Other Countries / 1703 HCA case of Captain William Pead - evidence given in Dutch or Danish?

Hi,

I am at present transcribing a case involving the Privateer Captain William Pead operating out of Barbados on his Brigandine 'Dragon'. This is an appeal to the High Court of Admiralty ( which he lost ) and involves a man who claimed he was a naturalised citizen of the King of Denmark. One page is in another language to English ( see attachment ) but when I put it into the translator it seems not to translate from Dutch ( which is what the translator says it is and then cannot translate it ) or Danish. It may be that I have transcribed the words wrongly from the handwriting or that this being a case in the early 1700s that the language is archaic. It is relatively short a section in a long case.

Is anyone adept enough to be able to attempt 1. a transcript and identify the language and 2. translate it ?? I am afraid it is beyond me.

London and Middlesex / James Pead ( husband of Sarah Durdant )

I am trying to find the burial record of James Pead, coachman of London.

He was married to Sarah Durdant on 25.03.1780 at St Luke Old Street, Finsbury.

I have deduced that he must have died between 1805 and 1807 because:
His son James's apprenticeship dated 21.05.1805 has 'son of James Pead, of Aldersgate Street, Coachman' however
His other son Robert George's apprenticeship dated 02.06.1807 has 'son of James Pead, of Aldersgate Street, Coachman deceased'
Also his wife Sarah took out an insurance policy dated 18.07.1810 and is described as widow.

I have searched and searched and can find no burial record. It is very important as burial records at this date generally record an age and this is needed to confirm which James Pead in Suffolk this guy is. I have reason to believe this as the 1795 Will of James Pead of Wenhaston cites his nephews James & William Pead coachmen of London.

Many years ago I was in contact with researchers into the Durdant Peads of London ( Sarah's maiden name was used as a middle name for many of James & Sarah's descendants but I lost trace of them and emigrated to Portugal.

If anyone has any information on a burial record I would be so grateful to know.

The Common Room / Nephews and Great Nephews in wills before 1800

Hi,

I am trying to get my head round the apparent illogic of a will I have dated 1795. It is incredibly detailed which should be wonderful but there seems to be a problem. The testator mentions quite a few nephews but as I know about when these are baptised it seems apparent that their father could not be the testator's brother.

I know kinship in old wills can be subjective but have any of you come across instances when someone called a nephew has turned out to be a great nephew instead?

I am struggling trying to transcribe and translate the latin will of Thomas Pydde of Cringleford, Norfolk 1500. This is as far as I have got and I hope the post does not create spaces where none exist like the last attempt to make this post. If anyone would like a go at transcribing the will ( image attached ) please do. It would help me a lot as I have several to do from the 1400s and 1500s and they are similar handwriting:

Norfolk / Abbreviations in 16th Century Cringleford Manor Court Rentals MSS

Hi,

I am looking at the 16th Century Manor Court Rentals for Cringleford. They are very interesting because members of my family (in the variant Pydde and Pede ) appear quite a lot.

I am trying to understand why on nearly every line another line appears underneath in a different ink. Also quite common is the use of what I believe may be an abbreviation which appears in the form of 'Mo' with another 'o' or what might be a 'b' above the 'o' in 'Mo'.

Does anyone know what this abbreviated word might mean and what the significance of the second line in another colour ink signifies in these types of records ??

Norfolk / Norfolk Consistory Court Administration for Walter Cowper 1579

I found a reference to a NCC Administration in NORCAT for William Cowper of Norwich dated 1579. This is supposed to be in NCC administration act book 1579-1581, fo. 6 .

From what I can see on familysearch they have the Consistory Court Act Books for 1579 although not actually for the precise date range quoted in NORCAT, however there seem to be no folio numbers indicated. Has anyone any experience of using the Act Books who could give me some advice how you use them without trawling through the entire julian year of 1579 as I am attempting at present? There will be many hundreds of pages to search otherwise. I would really appreciate some help on this.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / St Peter, Ipswich, Suffolk Burials 1723-1729 Peed

Hi,

If anyone may be in a position to look at the original microfiche of St. Peter, Ipswich, Suffolk for the following 3 entries I would be very grateful. I am now based in Portugal and so even buying the microfiche has been made impossible since Brexit because of VAT rules.

The 3 entries are:

27.06.1723  John Peed, of Witnesham, single
25.10.1723 Thomas Peed of Nacton
24.06.1729 Mary Peed, of St. Mary Elms, Ipswich

What I am looking for is whether any of these entries have an age mentioned. This is important as I am trying to link each with particular Peed/Pead family groups in Witnesham. If any other details are recorded I would be grateful to know too.

I cannot find out if Bishop's or Archdeacon's Transcripts exist for this parish in this period. I suspect the detail would be the same though as the parish burial register.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Guildable in Portsmouth

Hi,

I am looking at the 18th Century Rate Books for the poor rate in Portsmouth. Although there are headings for areas like Buckland & Kingston which I recognise from when I lived near Portsmouth, there is one heading called 'Guildable' which I do not know.

Was this a geographical area of Portsmouth in the 1700s ??

I have a marriage record 0f 3rd October 1703 for Burford Shropshire which reads:

Marryed Nichi Piede of Nash labda & Susan Shepher p.c.m.

Does anyone know what p.c.m. stands for ??
