Armed Forces / 3rd, 4th & 7th Queen's Own Hussars photographs
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 21:12 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather served in the III, IV & VII Queen's Own Hussars during the interwar years, so I've been trying - so far, in vain - to locate any regimental photographs from this period in order to see if it's possible to identify him in any. Does anyone know of any resources for these? Does anyone have relatives who served in these regiments and have any photos of your own?

He didn't serve in the Great War so wouldn't be on any from then, so I'm really looking at 1920s/30s.

I have contacted the National Army Museum but date-wise nothing turned up apparently.

Thank you.

EDIT: updated to include the 3rd Hussars also.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / William Geoffrey Mobley (known as Geoffrey)
« on: Friday 04 August 23 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find information on William Geoffrey Mobley, born 1918 in Sheffield, on behalf of his niece. He was known as Geoffrey and served in the war. He is believed to have married a Burmese woman whilst stationed in Burma either during or just after the war. I can find no record of him either marrying or dying in the UK, but I think he did return to the UK at some point and may have married an Englishwoman later in life.

Any information or leads greatly appreciated!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Holdsworth: Henry, Harry, Harold...
« on: Tuesday 23 August 22 14:46 BST (UK)  »
On the 1911 census Harry Holdsworth (of 6 Oswald Place Gelderd Rd Leeds; folio 21, piece 26891) has a son called Harry, 23, and a son called Harold, 4. They're by different mothers.

Could anyone help me find deaths for both, and possibly also a birth for Harold? I've found births for his younger siblings Nelly (1908) and Walter (1911) with mmn Wrighton, but I've had no luck with Harold, or indeed a marriage for his parents (Harry and Emily Wrighton).

Part of the problem here is that there are quite a few Henry/Harry/Harold Holdsworths and some of them seem to have switched names around.

Any help appreciated!

Lincolnshire / Ellen "Nellie" Kettlewell
« on: Thursday 18 August 22 11:48 BST (UK)  »
b. 1885 Waddingham, Lincolnshire
m. 1907 Lincoln, Lincolnshire (to, I think, a soldier named William Poole)

Does anyone have anything for her? All I've got are the birth, marriage and an 1891 census with her parents (John & Maria).

I've tried both surnames and Ellen/Nellie but can't find anything after the marriage, or any Poole/Kettlewell births. I'm thinking they both emigrated.

FYI, there is an unrelated Walter & Nellie Poole in Birmingham on the 1939 Register.

EDIT: Sorry, William Poole, not Walter!

A strange thread, I know, but I am trying to find out what became of someone on one of my family trees, and at this point all I can think of is to try to work backwards.

Do you have a male on your family tree who was likely born c1880s in Surrey or the surrounding areas, but for whom you have nothing for or prior to the 1891 census? Is there someone you've never been quite sure of, whose history just seems to appear out of nowhere at some point after 1891? Perhaps someone with what appears to be a fictitious name or background you cannot match up with other available information. Do you have someone from the Surrey area with 1901 and 1911 censuses, but without a matching birth registration, and a big hole in their records before 1901?

If this sounds familiar, please give this thread a read-through and see if it's possible we have the same man: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=746403.msg5938659

A long shot, granted, but you never know...

Surrey / Lost in the ether: John & Eliza Jane Davis
« on: Friday 26 May 17 22:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is something I've been stuck with for almost a year now, so I thought it about time I asked for some help!

I'm trying to find a woman named Eliza Jane Watson in 1871 and 1911. She was born in West Dean, Gloucestershire in 1858, and is with her family in Coleford for the 1861 census. Her parents were John and Elizabeth Watson, who emigrated to Iowa at some point during the 1880s.

(Eliza) Jane married George Horne in Folkestone in 1879, and subsequently John William Davis in Windsor in 1900. I have found Eliza on the 1861, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records, but cannot find her in 1871 (age 13 -- quite possibly a domestic servant somewhere) or in 1911, when presumably she will be with John, whom I cannot locate either.

According to the 1901 census, John is around the same age as Jane, was born in Westminster, and is a worker in a linoleum factory. I don't yet have a copy of John & Jane's marriage certificate - I will get one at some point - but I'm not sure it will be of much use in finding him in 1911.

John and Jane had a daughter, Lucy Horne b. 1889, Chertsey. In 1891, (Eliza) Jane and Lucy are living together as lodgers in Staines, Middlesex, as Jane Davis and Lucy Smith -- I think this is due to an error by the enumerator, who has confused Lucy with the Smith family she and Jane are lodging with.

In 1911, Lucy is living with her elder half-brother Percival Horne. From what I can gather, Lucy was a domestic servant all her life, and died in Wandsworth in 1959. It doesn't look like she ever married, though I've no idea if she ever had children as she's only 20 on the last census.

I cannot find either John or (Eliza) Jane in 1911, either together or apart. Presumably both are under the name Davis, but I've ruled out every possible match I've seen so far. As far as I know, Lucy was the couple's only child to survive infancy, so there isn't another child they would be living with. By 1911, Jane only has two surviving children from her first marriage - Percival and Frederick - and both are accounted for on census records.

So far I've only found John in 1901, but of course he has a very common name and I have no idea who his parents were, only that he was apparently born in Westminster... but the very same census also states that his wife was born in Merthyr Tydfil, which she wasn't.  :P

Any takers?

I'd love to know what became of John & Jane, and I have no idea why Jane is AWOL in 1871... all the family bar her are accounted for at home, and I can't find her as a servant or lodger in the local area. Given that she and George Horne later married in Folkestone (1879), I have considered that she may have been working in Kent by 1871... but she'd have been very young for a trip like that, and so far there's no trace of her.

Hi all,

If anyone would be willing to help decipher this inscription on the last page of my grandfather's King James Bible I'd be most grateful.

So far, we think it says:

love & mercy
heal humanity
ability to save souls
full sanctity
succour, a life temporal

Or at least those are suggestions I've received.

However, the quality of the handwriting makes it very difficult to be certain, and I am totally oblivious to the choice and meaning of these words. Is it a quote or a religious passage of some kind, or simply jottings?

Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Lanarkshire / HENDRY and WYLIE families of Glasgow
« on: Sunday 08 January 17 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone from the Glasgow area would perhaps remember any of my HENDRY and WYLIE relatives. I have been piecing together a family tree over the past few years and have managed to get in contact with a number of relatives, but I am very much interested in the social history as well as the personal.

These families lived primarily in Springburn and Cathcart, and perhaps the most well-known member would be Dr. James Brown HENDRY (1893 - 1966), who was physician and homeopath. He and his wife Sarah Minnie REA (1893 - 1985) ran a hotel in Glasgow... the King's or Queen's Hotel, I believe. I am not 100% of the name, but perhaps people familiar with the area will know. They had a son named Raymond - also a doctor - and the family were long-standing Plymouth Brethren.

James appears as the signatory on several of his relatives' death certificates, including his nephews Andrew WYLIE (1906 - 1945) and Samuel WYLIE (1908 - 1942).

I am wondering if any older users from the Glasgow area may remember James or any of his family, as I believe one or two of them were quite prominent figures. If you have any vague recollection of people by the name of Hendry or Wylie who were Plymouth Brethren then are very likely to be from these families. The older generations were Irish but moved to Glasgow in about 1900, as was fairly common at the time.

Thanks.
