Ayrshire / Catherine Brown b. abt 1806 Ayr, Scotland of Ochiltree
« on: Tuesday 08 December 15 03:11 GMT (UK)  »
My wife descends from Catherine Brown b. ca. 1806 Ayr, Scotland m. 10 April 1829 Ochiltree, Ayr, to Hugh Wight b. 6 Aug. 1801 Pluck, Old Cumnock, Ayr. Catherine and Hugh moved soon after their marriage to Ontario, Canada. Catherine is recorded in the 1851 (Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co. ON b. Scotland age 45) and 1861 (Brantford Twp., Brant Co., ON b. Scotland age 55) census. The census put her birth at abt. 1806. She died 1869 (Ontario) as per the family Bible of Hugh Wight and Catherine Brown. Hugh Wight died 1873 (Ontario), again per the Wight family Bible.

In searching for the ancestry of Catherine (and Hugh), I came across a family that matches well as parents of Catherine.  A Catherine Brown was born in "Burnockstown" Ochiltree, Ayr, Sep. 1806 (christened 14 Sep. 1806) to John Brown and Mary Kerr. Hugh and Catherine's children based upon the Scottish Naming practice would fit this family (the only glitch would be the fact that both fathers were John, but the first daughter was Mary Wight (named after Catherine's mother), and the second was Margaret Wight (named after Hugh's mother). Another clue is Hugh and Catherine's son William named his one son, Quentin Wight. This would fit the family of John Brown and Mary Kerr as they had a son Quentin. Also, a picture exists among the Wight family of the Brown family of Ayr.

This would be fairly cut and dry, however, every tree on ancestry has Catherine Brown daughter of John Brown and Mary Kerr married to a Meickle. I researched this family, and found (Muirkirk as opposed to Ochiltree) it did not fit the data, but... I have no definitive piece of data that counters their assumptions. Any help would be appreciated.

Dorset / A mystery exists for me in George Lampman b. 1806 Dorsetshire
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 13:49 BST (UK)  »
I descend from George Lampman, who was born 31 Aug. 1806 in Dorset - on his tombstone it reads as Dositshire, England. I cannot find any record in the OPR, or elsewhere matching my George. I know Lampman is not an English name, which is another mystery. Did he change his name? Was his mother married twice? Was he adopted? What I know, is that he had emigrated to Canada by 1836 (when he secured land in Dawn Twp., Lambton Co., Ontario, Canada). I also know that he married in Canada. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Kent / Marcellus Howard and Sarah Hodge of Westerham
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 03:21 BST (UK)  »
I descend from Marcellus Howard b. ca. 1775 d. abt. 11 Apr. 1830 Westerham m. 24 Jul 1804 at St. Peter, Tandridge, Surrey to Sarah Hodge b. 1774 Westerham d. abt. 28 Nov. 1846 Westerham (Sarah was probably the daughter of William Hodge and Sarah Coomber of Westerham). Sarah had been married prior to Abraham Coomber (at least 3 children with Sarah).

Marcellus Howard was a miller in Westerham, and had a least 8 children with Sarah (all born in Westerham).

I am having difficulty finding anything about Marcellus Howard's ancestry. You would think with such an unusual first name, he would be easy to track. However, such has not been the case. Any help would be appreciated.

I am a descendant of James Whitfield b. ca 1696 Headington, Oxford d. 4 Oct. 1760 in Twickenham, Middlesex and of Anne b. ca. 1692 d. bef. 4 Jan. 1749 in Twickenham, Middlesex. James was a peruke-maker, and gentleman in the Westminster area (St. James St.). James and Anne had the following children: 1) Margaret m. Lionel Spencer Berkeley; James d. young; Ann m. John Latimer; James Lumley d. young; Thomas d. young; John d. young; Thomas (2) d. young; Elizabeth d. young; Mary d. young; Eleanor m. Stephen Bland of Hammersmith (brother of John Highlord Bland - sword cutler to the King).

Anne's obit indicates that she was the niece of Robert Cotton, 5th Bart. of Connington, possibly through his first wife, Elizabeth daughter of ??? Wigston, Esq.

I am trying to sort out connections:
1) The connection to the Cottons - the obit makes it clear that there is a connection
2) Possible connection to the Lumley family
3) James Whitfield possessed a watch, that he lost in 1734 - he offered 20 guineas to get it back - it had an armorial on it - "3 lyons rampant" and included 3 seals - a family connection?

Would love information on this family...
