I'm trying to work out whether the lady in this photo is the mother or the sister of the two boys. The back of the photo is captioned "Robert Smith" and "Claud Smith" - they being brothers born 1882 and 1887 respectively. The other name is "Harriet Smith" which could be their mother b.1851, or sister b.1877.

Looking at the boys and their birth dates, I'm guessing the photos was taken early 1890's? The female does seem to have a "youngish" face, but are the clothes too old for her to be a sister?

Would it be possible to colourize the photo? I tried using a basic free colour program (sometimes works okay, and sometimes not). When I tried colouring this photo, the seated boys always comes out a horrible grey colour.

Thank you.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Please Date Photo - Benson, Australia
« on: Wednesday 29 December 21 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
Would it be possible to date this photo of Robert Benson in Australia, please? I have an idea myself, but would like some other opinions too. The photo is endorsed "Robert Benson, wife and daughter", however, I don't know whether this is the original caption, or somebody's guess? The following may assist;

Robert Benson b.1877 and d.1943. He married wife Barbara Graser b.1886. They married 1910 and had a daughter that same year.

Apparently his wife left the country without Robert and didn't return. There is no other record of a second marriage, or another child for Robert.

Thanks

Devon Lookup Requests / Requesting a Visit to St.Michaels, Cotleigh (please)
« on: Wednesday 09 June 21 10:31 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching a number of my ancestors who were reverends of St.Micheals, Cotleigh; Rev Maximilian Wolcot (1700's), then 3 generations of Revs Michell (from late 1700's to 1800's). I have all the relevent records/newspaper articles pertaining to them, but I would like to know if there are any plaques, memorials or other references to them inside the church.

In 2018 I visited the church (from Australia) but it was locked. I tried the church warden's phone number but was unsucessful. Before my visit I messaged the local commnity website (which includes contacting the rector) without response, and have done so again recently without response. From my research indicates Rev Wolcott and the Michell reverends (and members of their families) were buried there, but I did not see one headstone pertaining to their names on my visit.

I was hoping a visit inside the church might be an option to see any records of their names, and to photograph those records. Unfortunately, I will never have the opportunity to visit the church again.

Thank you

I'm just trying to confirm a Norfolk Island birth record for Rebecca Dorset / Rebecca Watson who was born 23 Dec 1792 to parents Sarah Dorset and Robert Watson.

I've had this date on my records for 20 years, but have never quoted the original source. I would really like to know where I got it from, and is there any chance of getting a copy of the original document for confirmation. I'm sure I saw the original information some years ago, but never recorded it. Yes, that was a bad mistake!

Thank you

England / Why Doesn't Parish Burial Record Include Polly MICHELL (nee WOLCOT)?
« on: Sunday 03 May 20 12:08 BST (UK)  »
There are 2 Burial Records here for Cotleigh Parish 1768.

The top record appears to be the original Cotleigh Parish Burial Record, and shows "Polly, the wife of Jas Michell, Rector, of Cotleigh, January 5th"

The bottom record is the Devon Bishop's Transcripts for Cotleigh Parish for the same period, but the burial of Polly Michell has "vanished". This record was transcribed by Polly's husband, Rev.J Michell July 7th 1768, but he's not included her. Both original and transcript records appear to be written in the hand of Rev.James Michell.

In the transcript he does write "This is a copy of the Register Book belonging to the Parish of Cotleigh, by me". However, looking at previous and post copies he has written in this book, he uses the phrase "a true copy" or "an exact copy".

So my query is, why has he left his wife out of the transcript, and why has he written just "a copy" rather than "a true copy" or "exact copy" as he normally did?

Was this omission on purpose, by mistake, or maybe he was just  too emotional to include her? Was there any reason why he wouldn't want her death to come under notice of the Bishop?

Just wondering.............?

Occupation Interests / Australian Nurse's Uniform
« on: Saturday 28 September 19 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anybody can identify this Australian nurse's uniform from around 1905-1910? This is my great aunt, and I was wondering whether she could be a dental nurse, rather than a hospital nurse?

I'm trying to solve a mystery regarding her illegitimate son born 1909 who's father nobody knows. The son was given three christian names with the third name being unusual - "Pittar". There were only a couple of people named Pittar living in Sydney around that time in Sydney, including a father and son dentist. I was wondering if she could have been a dental nurse working at the dental practice, and had a "fling" with one of them? Just a theory, but it's the best I can think of.

England / ANSWERED: Correct Date of Marriage for David Bandinel and Elizabeth Stallenge?
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if somebody could enlighten me in relation to the London marriage of David Bandinel and Elizabeth Stallenge at St.Olave, London?

The original church records has their marriage as the last marriage of the year 1599, that being 30 March 1599, then the year 1600 then commences from April immediatley after. I do understand that is the way calendar worked back then, but the company that transcribed the marriage have the date of 31 January, 1599, and I have also seen the date recorded as 31 January, 1598 elsewhere.

I know the year could be mixed up because of the old style calendar, but this shouldn't affect the month...........should it?

I know RootsChat are bit hard on Copyright breaches, but am I allowed to attach a copy of the original 2 line entry of this marriage just to confirm my reason for thinking the correct date of marriage is 30 March, 1599, and not 31 January?

Canada / Causes of Death for Gordon Watts and his wife Mary, One Day apart?
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
Just wondering if anybody with Canadian researching experience (not me) could help me out with this query?

I've found the burial details (per Ancestry) of Gordon WATTS aged 40, on 4th Feb 1840 in Montreal. What intrigued me, his wife Mary WATTS, nee SPONG, only aged 25 years was recorded on the same burial record having died the next day on 5th Feb, 1840. They were both buried on 7th Feb.

I would really like to find out the causes of their deaths, seeing they were both reasonably young and died a day apart.

I don't require any further information, as Gordon WATTS is an ancestral great uncle, and I have his birth, parents, siblings, marriage and children's details, but his and his wife's deaths are of some interest to me.

Armed Forces / Lieutenant Walter NUGENT, Jersey Island Garrison
« on: Monday 12 November 18 04:23 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the military background of my 4 x great grandfather, Lieutenant Walter NUGENT, who was Fort Major and Adjutant of the Invalid Garrison of Jersey Island. This is what I know of him so far;

He was born County West Meath, Ireland abt.1736 (those facts according to his headstone), and d.26/5/1789 on Jersey Island. He married Esther BANDINEL 14/3/1761 on Jersey Island.

Militarily, I know he was Lt Walter Nugent of Major Drake's Company of Invalids on Jersey in May 1779. The 1787 List of Officers in the Army show him still in that same position, but adds Rank in Regiment 12/5/1779 and Rank in the Army 2/20/1757. In June 1789 his position was filled by another officer, indicating "Fort Major and Adjutant of The Garrison vice Walter Nugent, deceased".  I presume to be in an Invald Company, one would have to have some disability such as a permanent wound? His son-in-law, Stephen WATTS was also in charge of an Invald Company on Jersey, he having only one leg.

I would like to know of NUGENT's career before 1779 if possible? I thought he may be identical to Lt.Walter NUGENT 43rd Regiment who was wounded during the Quebec Siege on 13/9/1759, and/or  Lt.Walter NUGENT 43rd Regiment who was wounded in the West Indies 24/1/1762. The 43rd Regiment was Irish, and sailed to America 1757.

My biggest concern for that theory is my NUGENT's marriage on 14/3/1761 on Jersey Island is between those 2 woundings, though it is possible? Their first known child was not born until Dec 1766 on Jersey.

Thank you

Les
