Somerset / Green family, Bradford on Avon
« on: Friday 12 February 16 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
After a long lay-off from doing tree-searching, I'm back on it again. I'd like to try and plug some gaps with the surname GREEN in Bradford-on-avon, which has been in Somerset and Wiltshire at various times.
I have a lady called Ann Green in my tree....she's a G2 grandmother....born c1826 in Bradford on avon. Her parents are believed to be James and Joyce Green. Ann had siblings Eliza, Ruth, Amelia and James; the eldest Eliza being born possibly around 1808. It is thought the family attended Morgan's Hill Independent church, since two of the children were baptised there.
I am unable to find any info for James Green or a marriage to Joyce. If anyone comes across anything, I would be pleased to know.
If mods think this should be under Wiltshire, please move as you wish.

Armed Forces / Can someone help re Chelsea pensioner records
« on: Tuesday 30 December 14 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
I recently discovered that one of my ancestors had been a Chelsea Pensioner. I looked up his details in the records at FindMypast, but was a bit bemused by the findings that the search gave out...I don't fully understand what to do with them (if there is anything that I can do with them).
The document transcribed was an attestation for the year 1862; my ancestor was 18 years old. It gives his attestation corps as "Military Train", it also gives his service number. There is a box number and a box record number (British Army service Records 1760-1915)..and that's about it.
Now I have no head for military records stuff, so can someone tell me where I should look next, or am I unlikely to find any further info?

Somerset / Bishops Foundry, Wellington
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 13:34 BST (UK)  »
Wasnt sure whether to post this under Occupations or here. Its a bit of an official request, really, because I'm helping with sorting out a collection of wooden engineering mouldings that came from Bishops Foundry in Wellington. I'm interested in finding out a bit more about the foundry itself and who worked there, owned it, how long it lasted, etc. Has anyone written a book on the place, or can anyone point to suitable references?
If moderator wishes to move the post elsewhere, please do.

Somerset / Mystery Martha from Shipham
« on: Monday 31 December 07 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have already compiled a reasonable amount of info on my Stock ancestors from Shipham, but have one irritating problem; I can't locate a marriage for one of them. My g-g-g-grandfather Farmer Stock was born in Shipham around 1776-1780 and married a lady called Martha. Their (known) first son was born c1821 in Shipham but, invariably, all the subsequent children's births seem to come before the start of the civil registers.
Shipham parish registers online don't go as far as the 1820's, and Cheddar parish records are not online to search. I was wondering whether there were any other popular places that people went to, for getting married, at that time.....just in case the marriage didnt happen in either of these places. Martha appears to be from Shipham, if the 1851 census is correct, but I can't really do anything other than guess, from Shipham baptisms around the 1780's-90's, who she might have been.
If anyone happens to see any marriages relating to Stocks in the late 1810's-1820 ish, I'd be interested to know.

Glamorganshire / Splotland School; any info?
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 15:56 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any general information about Splotland Board School, Cardiff? The head teacher in the early 1900's was C. Whitaker. I took this information from a book prize that belonged to my grandfather, given to him for school attendance between 1900 and 1901; he'd have been about 11 years old at this time.

Ireland / Carrey/Carey: Ireland to Wigtonshire
« on: Sunday 25 November 07 21:42 GMT (UK)  »
After a long time searching many Scottish records, I have pretty much given up hope of finding any references for the birth of my g-g-g-grandfather, William Carrey, known to have come from Glenluce, Wigtonshire c1804.
The surname seems almost non-existent in Wigtonshire, and the one or two that I have found (spelt the same way, with two R's) seem to have come from Co. Derry, Ireland.
I'm now having to guess that William's parents were very likely Irish people who moved from Ireland to SCotland in the early 1800's, no doubt a one-way trip because I doubt if they'd have been well-off enough to return.
I seem to be on my own with researching this surname in this particular area; has anyone come across any Carrey/Carey surnames in the early 1800's, around Northern Ireland? and who also appear in SCotland?

England / I can't take it with me, so who gets it?
« on: Friday 29 June 07 15:40 BST (UK)  »
This may seem a bit of a dismal question....but....if I accumulate information about my family tree, plus photo collections, during the remainder of my life; what's going to happen to it when I'm no longer here?  :(
My family tree isn't spectacular, or famous, but all that effort put into assembling it during my lifetime, it seems a shame that it could all go to the bin. I doubt if my son would keep it all as a family "heirloom".....and he's the end of the line, so to speak.
What are other people planning to do with theirs?

Somerset / Cheddar families
« on: Wednesday 27 December 06 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have put up a Rootschat webspace at www.cheddarfamilies.rootschat.net

It covers a small number of families in Cheddar and Axbridge, but also extends out to others in Chard and beyond.
I have covered only those that relate directly (or almost directly) to myself, but there might be something of interest for other people.

Technical Help / Locked out of FamilySearch.org
« on: Tuesday 24 October 06 08:59 BST (UK)  »
I've just been prevented from accessing the 1881 census and other tabs at FamilySearch.org this morning; up came the following message:
"......Your access to FamilySearch.org has been temporarily suspended. Your computer or a computer at your location has sent a large volume of requests to FamilySearch.org and as a result access to FamilySearch.org from this location has been temporarily suspended. Usually the suspension occurs when a computer uses software to automate requesting information from FamilySearch.org from any computer in your location. If this message appears again, contact the vendor who sold you your software to obtain the latest release".

I've used this website for ages and never ever had a message or problem like this before. I dont have any automated-request software on my pc (that I know of), and I've got spyware-detection programs in place.
Anyone got any ideas what has happened here?
I cant send a message to the Familysearch.org webmaster either because I'm locked out of all the tabs, including Help and Contact.
