Glamorganshire / Missing in 1891
« on: Tuesday 09 March 10 22:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have been trying to find a number of people in the 1891 census with no success.  I have previously posted looking for Benjamin and Sylvester (female) Jones with no joy.  I was looking, in particular, for Sylvester's mother Naomi Thomas. I have recently found out that she re-married prior to 1891.  Her husband was Mark English.  I have searched for them with no success.  I think that they were living close to one another.  In 1881 Noami and Sylvester were in Brithdir and in 1884 Noami and Mark were married in Cwmsyfiog.  Naomi died in 1898 and Mark is on the 1901 census.

Were there any districts missing in this area from the 1891 census?

Angus (Forfarshire) / Railway Death
« on: Monday 09 March 09 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Dear All,

I have a possible ancestor, James Wilkie, who was killed in a railway accident.  He was a railway labourer and his death extract states that death was instantaneous - a railway engine having driven over the body.  The accident took place at the Bridge of Dun railway yard in 1858.

Where could I find out more details?

I want to confirm his wife or children's names - the death extract only states he was married.

He was buried in Brechin Church yard.

Armed Forces / Served in Boer & WW1
« on: Friday 04 July 08 13:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am researching the soldiers on a local war memorial.  I have found that a number had previous military service and either re-enlisted or were called up from the reserves.  I have the service records for one of the soldiers (James Fowler - RAMC) who stated on his attestation papers that he had previously served with the Somerset Light Infantry. From the documents he seems to have initially enlisted in the Welsh Regiment and served for about 1year before being transfered to the RAMC.  The grounds of the transfer were that he had a disability and was unable to march.  It then states that this was due to a gunshot wound to the leg received 13 years before in S. African War.

Would there be a seperate service record for his service with SLI?

Would they be stored in Kew?

Are there any casulty lists for such a case in the Boer War?

Are there any medal rolls available?

Angus (Forfarshire) / Merchant Seamen's Details
« on: Monday 17 December 07 11:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am interested to find out where I may find details of merchant seamen with Dundee as their home port.

I have found two so far on my family tree and they are almost impossible to trace as they are never home on Census night.  The latest is Peter Baxter  c1830 - 1891.  He was married to Margaret Gray (d1863) then Catherine Robb (d1889) and then Elizabeth Tawse (I cannot find the marriage, but her name is on his death extract).  He had a number of children with both Margaret and Catherine.

I would be grateful for any information.

Devon / South Molton Union Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I received a birth certificate for Thomas Forward born in South Molton in Aug 1861, son of Naomi and Samuel Forward.  Naomi and her son Samuel are on the 1861 Census for South Molton. Samuel was 1 and born in South Wales.

On the birth certificate it states that Thomas was born in the Union Workhouse, although the family address was West Street.

I did a search on the National Archive Catalogue and found that the minutes for the South Molton Union Workhouse for that period.  Would they mention individuals and events such as births?

Naomi re-married in 1863 in South Wales (where she originally came from).  If Samuel had died and she was dependant on the Poor Laws is it likely that she would be sent home to her home Parish?  Would this be minuted?

I would be grateful for any help.

Scotland / Corrected Entries
« on: Wednesday 31 January 07 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I suspect that this has been covered before, but I couldn't find anything about it.  I have downloaded a birth and death certificate from Scotlandpeople and they have corrected entry information in the margin.  How can I find out what the corrected entries are?  Are they available on-line?

Angus (Forfarshire) / James Wilkie, Brechin
« on: Tuesday 16 January 07 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Can anyone help?  I have a James Wilkie (b c1818) in my family tree.  He married Isabella Leighton in Brechin c1840.  I have them on the 1841 and 1851 Census (Ancestry), but James has gone by 1861.  I have searched for a death on Scotlandspeople and found nothing.  I assume that he died between 1851 and 1855.

Are there any MI or parish burial records for that period for Brechin?

Many thanks

Stirlingshire / ELizabeth Brown (nee McQueen) St Ninnians
« on: Monday 20 November 06 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I think I have identified my 5xGreat Grandmother as Elizabeth Brown (nee McQueen) from Stirling.  I have pulled her death extract from Scotlandspeople. She died in Janurary 1856 in St Ninnians, however it stated she was a widow with no mention of her husdbands name.  She was 82 when she died and the death was registered by a neighbour.  The death extract states that she was buried in the Church yard of St Ninnians (certified by James Archibald gravedigger).

Would there be a parish record of her burial and would it mention her husbands name?

I would assume that she was not well off and unlikely to be a headstone, but on the off chance are the any MI's available for this graveyard could some one point me in the right direction or check for me.

Many thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / Forfar Death
« on: Wednesday 15 November 06 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

My 3xGreat Grandfather William Rae was born in Forfar c1814.  He spent 17 year in the Army (92nd Reg of foot) before being dischared at the age of 34.  He married Elizabeth Brown in Stirling in 1847 and had two children William (b1850) and Alexander (b1852) both born in Forfar.  I have found him on the 1851 Census living in Forfar and working as a hand loom weaver.  In 1861 Elizabeth is living in Stirling and is widowed.  I have tried Scotland People to find William's death, but to no avail.  I think he may have died prior to 1855.

Does anyone know where there may be a Parish Record of his death/burial?

The IGI has a record of Williams birth in 1850, but not of Alexanders in 1852.

I would be grateful for any information.
