Ireland / Ross Keen Ireland
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 04:17 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone please advise me if they have heard of Ross Keen? This is from the 1851 Census.

I have tried the Irish Time placename search etc.

Any advice, or perhaps a phonetic translation of this name, may help me.

Thank you,
Pat

Armed Forces / Advice Please
« on: Monday 02 October 06 01:28 BST (UK)  »
I have read most of the posts and replies in this forum and I am grateful for the help they have given me so far.

I have my ancestors birth date. and place of birth and he survived the war. In 1915 he would have been old enough to enlist he was born in 1896, that he was in the air force, and came down and broke both his wrists. I thought perhaps he had transferred from the army, say the Manchester Regiment, especially when I saw one on this forum had done this and then gone back later to this Regiment. I have checked the Medal Rolls, there are three with his name, but the Roll does not actually identify if several are of the same name, the information is limited. He is not on the Manchester Roll of Honour on the Spinning the Web site. Other than his wrists he was healthy, but I cannot recall any mention of active service except this.

Could someone advise me please what I can do next, I cannot visit the archives and the last time I looked at asking a researcher to check his service record, the fees mentioned were more than I could afford.

Any advice would be really appreciated,
Thank you,
 Pat

US Lookup Requests / 1870 Census of Rhode Island
« on: Tuesday 27 June 06 02:15 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate it if someone could help me. I have James Quigley,  a shoemaker, born 1825, or thereabouts in England. His wife and family is residing without him in Yorkshire in 1871. In the 1880 census he is residing with them in Brooklyn Kings NY.

His brother, Peter, was previously residing in Rhode Island with his wife and child in 1860, but by 1870  he was imprisoned in California.

It is possible that James Quigley born c 1825 may be in the Rhode Island area before going to NY and I would appreciate it if someone could help me in this respect. I could not find James on a passenger list, but his wife and younger members of family  came out in 1872 and were on the Australia. An older child James Peter, born 1852, England did not accompany the family, so it is possible that this son may be also residing with James senior in Rhode Island.

Any advice or help would be appreciated also a negative result.

Thank you in advance,
Pat

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census St Briavels
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 01:44 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate any help in finding : William Peveral, born about 1774, and his wife Sarah.

William was alive in 1851, age 77, he was described as a widower, and he was apparently born at St Briavels, which is only 2 miles away from Hewelsfield. (I have checked the 1841 census for Hewelsfield at the LDS centre some time ago but I no longer near to a Centre).

Unfortunately his surname widely varies, in that he has been described as being Porvell, Pevral etc.  Any P folowed by a vowel and then a v would probably be him, around 60 years of age depending on the rounding in this census. Could be a miner or a Labourer.

I know this is a complex search and if no one can help me I will fully understand, but thankyou anyway for reading this. It is my last ditch attempt at trying to find him, and his wife, that is if she is still alive.

I have the above the census as follows:
P.R.O. Reference  HO 107/2443
1851 Census of St Briavels
WOOD Mary Widow/er 38 St. Briavels
Sarah 12 St. Briavels
Elizabeth 9 St. Briavels
Harriet 7 St. Briavels
Mary 4 St. Briavels
John 1 St. Briavels
POWELL William Father Widow/er 77 St. Briavels
Source http://www.allthecotswolds.com/
If anyone has a copy of the original transcription I would appreciate help in defining William Powell's name for me.
Is it all possible that this could be read as Pevral, Povrell or any other variations other than Powell. :) :) :)
This would really help me.
Many thanks if anyone can help me.
