The Common Room / Help me find Granddad!
« on: Tuesday 12 November 13 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
I am not new to FH, having been working on both my husband's and my families for a few years now, but I have never been able to find my Granddad Thomas Murray's birth record. He was born in 1882 and in all census returns his birthplace is given as Southport. Their records are part of the Ormskirk Registration District, but there is no trace. In 1881 the family was living in North Meols which is just outside Southport and in the same Ormskirk district, but by the 1891 census they had moved back to Altrincham in Cheshire where his mother was born, and Granddad's name is given as John T or John J? His father has disappeared from the family and is difficult to trace as his name alternates between Walter, Daniel or sometimes both.
Granddad's Military records are also very elusive and I am at my wits end. If I didn't remember him from my childhood, I would be thinking he never existed!

Has anyone any ideas about where else I could look? Parish Registers haven't turned up anything either

I have discovered that two ancestors of the Little family died in Jamaica in the early 1800s. One was resident at Crescent, St Catherine, and the other at Bellfield, St Catherine. The information is on their gravestones in their home village of Kirkpatrick Juxta in Dumfriesshire.

Does anyone know anything about emigration to Jamaica by young Scottish men? They were living on a small farm, probably not much more than a smallholding so I am aware that lack of employment could have been the reason, but I would love to know what their experience in Jamaica would have been like. Also, were Crescent and Bellfield plantations or just districts of Jamaica?

Am I the only person who thinks the last series was possibly the best since the novelty of the first one?  The stories of runaway spouses and bigamous marriages were interesting and quite surprising. Recently they had become very narrow and rather boring, and the American ones were a real disappointment. How many times can you hear Wow! and Amazing! Sarah Jessica Parker seemed completely overwhelmed that she actually had any ancestors at all.

World War One / WW1 records confusion
« on: Friday 23 October 09 16:19 BST (UK)  »
I need some help. I have been looking for my grandfather Thomas Murray's WW1 records on Ancestry and thought I had them when I found a record of enlistment with his name, birthplace etc and a regimental no. 7244. On looking through the images for Thomas Murray, I found what appear to be two other records of men called Thomas Murray both with the number 7244, and addresses in Manchester, Grantham and California USA. My grandfather was born in Souhport and lived in Altrincham, Cheshire until he died in 1956.

How can all these men have the same army number?

Cheshire / Berry Family
« on: Friday 11 April 08 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any info on the Berry Family of Altrincham in Cheshire? William Berry was the Manufacturer of Cherry Blossom Boot Polish, in Manchester. My Grandmother was in service in their house, I have only just found this out, so I have little or no knowledge so far. The company was said to be named after his daughter. (Cherry Berry, the mind boggles!!)

Durham / Turnbull & Co Bishopwearmouth.
« on: Saturday 28 July 07 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me? I'm researching my husband's grandfather, John Henderson, and have found a possible match in Bishopwearmouth in the 1881 census. He later became a Draper's Assistant, but I have found a Draper's Apprentice living with other apprentices and Draper's Assistants, Shopwalkers etc on the premises of a company called Turnbull &  Co. Does anyone have any information on this company please?

Lancashire / MURRAY - HELP
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 16:00 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the birth cert of my grandfather Thomas Murray born 1882 (probably) in Southport Lancs, which I believe is in the Registration District of W. Derby. Through other searches of censuses etc I have found out that his father was almost certainly Walter or Daniel (or both) Murray and his mother was Jane Ann Leigh.

In the 1891 and 1901 censuses mother and family are back in her home town of Altrincham Cheshire, where they stayed, but no sign of father. Also, the copy of his marriage cert gives his father's name as David. (Something I have not been able to resolve).

I have already got 5 certs in the name of Thomas Murray, all wrong, and there are 7 John Murrays listed in the birth index between 1881 & 1883 in W Derby. I know the GRO will check all these for me, but it will cost and maybe won't be successful even then, and I wonder if anyone has any other suggestions.

The Lighter Side / Inconsiderate ancestors
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 22:21 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone thought, like me that sometimes our ancestors were very inconsiderate in the way they lived their lives?
My husband's grandfather had the temerity to marry and die within 3 years, and all between censuses. Add to that his marriage entry on Ancestry gives his birth place as Scotland, and with a name like Henderson I've no chance!

« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 22:08 GMT (UK)  »
My g-grandfather from Malton was named Freer. Has anyone heard of this name before?  I had no idea until I started FH research, my mother never mentioned it. Is it a local Yorks name or does it appear elswhere? Any info would be appreciated.  Jac   :D
