Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1901 census - John James Fishburn
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 23:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find John James Fishburn (my great grand father) on the 1901 census. He was born 1875 in Redcar, North Yorkshire. He married in 1907.
I have found the rest of the family in 1901 under the name Fisburn but John James isn't with them. :(
Now it occurs to me that there was a family story that John James served in the Boer War (it would have to be the second Boer War). So my question is, Is there a list of soldiers serving abroad at the time of the census?

My thanks in advance. :)

The Common Room / What's this date?
« on: Friday 24 November 06 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
I've been staring at this date for the last half hour. Is the month December? That's the best I can come up with but as this is on a marriage certificate, how many marriages are carried out on Christmas Day? :-\

Technical Help / Email Delivery Failure Notices
« on: Wednesday 04 October 06 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Is any one else getting bombarded with 'Failure Notifications' in their email box?

For the last week I have been getting a dozen a day. I am deleting them without opening them because I know I've not sent an email recently. I had wondered if a virus had gotten into the system (I don't open emails on my system, only on the ISP web site and I've run a complete check of my system-no virus or trojan etc)

Any one have any idea how to stop them?

The Lighter Side / Digging up the past - literally!
« on: Saturday 30 September 06 07:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've just done a 100 mile round trip looking for family graves and was really pleased to find my 4xgreat grandfathers grave (see picture attached)
What really pleased me was the extra info I found by cleaning the bottom half of the stone before I took a photo.
Well, I got home and printed the picture off to show to other members of the family and spotted something in the bottom left corner - the word "also" (see second picture)
Guess I will have have to go back and dig a bit deeper to see what else is buried below ground level!!! ::)

The Common Room / 2nd Cousins etc

I seem to have a gap in my education.  :-[

I know that children of our parents siblings are our cousins but can any one define 'second cousin' for me.

Thanks and regards

Berwickshire / 1841 &/or 51 lookup for Oliver in Coldstream
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 19:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm stuck trying to find any family details on my ggggmother Margaret Oliver born 1839 in Coldstream, Berwickshire. Father might be Thomas but I cannot be certain (late night scribbling that I can't remember or refind where I got it from!!).

I would be grateful for any details from either 1841 or 1851 census.

The Lighter Side / Cameras to avoid
« on: Wednesday 22 March 06 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am not a happy chappy >:(

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to my brother that I could do with a better camera to take snaps of places linked to the family and family graves etc when I go on my hols this year.
Very kind of him, he picked up a reasonably priced 5mp camera for me in the US. I live in the UK.
Unfortunately after three nights of struggling with it, it still refuses to transfer pictures onto my computer. I have tried the latest software downloads from the manufacturer. I have tried using just XP. The camera just will not let the pictures be copied into the computer. I have sent a couple of emails to Kodak to see if they are willing to help even though the warranty doesn't apply as I'm not in the US.
The camera is a Kodak C340 Easyshare (Easy my A***)

Anyway, rant over. Question is, what other cameras should I avoid when next I have saved up enough money to replace the complete waste of money above?

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Ernest Arthur Ketch 1891 or 1901 Cambridge
« on: Monday 06 March 06 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone find Ernest Arthur Ketch on either the 1891 or 1901 census for Cambridge?
I have tried every permutation I can think of and I think I'm starting to go round in circles.

I have already found he was born 1888, married 1909 (Lizzie Preston) and died 1954. All in Cambridge.
I have found Lizzie on the census's but no luck with Ernest.

Many thanks

Andy
