Family History Beginners Board / Traill, Dr Alexander Kirk

My grandfather 1875-1945 was a qualified Medical Practitioner (1900). I have discovered most of his career moves but am totally stuck for the period 1911 - 1918. He was in the 3rd Dundee Highlanders Volunteer Battalion, the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) as a Surgeon-Lieutenant w.e.f. 1903. He also worked in TB Sanatoria in Gloucestershire at least until 1911(as per Census) but ? what happened to him then. I know he was living in Braunton, Devon when he died. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
