The Common Room / Sir William Dickson. 1898-1987
« on: Thursday 18 October 18 16:13 BST (UK)  »
To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War our local history group are remembering Sir William Dickson, who was born in Northwood Middlesex in 1898 and died in 1987. He was a Royal Naval Air Service aviator.
An RAF personnel estate in our area which was built in the 1950s named their roads after several WW1 pilots;  Tedder, Slessor, Salmond and Dickson. When the RAF left and the site was redeveloped Dickson Road ceased to exist while the other three remained. On Friday October 26th the park is to be renamed Dickson Park in his memory.  This renaming will be carried out by the Lord Mayor of York and representatives of the RAF.
If there are any relatives of Sir William Dickson who would like to attend please send me a personal message and I will give you details.
We have information about his life from Internet sites but any extra information or photos from Rootschatters researching his family would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

The Common Room / Demolition date
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 20:43 BST (UK)  »
A property I am interested in was demolished at some point between 1973 and 1976. The local paper called for its demolition as it was an eyesore and dangerous but after trawling their archive between those dates I can find no article about it having actually been pulled down. Locals only seem to remember it going but not sure when exactly. Where can I find this information. Do people need planning permission for a demolition in the same way they need it for building?
Thanks for any help.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / York brick making industry
« on: Sunday 22 July 18 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I have  just started researching the brick making industry in York, in particular the brick yards in the district of Acomb. If anyone out there can reccomend useful books or have memories of the yards and people who worked in them I would be very grateful.
Many thanks.  Thornwood

The Lighter Side / Victorian health
« on: Friday 09 March 18 17:36 GMT (UK)  »
I read an article in the Times today about the diets of Victorian agricultural workers as opposed to their counterparts in the towns. Apparently a study has been done and it was found that agricultural workers were often paid in food and ate a similar diet to the Mediterranean diet which today is thought to be a healthy way of eating. Those in the towns were paid in money or in 'vouchers' to spend in the local shop often owned by the factory owner. Even with money milk and vegetables were often not available to buy.
In my family one side lived in the country and worked on the land; maybe they were lucky but in Victorian times I found none of the mothers dying in childbirth and very low infant mortality.  The other side of the family moved to the towns and worked in industry. I have men who married two or three times as their wives had died and many children dying before the age of five.
I had noticed this in my research, now a study has been done which gives a reason and the conclusion that it was better for your health to be a country peasant than a factory worker. I suppose the enclosure act was a reason for people moving to the towns in great numbers.

Armed Forces / RAF at Church Fenton Yorks
« on: Thursday 08 March 18 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the housing in my local area. In four of the roads families from RAF Church Fenton were housed. I believe the houses were built around 1957 and demolished at some time in the late 90s or early noughties. The roads were Tedder Rd, Slessor Road, Salmond Rd and Dickson Rd, in Acomb York. I would like to know exact date of building and which squadron was housed there. Also when did they leave, I know after the RAF left some of the houses were sold very cheaply and others were used by the council as local authority housing.
Any information would be great or if anyone out there actually lived on the estate and have any memories even better.
Thanks for reading

The Lighter Side / Early Assumptions
« on: Saturday 20 January 18 20:59 GMT (UK)  »
I started the search for my ancestors when retiring ten years ago. I still consider myself new to the hobby but recently thought back to how naive I was in the beginning.
I made many assumptions and just wondered what others believed in their early days of research.
Here are a few of mine:

All Ancestry trees were accurate.
All my ancestors would have a grave stone.
Census records were legal documents so must be 100% accurate.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Ainsty Hunt Kennels in York
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 09:58 BST (UK)  »
As a member of The Foxwod Local History Group in York I am embarking on research into the Kennels and the people who worked there. The kennels kept the hounds for the Ainsty Hunt and were situated on Kennel Lane (later to be called Foxwood Lane) in the district of Acomb. I think they were built in the mid 20s and were demolished at some time in the 70s.  From old photos there is a house  with the other buildings so presumably a family lived on the site.
Any info from root chatters would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Australia / What happened to Frank Porteus
« on: Saturday 18 February 17 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Frank Porteus, born in York in 1909  married  to Marjorie ?  lived at 12 Grassmere Rd Blackpool UK.  He and his wife emigrated from Glasgow docks on 13 th May 1949 to Australia, docking in Sydney aboard the P&O ship Empire Brent. I have found the outbound passenger list giving these details.
The family in the UK heard nothing more about him.  When his sister died in the 1980s a man was at the funeral but left quickly afterwards. Family members wondered if Frank had returned.
Any information about what became of Frank and if indeed he did return to the UK would be greatly appreciated by the family. (my next door neighbours).
Many thanks

Leicestershire / Wigston workhouse
« on: Saturday 17 December 16 22:47 GMT (UK)  »
From my research I believe that Wigston Magna (Great Wigston) had a workhouse but can find no reference to its whereabouts. I know it was demolished and I think that Wigston people went to the Union Workhouse in the newly built one at Enderby. Any information, dates etc on this topic would be appreciated.
Many thanks.   Thornwood.
