Staffordshire / Any reason why an ancestor would use two last names?
« on: Friday 17 March 23 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
Doing my husband's tree and very confused on this.
His ggggrandmother, Ellen/Eleanor, married Richard Merrick in 1836 in Bushbury, Staffordshire. She got married as Ellen READY.

Basically, I determined that she is the child of Joseph Meredith and Margaret Green. They had 8 other kids besides Ellen/Eleanor b. 1815:
Mary Meredith
1813–1877
William Ready (burial as Ready)
1816–1818
John Meredith
1818–1893
George Meredith
1821–1855
Benjamin Meredith
1822–1891
Charles Meredith
1824–1898
Alexander Meredith or Ready
1827–1900
Elizabeth Meredith
1831–1906

It seems the kids all flip flop back and forth between using "MEREDITH" and "READY" as their last name? I also can't seem to find a marriage record for Margaret Green to either a READY or a MEREDITH so I am extremely confused.

Any idea what might be going on here and why two different surnames would be used?

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Newcastle St John - baptism of "fatherless" child
« on: Tuesday 22 November 22 18:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to find a baptism for my mother's great-grandfather, Anthony Turnbull.
Anthony's birth registration gives his birthdate as 10 Nov 1862 in Kenton, Northumberland. There is no baptism record for him in Gosforth which Kenton was part of.

However, his mother, Mary Jane Turnbull, married David Nixon (NOT Anthony's dad - proven by DNA and he never claimed David to be his father in any records) in June 1863 in St John, Newcastle and she is listed as a resident of the parish.

I am wondering if perhaps she gave birth in Kenton, at her parents' house, and then had Anthony baptised in St John where she might have lived at that time?

I am hoping his baptism might shed any sort of light on his parentage - I know it's a long shot.

If someone might be willing to check St John 1862 and 1863 baptisms for Anthony, I would appreciate it!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Help with Holroyds
« on: Friday 04 November 22 18:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to sort out my husband's Yorkshire family and finding it difficult because there are so many people with the same surname and given name in the area.

Elizabeth Holroyd married Levi Lumb on 2 Sep 1838 in Elland, Yorkshire. She says her father is William Howard, a mason, and her name is Elizabeth Howard. Yes, HOWARD. Not sure why. She signs with an X. I know she is a Holroyd because her mother, Mary, and a couple of siblings are living with Levi and Elizabeth in Elland (or vice versa) in the 1841 census.

Mary is also living with Elizabeth and Levi in 1851.

I am trying to figure out which William and Mary Holroyd are Elizabeth's parents. In some trees I see Mary Gill and William Holroyd. I had the 1807 Elland marriage of William Holroyd and Mary Barrand assigned to the couple, but now I am not so sure because I don't think their first child was born until 1813 (although there is a William and Hannah Holroyd living with the Lumbs in 1841, and it looks like William is 35, which could work). Next door there is also a James Holroyd, but I don't know if he is related.

The name Holroyd is super popular in the area, as is Lumb. I have also struggled to identify Levi Lumb's parents because there are multiple Levi Lumbs born to John Lumbs in the same area! Go figure.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Durham / Carl/Charles Hebner's multiple wives?
« on: Tuesday 03 November 20 01:06 GMT (UK)  »
I am so confused. Through DNA, I've identified Charles/Carl Hebner/Hubner as a candidate for my mother's mystery great-great grandfather (her great-great grandmother had her great-grandfather, Anthony, out of wedlock in Nov 1862 in Kenton, Northumberland and the father's name is not listed on the certificate).

But he is making my head spin. Per my DNA matches' family trees, he was born in Prussia in 1832 and married Elizabeth Atkinson in Sunderland, Durham in 1856. Elizabeth is home alone as "Ship carpenter's wife" in the 1861 census and Charles/Carl is nowhere to be found. They are together in subsequent censuses and appear to have a few children, and she dies in 1885.

I did a search in the FindMyPast newspapers for him and was really confused to see two separate obituaries for wives of Charles Hebner of Sunderland: one in 1885 (Elizabeth) and one in 1876 (Lydia).

I then did a search and found 2 marriages: Carl Hubner and Lydia Belcham in 1862 in Sunderland district, and Charles Hubner and Elizabeth Atkinson in Sunderland in 1856.

Naturally, I would assume these were 2 different couples, but when I looked for census records, I found in 1871 two different families in Sunderland:
Charles   Hebner   Head   -   Male   30   1841   -   Scotland
Lydia   Hebner   Wife   -   Female   30   1841   -   -
Frederick F   Hebner   Son   -   Male   7   1864   -   Durham, England
Lydia   Hebner   Daughter   -   Female   5   1866   -   Durham, England
Frances B   Hebner   Daughter   -   Female   2   1869   -   Durham, England

And then:
Charles   Hebner   Head   -   Male   39   1832   -   Germany
Elizabeth   Hebner   Wife   -   Female   33   1838   -   Durham, England
Regina   Hebner   Daughter   -   Female   8   1863   -   Durham, England
Frederick W   Hebner   Son   -   Male   5   1866   -   Durham, England

But after 1871 I can only find 1 Charles Hebner anywhere in England. So are these two different people? His oldest son with Lydia, Frederick Fountain Belcham Hebner, doesn't re-appear until 1911 in Kent. His daughter Lydia appears in 1881 as a housemaid to another family in Sunderland. I cannot find Frances, his youngest, anywhere in 1881.

To make matters more confusing, Ancestry trees assign both these Charleses to the same parents in Pomerania, Germany so it seems I am not the only one confused. Any help sorting these people out is greatly appreciated and then I can get back to work on whether Charles could also have been the spurious father of Anthony!

Down / Echlins of County Down - Ontario, Canada
« on: Tuesday 09 June 20 20:28 BST (UK)  »
I am helping my fiance research his Echlin family. He is descended from Robert Echlin, born 1788 in County Down, Ireland, and his wife, Elizabeth McDowell or McDole b. 1783 in County Down. The family appears to have worshipped as Presbyterians, but also as Methodists (maybe depending on church availability in Canada). In Canada, Robert Echlin was a "yeoman" farmer per census records.

The family moved to Ontario, Canada by about 1837 with their children:
Hessie (Hester) Echlin b. 1813/4
Robert Echlin b. 1814
James Echlin b. 1816
George Fleming Echlin b. 1818
Charles Echlin b. 1821
Henry Maggiford Echlin b. 1825
John Echlin b. 1827
All the children were born in County Down according to their various death certificates, tombstones, etc. in Canada.

Several ancestry family trees have attributed Robert Echlin Sr to the Echlin family of Echlin-ville, a landed family in County Down, but I haven't found evidence for this. The only "evidence" is the last name, county are the same and also some of the names of the kids (Robert, George Fleming, Hester/Hessie are names used in the landed gentry branch of the Echlin family). In my own tree, I have seen family members try to connect themselves to wealthier families by using their names so I don't consider the names in common proof of anything.

I am trying to figure out how I can start looking for baptism records for the children, a marriage record for Robert and Elizabeth, or any other records in Ireland that might help narrow down this family's background.

Any help is appreciated!

Canada / What happened to Mark Wyse for 28 years?
« on: Wednesday 30 October 19 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Mark Wyse was born as Michael Wyse to Irish-born parents Andrew and Jane Nickle Wyse in Buffalo, NY in Nov. 1851. His father was Catholic and his mother was Protestant but they married in a Catholic Church and Michael was baptised a Catholic.

By 1861, the family moved to Eramosa, ON, Canada. In 1870, they had moved to Sleeping Bear, Michigan. And the Michael/Mark disappears.

When he reappears, it’s 1898 and he is marrying Anne Hatt in Lions Head (Eastnor), Ontario and he how goes by Mark. He also seems to be Protestant now, as he marries in a Protestant ceremony and lists himself as Church of England in future records. He says he is a Bachelor and a mason.

He stays in the Lions Head area and appears in 1901, 1911, and 1921 census before dying there in 1928.

So where did he go for 28 years? Why did he change his name? Worth mentioning is that his entire family stayed in Michigan. He may have left for work, but I cannot find him in any census records in either Canada or the States.

Also unusual is how late he married Anne. He was 47, an unusual age for a first marriage at that time. They had several children.

Any help on where he might have disappeared to is much appreciated!

Lanarkshire / William Scott, Pettinain
« on: Friday 21 June 19 01:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about parents and siblings of William Scott. His death certificate on 1 Apr 1859 gives his parents' names as William Scott and Agnes Turner and puts his birth year at about 1789. Census records seem to give his place of birth as Pettinain, Lanark.

William marries in Lanark, Lanarkshire in 1821 to Marion Ballantyne daughter of the late William Ballantyne, Miller of Eddleston near Peebles (not sure how they would have met...maybe she worked as a maid in Lanark although no occupation given on the marriage record).

William later lived in Lesmahagow (by 1841), where he died.

I can't seem to find records of a William Scott/Agnes Turner marrying or having children in Pettinain.

My family has passed along a long-standing rumour, as probably a lot of Scott families have, that there was some connection to Sir Walter Scott...given names, occupations (labourer!), and location I highly doubt this and would like to disprove it once and for all so I don't need to keep hearing it!  ;)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Denbighshire / Jane Roberts of Llanelidan
« on: Friday 26 April 19 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I’m stuck on my ancestor Jane Roberts. On FindMyPast, I found her Banns with William Edwards on 1 June 1807. William was of the parish of Llangollen and I’ve been able to trace his line a good distance. But Jane says she is of this parish (Llanelidan). And I know little about her. Witnesses to Banns were Margaret Davies and David Wynne. The couple then went to live in Trevor Uchaf in Llangollen.

Jane says she is age 50 and born in Denbighshire in the 1841 Llangollen census. She then dies between 1841-1851 (need to find the burial record). Jane and William had 10 children, last being born in 1831, all born in Llangollen. Their names in order: Mary, William, Ann, Eliza, Edward, Richard, Sarah, Harriet, another Edward and another Ann.

Any help finding Jane’s baptism and/or family would be very much appreciated. Only my father’s paternal line (Ellis) is Welsh so I am not as familiar as their records as I should be!

Canada / Finding James McGuire late 1800s
« on: Tuesday 09 April 19 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I’m stuck on James Maguire/McGuire. He was born about 1844-1847 in Ireland. He was Wesleyan Methodist (except for one census where he’s described as Presbyterian). I first found him marrying Jane/Janet McGregor in 1862 in Brant in a Methodist ceremony.

He first appears in the 1871 census with his family in Kinloss, Ont. In 1881 he is in Kinloss again and then disappears in 1891. I relocated him in 1901 in Eastnor (Aka Lions Head) and he died in 1907.

On his marriage record, his parents are John and Jane. I cannot find him in 1851 or 1861, 1891 and complicating matters is that there were multiple James Maguires in the area. Helpfully, at least, my James was Protestant making him slightly easier to identify.

A couple of trees have him born in Goderich, On but I reached out and they don’t know where they got that info. I also can only find James’s FindaGrave record, not his burial or death record.

Any help is gratefully received in sorting this out!
