Somerset / Somerset Monumental Inscriptions NORMAN/BAGEHOT
« on: Tuesday 12 February 19 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a family on FindMyPast and have come across a monumental inscription for George NORMAN b 1853, d 1807, Langport, Somerset. This is definitely the right person.

There is an intriguing note "Husband of Ann (daughter of Thomas and Priscilla BAGEHOT, decd.). c1910 copy of this lost MI incorrectly recorded year as 1808, but PR: says he was buried on 18 Dec 1807. See also KENT"

Does anyone familiar with the Somerset MIs know if the notes would have come from the memorial itself or is some extra knowledge from somewhere else?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Conserving / donating 1780s(?) wedding clothes
« on: Friday 04 January 19 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have been donated a bag of heirloom clothes from my husband's family, which includes a hand-embroidered satin waistcoat, like in Beatrix Potter's Tailor of Gloucester, and what is presumably his bride's skirt, which would have been worn with hip and bum pads by the look of it.

Looking online, the style seems to be around 1780s, and there is a very likely family tree wedding in Somerset for that time.

My query is what to do with them. They are in very good condition, but literally just stuffed into plastic bags. I don't know if they are museum quality - I imagine as they are partial outfits maybe not - and while it would be wonderful to see them on display and know they are properly conserved, I'm not sure about donating something of such meaning to the family which then just gets stuck in a vault somewhere.

On the other hand, if I keep them, how should they be looked after?

What would you do? Any ideas gratefully received!

Somerset Lookup Requests / NORMAN / BAGSHOT 1780s - twins?
« on: Friday 04 January 19 08:50 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not familiar with the Somerset records and am wondering about the children of George NORMAN and Ann BAGSHOT (later known as Bagehot), as found on FreeReg. https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/5c2e99cd33045bea0ba4a52a

Our old family tree, which was "tidied up" in the 1930s, records the births to this couple as:
George [1782]
William [no date]
Charles [1783]
Priscilla [1785]
Maria [1785]
Alfred [1792]
Sarah [no date]

However, from FreeReg, does it appear to you that Ann Bagshot had TWO sets of twins in 1782 and 1783? Quite a start to child-rearing!

Or is there any possibility that children were "saved up" to be baptised later than their birth date? Have you ever come across that? According to FreeReg, the marriage was actually in 1776, with no record of baptisms before 1782.

Thanks very much!

Isle of Man / 1929 Alfred Norman King death - newspaper report?
« on: Sunday 17 February 13 19:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I am puzzled that an ancestor is buried at Port St Mary despite living in the Scottish Borders and having no links (that I know of) wih the Isle of Man. The only thing I can think is that he died while on holiday and I am hoping there might be a newspaper report if this was the case. His name is Alfred Norman King, died 15th August 1929, age 82.

I would be very grateful for any pointers at all.

Thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Actual image not transcription for Hinderwell/Lythe
« on: Saturday 08 September 12 13:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

How do I go about finding the actual image for a marriage record, as I hope there may have been a transcription error? The marriage is on the IGI as Robert KING m Elizabeth HILL, 01 Dec 1734 and is registered both at Lythe and Hinderwell.

I am wondering if the mother's surname might be KELL, which would be very handy for me, but obviously would need to see the actual record in order to find out if that was a possible reading of the name.

Thanks very much

The Common Room / Needing info from Len Goodman's WDYTYA episode
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
I was keeping my recording of Len Goodman's WDYTYA appearance because I wanted to show my daughter the now derelict Polish fort where his ancestor Josef Sosnowski was incarcerated. She is coming tomorrow, so I have been looking it out in preparation. Guess what - I seem to have deleted it...

If anyone has a copy, it would be wonderful if you could you possibly fast-forward through it and see if there is a name and location for the fort - then hopefully Google will have some images I can find.

I'm so cross with myself!

London and Middlesex / 1881/91 census - tracking down a house
« on: Monday 03 October 11 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone with access to the censuses could do me a big favour?

I am visiting London shortly and would like to find my ancestors' house in Blackheath. I have their census records, but it would be very useful if I could find out the names/numbers of neighbouring houses on the pages before and after.

The family in question are

Alexander Currie, b 1833 Stepney
Jessie Currie b 1834 (a complete lie, but that's another story) Scotland
and children: Oswald, Rosina, John, Winifred, Mabel (only John and Winifred in the 1891)

The address of the house is "Leslie" Mycene Road (1881) / Mycenae Road (1891)

I already know that a neighbouring house is "The Woodlands" on the 1881 census and "Stanley House" and "Piercefield House" (both on a different street, which makes me think their house was on the corner) in the 1891. What I would dearly like to know is what comes before and after in both censuses.

Very grateful to anyone who takes the time to have a look at this.

Canada / Victoria BC newspaper 1933
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 14:32 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I can access newspaper archives for Victoria BC? I am looking for an article that would be from around September 1933.

Many thanks
