Westmorland / Joseph Farrer (Farrar) who married Rebecca Fawcett in 1791
« on: Monday 14 September 20 11:00 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about Joseph, Rebecca and their family. They are my 5xGreat-Grandparents and I can pretty much trace the descendants of my 3xGreat-Grandfather (their Grandson and another Joseph) into the twentieth century and present day in some cases.

Joseph and Rebecca married in Greyrigg near Kendal in 1791 and died in 1843 (Mansergh)  and 1848 (Burton-in-Lonsdale) respectively. The Farrers were a well established Grayrigg family at this time.

This Joseph is NOT the son of Thomas the Quaker of Grayrigg but another man with the same name who was living in the same area. I say that because I have a copy of the will of Joseph son of Thomas the Quaker which implies this Joseph wasn't married and did not have children. The Josephs also had different death dates and occupations (and years of birth).

I also have a copy of the will of Thomas Farrer eldest son of "my" Joseph and my current project is to try to trace as many of his descendants down to the 1911 census as I can. This isn't my direct line but I am trying to be methodical in my research.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across any of these HERBERT names? Joseph was a boot and shoemaker, born in London in 1835, he married Jessie Catherine Williamson in Edinburgh in 1858 and their surviving children are James Tod (born Edinburgh 1859) and Charlotte (b Edinburgh 1864). Another child, Elizabeth died in infancy.

I have them on the 1861 census but no further trace of the family. I think there is a James Tod Herbert in New Zealand in the 1920s and as the spelling of "Tod" is unusual it could be the same man or a relative. Any help gratefully received.

Durham Lookup Requests / Harbert / Herbert (or varients) St Mary, Durham
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 16:35 BST (UK)  »
Could any kind person please check to see if there is a baptism for a Mary Harbert (the last name may have a spelling variation) around 18 January 1797? The LDS index gives the parish as "St Mary" so I don't know if that is St Mary Le Bow or St Mary the Less, although I would take a guess at St Mary the Less. Ideally I'd like to know who her father was. Her mother's name was Ann or Anne.

There is no hurry for the information so please don't make a special trip.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / BARKER in Barnsley
« on: Wednesday 20 December 17 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
I'm seeking information on the BARKER family who were living at 57 Brinkman Street, Barnsley in 1911. I have traced the family backwards through time but wonder what happened to the 7 surviving children?

The names and year of birth registrations are:

Thomas b 1872
William b 1883
John b 1885
Joe b 1890 (the GRO index has him as Joah)
Sarah Ann b 1876
Lucy b 1879
Elizabeth b 1885 (she married a Thomas Gill and there were children)

the other four children died in infancy :(

Any information as to descendants would be gratefully received.

Durham / Anthony Bowron and Mary MacDonald, Romaldkirk
« on: Friday 06 October 17 21:49 BST (UK)  »
Anthony Bowron married Mary MacDonald in Romaldkirk 23 August 1817. Anthony was a blacksmith.

I have found them on the 1841 to 1861 census returns (Anthony died in 1868), I then have Mary living with a niece (actually niece by marriage) on the 1871 census. Mary died in 1879.

Anthony and Mary had at least 4 children, William, Ann, Jane and Anthony. If Mary is the Mary I think she is there was also a child born before the marriage, George MacDonald born 1810.

George is my direct ancestor but we don't know who his father is. There are no bastardy records that mention Mary or George or Anthony although the bastardy records do appear to be good. All I can conclude is that no complaint was made about the father of the child or that the child's father acknowledged his son and paid maintenance.

My own father has had a DNA test done which has come back with a very unusual male line  haplotype - well that is what the testing company say.

I'd really like to find a male line descendant of Anthony Bowron who either knows his male haplotype or would be willing to have it sequenced. That way we would have more idea about George's paternity!

I also wonder just how rare Dad's male line haplotype actually is .......

Tyrone / Harvey family, Derryloran, Cookstown, Tyrone.
« on: Thursday 18 May 17 14:22 BST (UK)  »
Arthur HARVEY was a tenant of James C Lowry and held land, plot 9 at Coolkeeghan according to Griffith's valuation of 1859.

From the parish records of Derryloran (CI) it appears that Arthur's wife was Jane and they had the following children, year of birth/baptism in brackets):

James (1837)
Ellen (1839)
William (1845)
Hamilton (1848/9)
Alexander (1852/3)
John (1855)

Does anyone have any further information about this family? I think it is the same Hamilton Harvey on the 1901 and 1911 census. He was a carpenter and lived at Loy.

I am especially interested in Alexander though.

Arthur died in 1878 age 66 according to the parish record.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / George Miller O'Neal / O'Neill in Bowes, NRY
« on: Friday 18 March 16 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
George Miller O'Neill was baptised 4 October 1847 in Bowes. The mother is Jane O'Neill and no father given, so probably illegitimate.

He is on the 1851 and 1861 census as "Grandson" (last name now transformed into O'Neal) in the household of Robert DONALD (actually MACDONALD) Robert died in 1870 and I am not sure what happened to George. I think he may have emigrated, at least two of Robert's sons did, one to Canada and one to Australia.

I also don't know who George's father was. I would guess that his father was a MacDonald as there is no marriage between an O'Neill (O'NEAL) and no Jane in Robert's family that I can find.

Devon / BICKLE in Devon
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am completely stuck with my husband's Bickle line.

I have a Thomas BICKLE born about 1837 who I think married Elizabeth WALTERS 12 August 1856 in Whitchurch, Devon. If that is correct Thomas' father was William BICKLE. Thomas died in 1871 in Easington Co Durham.

I'd like to find out where the family originated and trace back a little further.
