Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who were the witnesses
« on: Wednesday 05 September 18 21:03 BST (UK)  »
Good evening. Can anyone work out who the witnesses were at the marriage of Gilbert Corlett and Dorothy Brough in Moresby, Cumberland 1789. I have tried every combination of letters possible but I can not find out who they are. I am hoping that they are related in some way.
Thank you

Ayrshire / Damhead of Culzean
« on: Friday 27 April 18 17:47 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors was a cooper at Damhead of Culzean. I know that a cooper made barrels but can anyone tell me anything about the place. I assume that it is near Culzean but I can not find any references to the place. Many thanks.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help with date please Mckinnon Falkirk
« on: Thursday 12 October 17 17:01 BST (UK)  »
This photo was taken in Falkirk, Scotland. Assuming that he also lived in that town, the fact that he is balding and that this photo was in my uncle's family history file suggests to me that he is a Mckinnon...but who.
Being able to put a date to this photo would greatly assist me in working out who he may be. I am hoping that there is something particular about his tie and collar that might help.
Thanks in advance.

Scotland / Scottish surname change
« on: Tuesday 05 September 17 21:32 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor was born John McKennay in Maybole, Ayrshire, in 1802. His predecessors also appear to be McKennays in the same area. By 1824, however, in his first marriage he is shown as McKinnon. His second marriage is the same and the Mckinnon name has continued until this day.

I have checked on Scotlands People and there do not appear to be any Mckinnons in Ayr, birth/marriage/death in the period from 1700 to 1800. However, by the early 1800's there appear to be many Mckinnons in Ayr.

I read somewhere that certain clan names were proscribed following the Jacobite uprisings and that this was not rescinded until the 19th Century. Is this correct as this may be an explanation for the name change. The McKinnon clan certainly fought for the cause.

Ayrshire / Mckinnon family Parish of Kirkoswald 18th century
« on: Monday 04 September 17 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone done any research into the Mckinnon family in the Parish of Kirkoswald and the surrounding district of Ayrshire. I can, with some certainty, go back to John Mckinnon who was born Maybole in 1802. I think that his parents were James McKinnon (McKinnay in the parish register) and Mary McCleland.
Family folklore has the McKinnons coming from Arran but I have nothing concrete to support that view.

It would be great to hear from anyone.
Many thanks. Alan

Durham / Brick Wall
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 16:54 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with my brick wall.

Joseph Nicholson marries Ann Young at Penshaw in 1802. They have three sons William (b 1799), Joseph (b 1801) and Henry (b 1803). The baptismal records state that the father is of Lamesley Parish and the mother of Bowden (Boldon) Parish.

I have found Ann Young being baptised in Boldon in July 1775. This turned out to be a rich seam.

I can find nothing for Joseph Nicholson of Lamesley. I have looked on Ancestry, Find My Past, Durham BMD, Freereg etc.

Can anyone help? Alan

The Common Room / Marriage a long time after birth!!!!!!
« on: Tuesday 25 April 17 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Joseph Nicholson and Ann Young were married at All Saints Church, Penshaw, on the 25th April 1802. On the same day and and in the same church, they baptised their two first children. The first of these children was born in 1799, the second in 1801.

My question is simple. Was it usual for society to accept two people living together for that length of time after having children? Joseph was a Husbandman so his employment was probably not a reason as to why he may have been away from home.
