These are my 4x great grandparents. I have traced Job Turner back several generations but I have had no luck tracing Mary Downes. The marriage states 'married by license' both of the parish of Badby. Does not say if she is a spinster or widow.

I have searched variations on the surname Downes, looked at surrounding parishes, tried to find a Mary marrying someone with the surname Downes a few years earlier. No Luck - I am stumped!

Please can anyone help or suggest where I look next?
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Charles COLE 1768 - 1820
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 16:52 BST (UK)  »
Charles COLE b 2 Sep 1768 Stepney, London d Oct 1820 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea was a Lighterman.

His first son Charles Philip Waite COLE (1796-1859) was apprenticed to his father on 5 Jul 1814.
The document states
"This Indenture Witnesseth That Charles Philip Waite Cole Son of Charles Cole Citizen and Skinner of London doth put himself in Apprentice to his said Father by Trade a Lighterman and living in Chaney Row, Chelsea, Middlesex"

I am confused as Charles COLE was a lighterman, as was his son CPW COLE, so what does 'citizen and skinner of London mean? I thought a skinner was someone trading furs.

Can anyone help?
Thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / Mary FAWLEY died onboard Panmure in 1887 - look up
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am tracing Mary ROSE born 1832 Croydon Surrey, first husband Francis GRIMSLEY, second husband Francis FAWLEY.
As Mary FAWLEY she boarded the Panmure with husband and daughter Emily bound for Australia. Unfortunately she died while at sea (off the coast of Brazil) on 19 June 1887. I have a copy of the passenger list which shows her death.

I was trying to find out if a death cert would have been registered, but the only record I have found is on Find My Past.  It shows a different birth year  :
Fawley Mary b1838   d1887  New South Wales Deaths 1788-1945
Location : Marine, New South Wales, Australia

Would she have been buried at sea?
Do you think 'Marine' records a death at sea? If so, could someone look it up please?
If death registered can I order a copy cert?

Any advice gratefully received
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Parker family from Deptford, Kent (now London) mid 1800's
« on: Wednesday 29 November 17 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
From the 1841  and 1851 census I have found John Parker b c1800 of Kingston Surrey (Oil labourer/ Oil puncher) and wife Sarah c1806 of either Wandsworth Surrey or Bethnal Green, Middlesex - living in Flood Street Deptford. (The 1861 census shows Sarah as a widow, living in Addey Street Deptford).

From census and baptism records I think they had 11 children between 1828 and 1852.
I tried searching the GRO birth records for those children born after 1837  (Amos, Richard, Susanna, James, Charles and Jane) to find Sarah's maiden name so that I could investigate her further - but no luck!!

Any help gratefully received.

Family History Beginners Board / Jeffrey Fendall / St Benet Pauls Wharf London
« on: Friday 08 September 17 16:20 BST (UK)  »
Jeffery Fendall (speliing changes Findall etc) baptised 25 Feb 1688 in St Nicholas Deptford. All baptisms for children show him as a Butcher in King Street Deptford.

1st marriage to Mary Paine 19 Oct 1720 in St Benet Pauls Wharf London - register shows both from Deptford, so why marry there?
He had 2 daughters Eliza 1722 and Mary 1726 both in Deptford. Wife Mary Paine died in 1727 in Deptford.

Had another daughter called Mary in 1744 in Deptford - by another wife? Usually do not repeat childrens names unless one dies, but Mary of 1726 did not die - married an ancestor of mine. Cannot trace another marriage until 7 Jul 1746 when he married a widow called Amelia Ariskin (Fiskin?), again in St Benet Pauls Wharf London, both shown as from Deptford.

Does anyone know why he would have married in St Benet Pauls Wharf London although from Deptford and all his children were baptised in St Nicholas Deptford?

Any help appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Jane DEAN born c1809 - Shenley, Herts?
« on: Monday 28 August 17 13:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

JANE  DEAN was the second wife of Thomas Scott COLE, they married on 22 Jan 1826 in St Marylebone Middx.

The 1841 census in Southwark shows approx age 30 and the 1851 census in Chelsea shows age 42 (b 1809), birthplace Shenley Herts. I cannot trace the 1861 census - she would have been a widow as Thos Scott Cole died in 1859.

She died 4 Aug 1869 Chelsea, aged 60 (I have death cert).

Without the 1861 census I cannot confirm birth details, and I have been unable to trace her birth record. I have searced for the birth/baptism using Ancestry, Find my past etc without luck, so cannot go back any further generations.

Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Louisa Matilda Parker c1836
« on: Friday 18 August 17 18:20 BST (UK)  »
Louisa Matilda Parker married Robert James Withey (b 1837) on 27 Jul 1862 in Rotherhithe Surrey. On the marriage cert it shows 'full age' 'spinster' and fathers name Henry Parker occupation Oil puncher.

I have found the 1871/81/91 census after their marriage but cannot find a birth / baptism or the 1841/51/61 census.

On the census she stated Deptford Kent as birthplace, but birth year differed on each one from 1836 to 1842 to 1843.

I would like to find the missing census and get her birth and parents details .
Can anyone help please?

Thanks!!

Family History Beginners Board / George Frederick HARRIS - WW1 records
« on: Thursday 10 November 16 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
I think he was born in 1893 possibly in West Ham, but cannot trace birth cert. (Done lots of searches!) The 1911 census shows a George Frederick Harris age 17 as a private in 2nd Royal Sussex Regiment (regm no LSR/1252) at a barracks in Chichester.
His son's birth cert in 1918 says he is 'ex-private 3rd Royal Sussex Regiment'.
I contacted West Sussex Records Office who hold the regimental records but they said they couldn't find his records - apparently lots were destroyed in the Blitz.
I am now completely stuck - can anyone help me please?
