South Africa / Thomas Irwin Duncan
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
Born 4 DEC 1917 to George & Mary Robson Duncan (nee Irwin). Known to have travelled extensively in South Africa from around 1970 onwards, possibly Pietermaritzburg, Jo'burg or Cape Town He may have worked in Sports Clubs. He may have divorced an Irene Jocelyn Chatfield/Tatham/Duncan c.1971 ( a 2nd marriage) but is believed to have had another partner after this date.
A daughter from his first marriage would like to confirm his date of death, which is rumoured to be 1997.
I have tried various of the recommended web-sites with no success, but admit to having no experience with S.A. research at all.
Would be happy for any suggestions of routes of inquiry we can undertake before making official application with so little evidence.

regards,
odessa.

Northumberland / ROBSON, Ann b.abt 1827 Ryton
« on: Tuesday 14 February 17 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping for some advice please. I usually research in Cheshire, so I am not very familiar with your area and registration districts. Ann Robson(single woman, sometimes enumerated as a widow) b.abt 1827(Ryton or Greenside) was last seen on the 1901CR at 48 John Street, Gosforth, she then lived with one of her sons Thomas Robson aged 38. By 1911 Thomas is living at the same address, but has now married. Since Ann Robson doesn't appear to be on the 1911CR at all, I was expecting to find a death registration 1901-1911 in the Castle Ward - would this be correct if she died at her last known address? If she was buried in this area would All Saints, Gosforth or St Nicholas, Gosforth be a likely burial place, or was there a municipal cemetery available at this time?

There are quite a few Ann Robson's registered with in this time frame, so I am just hoping to narrow down the odds a little before having to decide to look for a church record or pay for several death certificates from other registration districts.

Armagh / Finnegan, Drumcree
« on: Monday 22 August 16 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Very new to Irish research, so any help would be most appreciated. Looking for connections (on behalf of my dtr-in-law) to a Henry Finnegan, possibly born c.1848 Drumcree.

He married in 1869 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, but may have returned to Armagh as the birth registration of his first child Squire John Henry Finnegan takes place in Armagh in 1869.

marriage details - 17 JAN 1869 Henry Finnegan/21/bach/Farmer/Drumcree/John Finnegan/Farmer m Frances Ellen Louise Bryar/21/spinster/Cambridge St, Charlton cum Medlock/Squire Bryar/Foreman Tailor.

We do have a possible registration of death for Squire Bryar 4Q 1879 Lurgan, so it is possible that both families were resident at one time.

Staffordshire / Mary Wood b.1790 dtr of Enoch Wood (potter)
« on: Sunday 17 November 13 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'm currently researching the family of Thomas Ives Brayne Hostage (1791-1862). His wife was Mary Wood of Burslem. They lived at Winnington Bank nr Northwich in Cheshire.
A possible baptism for Mary Wood is 23 APR 1790 to Enoch & Ann of Burslem.

I would like to try and prove a link with Enoch Wood, and I believe there is a announcement of the marriage of T.I.B.Hostage & Mary Wood in the Staffordshire Advertiser 19th NOV 1816 which might help, but I'm unable to find on-line with the British Newspaper Archives.

Also if anyone knows the details of the LWAT of Enoch Wood (died 1840) and knows how his daughter Mary is decribed/named that would be extremely helpful.

I do know that the Registers of Electors for Pire Hill, Burslem note that from 1832 - 1861 Thomas Ives Brayne Hostage of Winnington had voting rights connected to Seven Freehold Houses and Land known as Fountain Buildings, which I believe was the site of Enoch Woods Pottery Works.
Also in 1861, 2 of Mary's sisters were living with TIB & Mary Hostage in Winnington, both died at Winnington and both were buried at St Helen's Church, Witton (Northwich).

They were:- Edna Stanton and Sarah Lidiard

Any help much appreciated, as my knowledge is mostly confined to mid-Cheshire.

Developing site, but already 30+ Cheshire Chapels have been listed with photo's and varying degrees of historical references. Also a good overview of the PM movement - Education, Sunday School, Banners, Temperance etc.
Lists of Ministers, Lay Preachers etc.

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / St Mary's, Handsworth - marriages
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 11:40 BST (UK)  »
I believe these are at Birmingham Reference Libary?

Would anyone be able to look at the marriage entries for

Elizabeth Rebecca TAME = James Allen 20 DEC 1831

Mary Ann TAME = Thomas Simmon(d)s 23 MAY 1825

I'm hoping that they are sisters and I'd especially like to know who the witnesses were for each event.

kind regards.

Lancashire / SEFTON Street, Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 20:33 BST (UK)  »
Can some one help with an address where a death took place in 1846. It is described as "Shipyard, Sefton Street". Given that the time of death was 2 a.m. and the illness leading to the death was certified as 2 weeks duration, could the address be referring to cottages or terraces on land owned or leased by the shipyard rather than in the yard itself.

Would anyone have access to a dock-yard map, or the Tithe Map of that area that may show any possible housing...or am I completely off base in thinking the person concerned died at his home?

Lancashire / VERNON & Son - Liverpool
« on: Friday 17 August 12 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information on Vernon & Son of Liverpool, Iron Ship Builders.

I know Thomas Vernon the founder was born in Cheshire (possibly Davenham) around 1799 and he died in Wem, Shropshire in 1861 he was buried in Toxteth Cemetery SEP 1861.

First wife was a Christiana COHILL/COXHILL, who died in 6 MAY 1845 at Roscommon St, Everton - there was 1 surviving son from this marriage, John VERNON b.abt 1820 died 13 MAR 1874. Possible marriage to Ann HOLMES

Second wife for Thomas was Ann Heatley (widow) of Shropshire.

The details of Thomas's 2nd marriage to Ann Heatley (widow) show his father to have been Thomas VERNON, a Boiler Maker. But at the present time there is some doubt as to which Thomas Vernon this might be. There may be siblings for Thomas (junr.) that were involved in similar trades who also moved to Liverpool and later Kingston-upon-Hull.

any sighting would be most welcome - although I do have all of the census details thanks.

Can any one help with a marriage transcription/look-up for

Thomas VERNON to Christiana COXHILL at the Cathedral Church, Manchester on 26th MARCH 1821.

I'm particularly interested in which parish the couple nominate as their abode and the names of the witnesses.
