Cheshire / Egerton Burgess and back to Egerton!
« on: Tuesday 18 September 18 20:45 BST (UK)  »
Thanks to a message/hint on Roots Chat from another member I have been following a branch of my family but have come to a halt and one that I'm not sure I can get round. I'm hoping that the experts on here can maybe give me some pointers:

Emily Egerton b1906 Halton Lodge Cottages. Father Fred Egerton Mother Mary Ellen Cooper.

Fred Egerton c1868 Woodhouses Frodsham. Father James Egerton Mother Sarah Littlemore

James Egerton c1832 Swanlow Lane Winsford. Mother Anne Egerton "single woman" on baptism record.  Also his sister Maria Egerton c1830 again mother Anne Egerton "single woman" on baptism record.

Anne Egerton c1811 possibly Church Minshull.

Anne Egerton married a John Burgess  30th December 1835 in Church Minshull. Witnesses were a Charles Egerton and a John Briscall. No other details on the parish register ie fathers names or professions.
I have found Anne Burgess nee Egerton living in Church Minshull with her husband John and 3 of the children named as Egertons and 4 named as Burgess on the 1841 census.
I'm having problems tracking them after this census.  This is where I need help and would appreciate any pointers.

Just a wee bit of background on the family.......
On the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census my GG Grandfather James Egerton was named as Burgess, this was when he was living in Frodsham. When he married Sarah Littlemore in 1859 he used the name Egerton.  My G Grandfather Fred Egerton was named as Burgess on the 1871 and 1881 census but again he used the name Egerton when he married Mary Ellen Cooper in 1892. My grandmother, Emily Egerton was always named as an Egerton as were all her brothers and sisters.

My thoughts are that James Egerton was born out of wedlock, father unknown as there is no name of a father on his baptism record?
I am going to have a difficult time finding out who Anne Egertons father/family were? Is this where this branch ends?
Sorry if I haven't explained things too well, I tend to get myself tied in knots! Thanks for reading.

Lancashire / Zachariah Kent
« on: Monday 16 July 18 14:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to find Zachariah on the 1891 census. He is on the 1881 and 1901 census but I've tried all different combinations of looking for him. Different spellings of his name, maybe with brothers or sisters etc etc........all to no avail.

He was born 10th May 1873 in Tunstall Staffs but appears for the first time on the 1881 census in Warrington living with his father and siblings. He then stays around Warrington for the rest of his life until his death in 1948. He was my husbands great grandfather.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks ever so much.

Lancashire / Happy Smith
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 21:17 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a wee bit of help........

Happy Smith Born Wigan c1885.
Married John Edward Hughes in 1908 in Wigan.
Census 1911 named as Happy Hughes working as a servant laundry maid at Winwick.
Married James Rowles 1911 in Warrington.

I cannot find a copy/record online to look at of either marriage, I suspect that they may have been register office or non C of E church marriages. Is my only hope of finding out more info to buy the certificates? I would like to know why she remarried so quickly, was she widowed so soon after her first marriage? And without John Edward Hughes fathers name and occupation etc I'm not sure how I can learn anymore about him to see if and when he died.

This research is for my oldest friend, I was chatting about doing my family tree and when she told me her Grandmothers name was "Happy Smith"I couldn't resist trying to find out more! My friends mum was not aware that Happy may have been married before marrying her father James Rowles.

Australia / Family called Gay, Ashford, Adelaide. WW2?
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 15:22 BST (UK)  »
My father in law, Evan Roberts,  passed away last November aged 94. Towards the end of WW2 he spent 9 months in Adelaide recuperating after an accident. He had injured his arm on an aircraft propeller. He was in the Royal Navy and was billeted with a family in Adelaide by the name of Gay.

After his death we found photographs of his time in Australia. On the back of one was a message to his little daughter, Dorothy,  from the family he was staying with. It also had an address. We think it says The Gay family, 17 Marleston Ave, Ashford, S Australia.  Does the street still exist, are any family members still in the area? We have often wondered about this family who looked after Evan so well.

Just before his death he was awarded the Ushakov Medal by the Russian Government. This was awarded for his service and bravery on the Russian Arctic Convoys during WW2. Evan was from Warrington in Lancashire, England.

I know this is a long shot trying after so long but thought it worth a try.  Many thanks.

Cheshire / Samuel Wilkinson 1871 Census.
« on: Sunday 12 July 15 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Hopefully someone can help me..........This is what I believe to be correct so far.

Samuel Wilkinson born 1853 died 1946. ( my GG Grandfather)
He married Martha Cooper ( my GG Grandmother) in 1874 at Acton Parish Church and Elizabeth Ralphes in 1881.

I can find him on the 1881, 1891,1901 and 1911 Census no bother. But I have a puzzle come the 1871 census. I have found 2 Samuel Wilkinsons, one who appears to have the "right" people living with him but the wrong age and one with the right age and possibly living with his parents.

1871
Beach Lane Weaverham.
Samuel Wilkinson age 28 head....Gardener
Martha Wilkinson age 24 wife...........I think this might be Martha Cooper
Mary E Wilkinson age 7 months daughter.........I think this is Mary Ellen Cooper, my G Grandmother but she would have been aged 3 as she was born c1867.
Rose A Wilkinson age 3 daughter ..........Could the ages of the children just been swapped/written  around by mistake?

1871
Baddington
John Wilkinson age 65 Ag Labourer....Samuels father was named as John Wilkinson on marriage certificate.
Dinah Wilkinson age 55 wife
Samuel Wilkinson age 17 son Brickmaker......this would be the correct age.
James Wilkinson age 13 son.

I'm leaning towards the Beach Lane Weaverham being the correct Samuel, but would be interested to know the thoughts of much more experienced folk on here.  And is there anyway to be sure?

Many thanks.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Mary Ellen Cooper Fred Egerton
« on: Thursday 09 July 15 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I've hit a brick wall and am hoping that someone can help. It's probably my inexperience as I'm quite new to the family research.

My grandmother, Emily Egerton b1906 Halton Lodge Cottages,  birth certificate states that her mother was Mary Ellen Egerton formerly Cooper and her father Fred Egerton.

Fred Egerton and Mary Ellen Cooper marriage certificate 19/01/1892. Frodsham.
Fred was a labourer and his father was named as James Egerton.
Mary Ellen no occupation and classed as a spinster, her fathers name was written as Samuel Wilkinson.

Mary Ellen would have been born c1869 and according to 1911 census she was born in Coppenhall.
I just don't seem to be able to see her on census before 1891.

Any help would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Hunt Warrington Look up
« on: Saturday 27 June 15 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi this is my first time of posting so I'll try and explain as best I can.

My Grandmothers name was Hilda Owen nee Litherland. Her mother was Lilian Beatrice Litherland nee Hunt.

I have the birth certificate for my Great Grandmother Lilian Beatrice Hunt. B 4/5/1889. Her father was Matthew Hunt and her mother is named as Alice Hunt formerly Webster. The informant was her mother and she was born at home, 43 Lythgoes Lane, Warrington.

I have the marriage certificate for Lilian Beatrice Hunt and my Great Grandfather Richard Litherland. They married 18/12/1911 at the Register Office, Warrington. Again her father is named as Matthew Hunt and has the same occupation as on her birth certificate so I'm fairly positive I have the right ones.

My problem is that I cannot find a record of a marriage between Matthew Hunt and an Alice Webster.

Please can any of you good folk out there with an awful lot more experience than me who is a real beginner at this kind of thing help with any advice?

Many thanks to anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction.
