Hi,

I'm trying to get some further information on my 6th Great Grandfather John Bray.  He died in 1804 after the trade ship (Betsey) he was on went missing with crew presumed drowned on 7th Dec 1804 - near Broadstairs.  He was involved in New Foundland and Portugal trades.  According to his wife's (Susanna Bray) application to Trinity House he was Master for many years on "Vifoils" (I don't think that spelling is correct - it is difficult to decipher on the trinity house petition image) with the ship returning from the Island of Newfoundland.  The only site I have found any reference to him is on the Guildhall Library Lloyds Index.  John Bray married Susanna Townsend in Combeinteignhead Devon in 1790.

Some of the other websites I have looked to try to get more information on the ship and John's maritime career include-
Findmypast, maritime history archive, Hull history centre, Lloyds register foundation, wreck site

I'm very unfamiliar with Maritime research and records, therefore not sure if I am missing information or just searching incorrectly so any help would be greatly appreciated.

A few questions I have are -
Where exactly is the broadstairs area?
How long did a ship need to be missing before sailors deaths were registered?
The Betsey was a "Brig" - Are there any vessels classed or named "vifoil"
Susanna's petition to Trinity house wasn't until 1809 - were petitions normally only lodged once family had fallen on hard times and needed assistance?
Thanks Mel

Australia / Cemeteries in Bridgewater South Australia 1870's - Ann Garland
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 09:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to locate where a family member (Anne Garland) may have been buried.  She died in Bridgewater (Adelaide Hills) South Australia in 1871, so I'm assuming she would have been buried around the area, her husband stayed on in Bridgewater for a number of years after her death.  All searches of surrounding cemeteries have not come up with anything.

There was a methodist cemetery in Bridgewater (now cleared) but not a huge amount of information is available on line, no burial records, why is was cleared or dates it was in use.

There also appears to be a Bible Christian Church which was in use around this time - different location to the Methodist cemetery. But once again cannot find any information online if there was a cemetery attached to the church.

I plan to go to the historical society to see if they have any information, but though I would try my luck on here as well.

Australia / Adelaide Hills sandstone quarry near Aldgate/Mylor
« on: Friday 30 June 17 07:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
It's a long shot but thought I'd ask on here......I'm trying to track down the location of a quarry between Aldgate and Mylor off of Strathalbyn Rd that was operational in the 1950's that delivered sandstone for house building in the local area.  I know there was a quarry in Aldgate township itself (closer to Stirling) but I'm not convinced this is the quarry I'm after.  I have had a look online without much success in finding any reference.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

« on: Saturday 03 June 17 11:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to track down the location Wilson place, Spitalfields.  I believe it is very close to Flower and Dean St but have not found a map with the actual location.  I'm not sure if there is one considering it is listed as a 'place' - perhaps it is too small?  Can anyone help?

Kent / Plaxtol original parish records - Mary Brey 1821
« on: Tuesday 18 April 17 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Does anyone have access to original images of Plaxtol parish registers?  I have a ancestor - Mary Brey baptised 28 Oct 1821, Plaxtol, parents John and Mary Brey.

John Brey was a sailor however, from the information I have received the record is ? unreadable for the part in which it states John was a sailor in ???.

It would be extremely useful to know if he was in the British Navy or other trade company.  I do not have access to the original images, can someone help please?

Surrey / Maria Smith - Removal orders and Workhouse Admission Mint St 1859
« on: Saturday 08 October 16 07:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

After some general thoughts and help.....

One of of my ancestors Maria Smith (born approx 1828) was admitted to the St Georges Workhouse, Mint St on 21/7/1859.  She has her children with her -  Lavinia Sarah aged 13, Elizabeth aged 10, Caroline aged 9, Emily aged 8, Alfred aged 6, Edwin aged 5, Susan aged 2 and Frederick aged 1 month.

The records states that they were subject to poor removal order St Mary Bermondsey, Widow of Edwin Smith Soap Maker Manchester.  How long after the death of a spouse did families normally get removed?  I can't find any removal order record, which I'm assuming there would be, perhaps I've been looking to long and can't see the forest for the trees!

I'm assuming Edwin Smith died somewhere in Lancashire if the workhouse mentioned Manchester (Manchester wouldn't be a birth place?)  Fredrick's baptism record lists Edwin is the Father, so if this is correct, Edwin would have died after September 1858.

In 1851 the family (including Edwin Smith) is listed as living at 21 Pitt St, St George the Martyr, Southwark.

Maria Smith re-marries William Ward (another shoemaker) in 1894 with children born to this relationship - Matilda Maria in 1863 and Priscilla in 1866 (both in the parish of Bermondsey)

Kent / Where is New Court Gravesend?
« on: Wednesday 05 October 16 01:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have an ancestor listed on the 1851 census as living in New court Gravesend.  I haven't been able to find much information about the location of this address except..... from newspaper articles that it is at the north end of Red Lion Passage, West St, Gravesend.  I have found West St on google maps, but nothing else when searching.  I get the impression it wasn't an overly nice area to live.  Can anyone shed some light on the location?

Thanks Mel

Devon / Where/What is Coomb Anthony?
« on: Monday 08 February 16 06:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping someone may have some information or heard of Coomb Anthony, Devon.

I have a ancestor who listed this as a place of abode (Coomb Anthony near Newton Bushel) on the birth record of his child in 1821.

After enquiring with the Devon record office, they are unable to find any record of Coomb Anthony in their list of places/maps or find reference online. They have suggested it could be the name of a house or small settlement not found on maps.  Hoping someone may be able to shed some light??

Thanks Mel
