family emigrated to Philadelphia in 1905, minus Elizabeth – what had happened to her?

I’m a bit stuck; can’t find much on Ancestry (before they went to US – once in US there's plenty of information) or Find My Past or Scotland’s People so I was wondering if anyone can add to the above? Full dates & places would be great, pointers to certs even better!

Family History Beginners Board / Another 123 Crescent Road, Crumpsall, question
« on: Thursday 06 September 18 20:36 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate (dated 1918) for a relative that gives place of birth and mother's address as 123 Crescent Road, Crumpsall. I understand this is to hide that the place is a workhouse.

The birth certificate also states mother's occupation as domestic servant at her parent's address.

Does this mean the parents sent their daughter to the workhouse to have the baby to save face?

Is there available a list of admissions for this workhouse?

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Margaret Henderson v Anna Henderson
« on: Monday 19 February 18 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
According to FreeReg, an Alexander Tailyer married Anna Henderson on 17th May 1715 (FreeReg says 16th April 1715 but gives 17th May in register notes) at Athelstaneford. They then went on to have several children (at least 5 I think).

In LDS, on 23rd Feb 1718 a William Tailyer, son of Alexander Tailyer and Margaret Henderson, was baptised in Athelstaneford. This is the only reference to Margaret Henderson that I can find (other SP has the same baptism record). The witnesses to William's baptism include a Patrick King who was also witness to most of Anna's children's baptism.

There is no record I can find of Anna having a son William, and may be I'm finding connections that aren't relevant but could Ana and Margaret be one and the same!?

Antrim / Edith Mildred Taylor, Belfast
« on: Thursday 18 January 18 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out about an Edith Mildred Taylor who died 11th June 1965, aged 53, and was buried on 14th June 1965 in plot C5 417, Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast. This plot is also the grave for Helen Drysdale Peffers (17/03/1876 - 08/03/1948) who married Gilbert Dempster Taylor (born 8th March 1874 in Haddington).

I know about Helen & Gilbert but Edith is new to me. FindMyPast has a birth in 1913 for an Edith M Taylor but I don't know if this is the same one as I don't have full access to FindMyPast.

Can anyone help me understand who Edith is and why Edith & Helen are sharing a grave?

« on: Friday 22 December 17 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone prove or otherwise that Catherine Taylor (daughter of Peter Taylor and Rachel Dunbar) born 18th March 1819 in Haddington is the same Catherine Taylor that married George Dickson on 10th November 1855 at Haddington?

Thanks,

Family History Beginners Board / William Henderson Taylor & Craig Inches 1917
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

According to William Henderson Taylor's RN service record, he was sentenced on 2nd January 1917 to 30 days hard labour in Craiginches Prison, Aberdeen, while serving in the hired trawler ‘George Scott’  but the reason is not given.

Is there any way to find out why he was imprisoned? Unfortunately Fleet Air Arm couldn't help.

New Zealand Completed Requests / James Albert Taylor & NZEF Reserve
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

James Albert Taylor (1880 -1920) joined, in September 1916, the New Zealand Expeditionary Force First Division of Reserve for No. 19 (Poverty Bay) recruiting district.

Is there any site where I can determine if James was actually called up and did any service?

I have the same questions for James' nephew, William Hughes (1890 - 1971).

Family History Beginners Board / Glaves John Burke
« on: Friday 24 November 17 21:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I need some help tracing a 'Glaves John Burke'.

According to Southern Cemetery, Manchester, England, records Glaves John Burke was buried on 23rd Oct 1918 in the same grave as Margaret Frances Smith. I'm aware of the Smiths but I've no idea who this Glaves John Burke is. I can't find anything about him; the name may be a typo and even transcribed in to the wrong grave (I've had that before).
