United States of America / Tombstone AZ 1880's - Wilfred Heyes
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any details I can find on a Wilfred Alfred Heyes, born in Liverpool around 1833 who I believe was working in Tombstone around 1881 as a watchmaker.

From Ancestry I have the 1881 & 1882 Voter Registrations showing him in Cochise, Arizona and the Arizona Territorial Census from 1882 just showing him as resident in Arizona.

His brother Richard died in San Francisco in 1881 and in one of the newspaper reports it says Wilfred lived in Tombstone.

I was wondering if anyone had access to any business directories or documentation that might be able to help me fill out more details of Wilfred's life.  I haven't been able to find a death or burial record for him either and have no idea if he married.

Any an all help greatly appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Missing Johnstons in or around Sheffield
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 14:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone might be able to help me with a Sheffield related brick wall I have been unable to break through for several years.  I am trying to find records for the birth of my Gt Grandfather, James Johnston and the marriage of my 2x Gt Grandparents.  I believe these events happened around Sheffield but there is a distinct gap in the records I have been able to find.

Details: 2 x Gt Grandparents
Charles Johnston born bet 1827-29 Monaghan, Ireland
Harriet Thompson born abt 1823 Sheffield.

Details: Children
James Johnston abt 1852 Sheffield (no birth record found)
Phoebe Johnston abt 1855 Sheffield (no birth record found)
Mary E Johnston abt 1857 Masbrough (no birth record found)
Harriet Johnston abt 1858 Sheffield (no birth record found)
Charles Joseph Johnston 1860 Liverpool (birth record found)
Edward Johnston 1862 Liverpool (birth record found)
Amy M Johnston 1864 Liverpool (birth record found)

Timeline:

1851 Census – Charles seems to be working as a Tailor in Clitheroe
1851 – Presumed marriage of Charles and Harriet
1851 – My Gt Grandfather, James, is born in Sheffield
1861 – Family is living at 3 Brown Court, Liverpool. Charles listed as Tailor Journeyman
1871 – Family is in Widnes at 36 Lugsdale Road. , Charles listed as Master Tailor

I cannot find birth or baptism records for the first 4 children born 1852-1858 nor can I find a marriage record for Charles or Harriet.

I have a public tree on Ancestry I can provide a link for with more info. I wasn't sure if I should do that or not in this post.

Any clues or where to look next would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Mike

Canada / Where to Start Finding John Edward Johnston migrated 1924
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I was hoping someone might be able to advise where I can look to try and try and find information on a cousin who migrated to Canada in 1924.

Details are:
John Edward Johnston born 15 Oct 1895 in Widnes, Lancashire
Parents: Charles Joseph Johnston and Elizabeth Ramsey
1901 Census: Living at 26 Sayce Street, Widnes, Lancashire, England (Recorded as Edward)
1911 Census: Living at 104 Church Street, Flint, North Wales (Recorded as Edward)
Departs 25 Jul 1924 from Liverpool on the Montrose
Arrives Aug 1924 in Quebec and arrivals form gives occupation as Farmer

It looks like the "Destined To" entry says: C.P.R. Land Agent Winnipeg.

Is the CPR the Canadian Pacific Railway and is there somewhere I could look to see if I can find out what happened to him?

It seems he came back to England in Jul 1926 but I haven't established how long that was for yet.

Thanks

UPDATE: OK Hands up, schoolboy error.  Just found him in the 1939 Register.  I'd still be interested to know what the CPR entry is and why he may have been heading to Winnipeg.

Thanks

Canada / HELP! Discrepancies Between Death Reg & RCA Records
« on: Tuesday 16 August 16 14:35 BST (UK)  »
I’m was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this discrepancy I have (apologies for the long posting).

I’m working on my maternal Grandmothers ’Rolfe’ line, which for all intents and purposes is a brick wall.  All I knew was she had a brother called Frederick Rolfe who was sent to Canada by Barnardo’s. With the help of the kind folks on rootschat we found records for a potential Fred who matched what I knew about him and also a family in London in the 1901 census from which I think he came.  We also found a Frederick Charles Rolfe as being buried on 27 May 1952 in Beechmont Cemetery Edmonton with a military RCA headstone.

To confirm this Edmonton RCA Frederick was mine I requested a copy of his military records using the number on the headstone.  These documents list my grandmother as his next of kin at the correct address.  I’m therefore confident this is my Fred and here his DOB is recorded as 24/03/03, with the place of birth as West Ham.

In my searching I thought I had seen another potential Fred Rolfe pop up in Canada, so to double confirm I had the right man I also ordered a copy of the Alberta Registration of Death.  In this document the DOB is different and is given as 17 Apr 1899 in Leyton (which is close to West Ham) and the parents recorded precisely match the family in London I found on the 1901 census .  I also ordered a birth certificate for the Fred in the 1901 census, which again exactly matches the details on the RoD.  This looked like it could be a different Fred, however, in the RoD the date and location of burial exactly match those for RCA Headstone Fred in Beechmont (which if you're still with me is MY Fred).

I can only find one Frederick Rolfe buried in Alberta within the timeframe I know he died.  So, given that the burial date on the RoD matches exactly the RCA Fred in Beechmont and the RCA Service record for the Fred in Beechmont is definitely my Fred, why would there be a discrepancy in the DOB's of 4 years and the different location of birth recorded?  I assume the information on the RCA Service Record was recorded from what Fred said at the time and I can believe he may not have known his DOB, but where would the accurate RoD information come from if Fred didn't know it?

To add the confusion there is also an index for a Frederick Arthur Rolfe born Q1 1903 in West Ham. I haven’t looked into him any further!

Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Other Countries / MALTA - Help or advice needed
« on: Thursday 23 June 16 17:42 BST (UK)  »
I have a brick wall with my research and was wondering if anyone knew how I might be able to find records from Malta for my Gt Uncle and his family.

Details are:

Joseph Houghton Johnston b. 1879 Widnes, Lancs, d. 1924 Newcastle.

He married a Matilda from Birchicara, Malta, possibly around 1904/5.

They had 3 children:

Anne b. 1905 Floriana, Malta
Joseph Charles b. 15 Aug 1907 Aldershot
Eleanor b. ABT 1910 Southport, Lancs

I believe Joseph served in the forces and was stationed in Malta.  Perhaps he served in the Army, given that his son was born in Aldershot.

I am having trouble finding Matilda, Ann or Eleanor after 1924 and am wondering if they might have moved back to Malta.  I have managed to find a decedent of Joseph Charles, but unfortunately they don't know anything.

Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Canada / Looking for Robert and Martha Johnston Arrived 1924
« on: Thursday 31 March 16 13:42 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping the good folks of RootsChat can help me again.

I am trying to find any information I can regarding my Great Uncle and his family in Canada, unfortunately I have very little to go on apart from his arrival record.

Details are as follows:

Robert Johnston born abt 1886 in Rainhill, Lancashire (date from 1891 and 1901 census).
Died around 1958 in Canada.

Father: James Johnston
Mother: Anne Isabella Houghton

Spouse : Martha (no other details known)

Arrived 12 Apr 1924, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (Arrival record attached)

Stated Occupation: Farmer.

Robert and Martha had a family but I have no other details, however, I believe they were in regular contact with my Aunt for quite a while, perhaps during the 60's, 70's, 80's.

There is a plate in the family that depicts Banff National Park which I believe came from Roberts family.  However, I guess they could have just gone there on vacation and liked it so much they brought a plate!

I haven't turned up anything much on Ancestry yet apart from the arrival record, so any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Canada Lookup Request / Military Headstone Help Needed
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
I believe I may have found my Gt Uncles grave in Beechmount Cemetery in Edmonton.

I live in the UK and am unfamiliar with researching in Canada, so I have two simple questions:

1. Is there any information that can be gleaned from the inscription?  I assume the M number is his service number.

2. Where can I go to get more information.  Can I request his service record from somewhere?

Hopefully a picture of the memorial is attached to this posting.

Many thanks
Mike
