This is the Powis family from Stoke on Trent. I know some of the people on here, but a date would help me sort out the others. The man in the back row, in uniform looks like he was added later. Is that a police uniform? They were not a wealthy family, so I reckon it must be a big event they are celebrating? Any help narrowing down a year and info on the uniform would be much appreciated.

Berkshire / Those pesky Deacons!
« on: Monday 13 January 20 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have just been rechecking some dates and trying to fill some gaps in the Deacons (of East Ilsley) line. I am fine back to Crispin Deacon (1729-1805) and his parents , William Deacon (Deakon) and Joane. But I have come unstuck with relying on other people's trees. They have William's parents as Francis Deacon and Jane Hassett - I can't find such a couple that actually fit with the dates and local area. I am always wary of 'family' turning up from another county, just like that. Also, the trees say Joane Deakon was the daughter of a Thomas Whitaker and an Elizabeth Hornblower. On closer inspection, that couple had a SON, John not a daughter, Joane.
As Deacon is THE family name, I would like to get this as accurate as possible. Is there anyone out there who can confirm the Ancestry and LDS family trees or knows ANYTHING about this branch of the East Ilsley, Compton, Chieveley Deacons, please?

Antrim / Samuel McCartney Wilson
« on: Wednesday 01 January 20 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
My Stepson turns 40 this year and I would like to present him with a completed family tree for his birthday. I have traced his dad's family back to 1610, but his mum's family is presenting something of a problem. The only information I have is his Grandparents names and that they came from Ballymena. The names I am looking for are Samuel McCartney Wilson (1927-1980) and Sarah Balmer, also known as Sadie. That's it, that's all I have. To prevent a very lop-sided family tree I need help - please!

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Family Tree Charts
« on: Wednesday 31 July 19 20:42 BST (UK)  »
I have been at this caper for some years now and have got back to the 1590's on some branches. Just last week I decided to print out my husband's tree - all 36 pages of it, and it is not even a detailed tree!
Has anyone out there found and used a ready printed chart for their tree and, if so can they recommend a good one?

Family History Beginners Board / Rebaptism?
« on: Monday 28 November 16 17:43 GMT (UK)  »
It's been a while since I've been on this site, so apologises if this question has been answered.

Researching mine and OH's trees, I've now got back to late 1600's, early 1700's. I'm starting to find what looks like evidence of re-baptising of children. For example a Crispin Deacon baptised 10 May 1729, parents Francis and Elizabeth. Then a Crispianus Deacon baptised 04 Dec 1732, same place, same parents names.

There are other examples with 'latinized' names. It's a bit late for the Reformation, but I am wondering if this is something to do with that. Did people feel pressured into re-baptising there children with latinized names depending on the faith (or lack of it) of the Monarch? Has anyone else come across this?

Cheshire / Will the right Hannah Swaine/Upton please stand up!
« on: Monday 27 June 16 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Help and/or ideas needed. My ancestor, Sarah Ann Upton (1837-1894) had father James Upton and mother Hannah Swaine.

A James Upton married a Hannah Swaine 13 Dec 1836. In 1841 (and 1851) census Sarah Ann is living with her G parents, Thomas Swaine and his wife Hannah. Looking for the reason why, I found that a Hannah Upton died June 1837 age 21 (which just about fits)

BUT There is a birth recorded for a Thomas John Upton (parents James and Hannah (nee Swaine)) in July 1844.

Even MORE confusing - Thomas was HER father's name and John was HIS father's name.

Is anyone else's brain boggling? Does anyone have any ideas, PLEASE?

Shropshire / John Walker/Sarah Orinshaw of Wellington?
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
John and Sarah married in1775 in Shrewsbury. Their children were all born in Wellington. I have full details of their daughter, Sophia and her descendants but there are too many John Walkers and no record of a Sarah Orinshaw AT ALL, ANYWHERE!

Someone else's family tree (that I have since lost) has them dying in Fermanagh. I live in Fermanagh and there is no trace of them. HELP!

Staffordshire / Bit of a problem - need your advise!
« on: Saturday 21 November 15 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
After YEARS of trying to track down my father's mother's family, I've hit the jackpot! A remarriage had sent me off in the wrong direction. But thanks to RootsChat members, I am back on track.

The problem that is boggling my brain is as follows. After entering my grandmother's parent's details on to my Ancestry family tree I got a number of hints that filled in a lot more detail. But when I came to check on them more closely there was a problem with dates.

I have a John Ward, b.1798 in Uttoxeter. His parents are William Ward and Mary (Langley). Her parents are Richard Langley and Mary Allen - all in Uttoxeter. But research on the LDS site says William and Mary were married in Dec 1791 when Mary was 37 and nine months AFTER their son, Thomas, was Christened.

I know things are different now but to have your first child at 37 and not marry the father untill 9 months after the child is born seems doubley strange to me.

There IS another marriage of a William Ward to a Mary (Bateman) married in Stafford in 1789 (she was 20) This seems to fit MUCH better. BUT it is in Stafford not Uttoxeter and they are from Tutbury. My understanding is that folk didn't move around that much in those days - at least not 'country, agricultural' folk).

What do you think? Are my gut feelings likely to be right and at least 10 other family trees wrong? Even though they all do seem to have their information from the same source. ???

I would value opinions on this - it is giving me a terrible headache!

World War Two / Signals records for June '44 - June '45 (France/Germany)
« on: Wednesday 11 November 15 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
My dad, Arthur Cashmore, was a driver in the Signals. He landed in France 12th June 1944 and by June 1945 he was in Potsdam. I know he travelled through the Black Forrest, he always said it was so beautiful, he would like to go back there, but other than that I know nothing of the route he took.

My dad died in 1980. A few years later we took a coach trip to Austria, travelling through the Black Forrest. We wondered if we had been on the same road and seen the same houses.

I would really love to find out if we had travelled the same roads, 40 years apart and seen the same scenery. Does anybody know a way to do this?

I feel like trying this now as I have just filled in a huge chunk of his family tree that I had been struggling with for years (a remarriage sent me off in the wrong direction) and I feel like I am on a role!
