Family History Beginners Board / Ann Chater
« on: Sunday 16 February 20 19:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to to find the surname of my 3 x great grandmother's mother Elizabeth.
Ann was baptised 3/4/1991 in Wallsend, Northumberland. Her father is listed as William Chater and her mother as Elizabeth.
I have found a marriage transcription for a William Chater and Elizabeth Moore  dated 12/5/1788 in Christchurch, Tynemouth.  There are many baptisms shown for the children of  a William Chater in the same location. Some give the mother as Elizabeth Moore, some as Elizabeth Murray, and some as just Elizabeth.
I cannot find a record for a marriage for William Chater and Elizabeth Murray.
Is anyone able to help or give suggestions
Many thanks

I wonder if anyone can help. I am trying to determine who Albert's parents were. There is a lot of conflicting information around this. There is baptismal transcription in the Cape records for 1/5/1672 stating his parents as Lammert Lammerz and Aaljie. The Geslacht register der Oude Kaapsche familien states his parents as Jan Lambert Meijburgh and Anna Maria De Laar. Many other websites are just as confusing with Albert's parentage stating a birth for him around 1690 but I am unable to find any records for this.
I wonder too where the surname Meijburgh fits in as it is not used in many documents - lammert is just called Lammert Lammerz.
I understand that Lammert Lammerz and Aaljie Albertz came from the Netherlands with Jan Lambert who was born in Buiksloot. The information I have read states that Jan did not have any sons and that Albert was the progenitor of the Myburghs at the Cape. However there is a baptismal record in 1710 in The Dutch Reformed church records for an Albert Myburgh with parents stated as Jan Myburgh and his 2nd wife Sophia Zank. This Albert did marry and have a son!
I would welcome any clarification for this.
Many thanks

Northumberland / William Skipsey hunnam
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 23:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I am trying to find the parents of William Skipsey Hunnam born in North Shields around 1804. He married Eliza Thomas Lovering in 1842 in Swansea. She is in the 1851 census with her sister in the household and also in the 1861 census as a widow. William was a mariner and I have a copy of a Masters certificate of service dated 1852.
The BMDUk shows a death in 1863 for a William Skipsey Hunnam but I am pretty sure that he is the son of George and Sarah Hunnam  who was born in 1841 also in North Shields and was also a mariner.
Many thanks

Dublin / Arran Quay address
« on: Tuesday 08 August 17 22:20 BST (UK)  »
I will be in Dublin in a couple of week’s time as part of a 6 week trip to the UK visiting places where some of my ancestors lived, worked and were buried. I am having a bit of difficulty with one Dublin address and wonder if anyone can help please.

In the 1901 Census the address is given as being “House 1, Highfield, North Circular Road, Arran Quay, Dublin” and in the 1911 Census it is given as being “House No 2, Highfield House & Cottage, Arran Quay, Dublin”. I am assuming that these addresses are for the same or adjoining houses back then.

I would like to see where these addresses are and hence would like to know if the houses remain today and what the actual current address is?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / What happened to Alicia Tatlow (nee Elliott)
« on: Monday 24 October 16 21:23 BST (UK)  »
The facts I have about Alicia are:

Born abt 1824 in Lancashire (parents Arthur Elliott and Elizabeth Matthews)
Married William Tatlow 12 Nov 1843 at Christ Church Chapel, Every Street, Manchester
Had daughter Emily 25 Dec 1845 in Sheffield
Had son Joseph 18 April 1851 at Brighton Terrace, Pitsmoor, Sheffield (my great grandfather)

There the story of Alicia ends. She is not mentioned in the 1851 census taken 3 weeks before Joseph was born, but William and Emily are mentioned in that census as staying with the Truswells at Newark in Nottinghamshire.

William and a Matilda Louisa Henn then start having 6 children beginning with Frances Marian in 1858 in Birmingham. William and Matilda marry in Kings Norton, Worcestershire  in 1866.

So what happened to Alicia? I cannot find any mention of her after Joseph’s birth and I cannot find a death record for her. In his autobiography “Fifty Years of Railway Life in England, Scotland and Ireland” Joseph does not mention his mother Alicia! Did she perhaps die giving birth to Joseph?

Any thoughts or answers would be very welcome.

Berwickshire / Alexander Wood
« on: Friday 07 October 16 22:21 BST (UK)  »
I believe that my great great grandfather Alexander Wood was the son of George and Agnes Wood. The 1851, 1861,1871 and 1881 census state his birthplace as Langton, Berwickshire. I have found a birth transcript and birth entry for him but these give his birth as 1819 and the census documents give his age as being related to being born in 1817-1818. I can only find one Alexander Wood born in Langton around that time.
Alexander was married to Helen Thomson in 1847 and I have all subsequent information since then.
Does anyone have information on the Wood family?
Many thanks

Durham / george hunnam
« on: Friday 07 October 16 04:39 BST (UK)  »
My great great great grandfather was  George Hunnam, a master mariner who was born in Murton and married married Jane Heaviside in 1804 at St Hildas in Durham.

I have found a baptism entry in the Durham Diocese bishops transcripts stating he was baptised 4/7/1780 and his father is named as George, a hynd in Murton. The 1851 and 1861 census states he was born in Murton

The transcripts taken from the "England births and Christenings" state that he was baptised in Tynemouth 4/7/1780 and his parents were William Hunnam and Mary Skipsy.
His grandson was named William Skipsy Hunnam which seems too much of a coincidence.

I have never been able to find parish records for any of George and Jane's children and have only the census records to gauge their ages. they all lived in the North Shields area.

Does anyone know anything about this family? I do have all the details and most of the records for his grandchildren and subsequent generations.
Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Dorothy Atkinson
« on: Friday 17 June 16 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Dorothy Atkinson was married to John Story in Morpeth in1824. She was born in 1802 in Morpeth and her parents were Amos Atkinson and Mary Creighton. I have now found an Ann Atkinson born in Morpeth in 1799 with the same parents and presumed they were sisters, but Ann's birth entry states her as the 4th daughter and Dorothy's as the first daughter. I found the birth entries by scrolling through the Bishops transcripts.
Does anyone know anything about this family?
Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Grace Crammon
« on: Friday 17 June 16 23:20 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find the birth date and details for Grace Crammon born around 1820 in North Shields. Her father was Arthur Crammon and I believe her mother was Ann Chater. Grace married Stephen Harrison and then George Hunnam. I have scrolled through the Bishops transcripts and did find a birth for a William Cramen with the above parents. He could be her brother.
Many thanks
Margaret
