Photographer:  J. Kelly  (John Kelly?)
Location: Coatbridge, exact business location unknown
Date of photograph: 1880s-1890s?

No rear markings on the photos.  I've tried to find some info on J. Kelly but so far not found much that's helpful.

I'm only guessing at the date of the photos, a proper estimate by an expert would be very welcome!
Unknown man and woman, presumably a pair as they were kept together.  If anyone can also guess an age for them, I would very much appreciate it!

Thank you very much again :-)

Photographer:  Howie Jnr. (James Howie Junior)
Location: 60 Princes Street, Edinburgh
Date of photograph: serial number '36191' - most likely Q2 1878
(see http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/PP_D/pp_howie_junior_cartes_de_visite_-_dating_of_photographs.htm#back)
I have uploaded this photo to try and help anyone else who may want to date a Howie Jnr photo.

Unknown man.  If anyone can guess an age for him, I would very much appreciate it!
Yes, It's likely to be a Frisken or near relative again.

Thank you for all your help and the very good information on these pages!

Photographer:  unknown
Location: unknown (most likely Berwickshire, Orkney, Edinburgh or Glasgow)
Subject:  "Mrs Walker"

An estimate of the date the photograph was taken, and your best guess at the age of the female subject, please.

This may be the mother-in-law of Agnes Frisken (1821-1898).  Agnes was the younger sister of George Frisken from [1].  Agnes married William Walker, a Mason's apprentice.  William's mother was Catherine, born in about 1791.  Would her age seem to fit this photo?  Or would this be Agnes "Walker" after her marriage?

Photographer:  W. Laubach (Wilhelm Christian Laubach)
http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/pp_i/pp_laubach.htm#a
Address: 13 Antigua St., Edinburgh
Date: between 1865-1870
Unknown person (likely Frisken near relative)

An estimate of the date the photograph was taken, and your best guess at the age of the female subject, please.

I'm unable to make out the name of the photographer clearly, but perhaps someone already has an idea.  I will try searching via the census records.

[edited to add photographer and date information]

Photographer:  D. McDonald (Daniel McDonald ?)
Location: Kirkwall, Orkney
Unknown person (likely Frisken family member)

An estimate of the date the photograph was taken, and your best guess at the age of the male subject, please.

I understand that he may be literate (book as a prop), and the square corners of the photograph indicate pre-1872?  Is that correct?

I've made a very brief forray into the census records (via OFHS) for Kirkwall in the 1800's.  Daniel McDonald was listed as a Photographer in the 1871 census as aged 28 and a "Photographer".  In 1881 as a "Formerly Photographer"(?!).  And finally last entry I can easily find for 1891, living at no.6 School Place in Kirkwall as a "Photographer" again.  He is listed as being born in Naim, Naimshire.

This may be one of the older children of George and Isabella features in photo [1].

Thank you for all your help!

Photographer:  W.B. Davidson (William Brown Davidson)
Location: Duns (Dunse), Berwickshire

Unknown 2 individuals (husband and wife?), ages unknown.  A date estimate for this photo, and perhaps a guess at their ages, please.  Does their clothing say anything about them?

If anyone has seen other nice examples of Davidson photography, or has any references, I would very much appreciate it.  Thank you for your help (and patience)!

Photographer:  D. Davidson & Son (Duncan Davidson and William Brown Davidson)
Location: Duns (Dunse), Berwickshire

Unknown 3 individuals (mother, daughter and son?), ages unknown.  A date estimate for this photo, and perhaps a guess at the ages of the family members, please.

Does this woman seem to be the same person as in the previous photo?

Is the woman in mourning dress?

Thank you again for your help!

Photographer:  D. Davidson  (Duncan Davidson)
Location: Duns (Dunse), Berwickshire

Unknown 3 individuals (parents and young girl?), ages unknown.  A date estimate for this photo, and perhaps a guess at the ages of the family (I am really not good at that!).

I have started a full family reconstruction and date timeline for the individuals associated with Davidson family photography business.    In summary, Duncan Davidson (1829-1881) appears in all of the critical census records for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881.  He travelled to New York in 1853 and was listed as a Gardener on the ships passenger records.  No record of his return date, but he appears in 1861 in Eyemouth with his new wife Magdalene Lothian as a Photographer and their young son William Brown Davidson aged 4, who was apparently born in the USA.
In 1871 Duncan was listed as a Photographer in Duns, with his family; his son William Brown Davidson is 14 and a scholar, and a Robert Lothian is listed as brother-in-law and also as a Photographer.  The family reconstructions show that Robert Lothian was indeed the brother of Magdalene Lothian.
At the 1881 census, Duncan is listed as a Photographic Artist, but William Brown Davidson is listed as a 'Fancy Goods Merchant'!  Robert Lothian is listed in 1881 in Dalgety, Fife as a Photographer.
Duncan died a few month after the 1881 census, on 17 July 1881.  Presumably that's when William Brown Davidson took over the business.  William Brown then left left Berwickshire and arrived in Boston, Mass. on 8 Aug 1883 and remained in the USA until his death in 1912.  I can only assume that the Lothian family took the Photography business in Duns after his departure - I have two further photos taken by A. Lothian (Adam Lothian) in Duns around 1900 and 1905.

I would love to know if there are more examples of these marked Davidson photos out there, and if any have precise dates tagged on them?  I have read a couple of other forums threads here about Davidson and Lothian.

Thank you very much for all your help!

Dear experts,

The next 4 photos that I have are all from Duns (Dunse) in Berwickshire.

This first one is marked as "Photographed by Thos Scoular New Town Dunse", presumably a Thomas Scoular, although I can find no information on such a person in the area who may have been a photographer.

As before, any information at all - no matter how trivial it may seem - would be very helpful.  An estimate of the date of the photo, and perhaps guesses at the ages of the family (?) in this picture would be very much appreciated.  Do their clothes help to date the picture and say anything about them?
