Family History Beginners Board / Barnes family in Edmondton -10 boys
« on: Friday 28 August 15 19:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My Grandfather was Thomas Arthur Barnes b 1910 his mother was Clara Jefferies and father Jack/John Barnes - he had 9 brothers - the following are known to be Claras children Ralph and Stan who were twins, Charlies, Herbert Victor (Bert) Edward (Eddie), John is known to have had 4 boys older - Sidney, John who died in WW2, Frank and one other. I have details for Clara up to and including the 1901 census but nothing after that. The family are not showing in the 1911 census. It is possible that Clara and Jack/John did not marry although her death certicifate identifies her as Barnes.
any help on identifing Jack/John would be gratefully received thank you

Travelling People / Cinnaminta Cooper
« on: Thursday 27 August 15 21:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi - this is a long post so apologises in advance

My mother in law is Merreygold b 1932 Kent the daughter of Cinnaminta Cooper b 1893/4 Surrey d 1960 Kent a Romany Gypsy. Merrygold had two older sisters - both had names relating to flowers. She grew up knowing that her mother sometimes went off with the gypsies when they came and was not to talk of it outside of the family, her early memories are of her mother speaking a strange language that she could understand but others outside of the family could not and it was not until she was older that she understood why. Her father acquired a piece of ground in Kent near New Ash Green that included a woodland area that when as a small child the gypsies would often camp as they passed through.  Cinnaminta became housed following marriage. Her marriage certificate identifies her mother as Lucy Cooper In the 1901 Census she appears in The Tent at White Hall Farm Isle of Grain Hoo Kent with
Margaret Cooper widow 59 b 1842 Kent
Lucy Cooper dau single 26 b 1875 Kent
Landes dau single 21 1880 Surrey
John son single b 1882 Epsom Surrey
Menty dau 7 b 1894 Wandsworth Surrey
Harriet dau 5 1896 Croydon
Jane 3 1898 Farnborough Kent
Walter 1 1900 Frindsbury Kent
Frank Murphy lodger 54 b Ireland

I have details of Cinnamintas christening on 9th July 1893 Farnborough Kent which also gives mothers name as Lucy

Now this is where it gets interesting and any help in confirming my thoughts would be helpful

In trying to trace the family back I have found the 1881 Census which identifies
Uriah Cooper head married b 1811 Blackheath Surrey
Margaret wife married 1841 Blackheath Surrey
Eliza daughter single b 1863 Surrey
Cinderella single b 1865 Epsom Surrey
Henry son single b 1869 Epsom Surrey
John son b 1875 Paddock Wood Kent
Constantina b 1877 Paddock Wood Kent
Lavindia 1881 surrey

So wondering if there is a connection between this family and mine in 1901 further research identified the following information

1871 Uriah is also believed to be known as Spicer Cooper whose wife is Rosa sometimes known as Rosetta and that there is a baptism on 16 May 1865 of a sinamentey cooper to Spicer and Rosetta Cutler in Ashstead Surrey

1871 Census at Epsom Surrey identifies a

Spicer Cooper aged 57 B Blackheath Kent Hawker
Rosa aged 30 Kent
Geranuim daughter 11 Epsom Surrey
Lemmenta aged 6 daughter Epsom Surrey
Henry aged 2 Epsom Surrey

However no direct link confirmed between my 1901 census details and the family within the 1871/81 census until I found an old post from 2009 on this site which gave the same information for the 1871 census along with a marriage certificate for Spicer Cooker to Margaret Rosalinda Bishop in 1859  and details of a Jurayn Lucy Cooper born 1860 Epsom downs Jurayn is believed to be Geramum Cooper of the 1871 census and who was the contributors Gt Gt Grandmother. This Jurayn married Zachariah Amer.

I have found no details at the current time of reference to Cinnaminta's father. Returning to the 1901 census it is highly likely that whilst referred to as dau to the head it is unlikely that Margaret was the mother to the youngest four children and that the christening and marriage certificate details are correct and that Lucy is the mother

Any help in either confirming that i am following the right trail or any further information relating to my Cinnaminta will be greatfully received thank you
