Hello all.
I don't really know where to start!

My Great Grandmother was Beatrice Seaward b.1903 - d.1961 born in Stapleton Workhouse, Bristol
her mother was Lilian Sarah Jane Seward b.1878 - d.1967 (I can't be sure who Beatrice's father was)
Beatrice's grandparents are James Seward b.1848 and Sarah Jane Bailey b.1848

Beatrice had at least one sibling, Perceval Rocket Seward who was born illegitimately.
Lilian had 6 Siblings:
Ada Ann b.1870
Henry E b.1872
Sidney W b.1875
James G b.1880
Alfred E b.1883
Winifred M b.1890

Beatrice was Raised by Kate Beer and Ernest Sandford. Kate was a nurse and took in Beatrice from birth. (Part of me suspects that Ernest was the biological father)
After Beatrice married Clifford Ernest Carpenter, she named her son Clifford Sandford Carpenter.

Ideally I would love to hear from any descendants of the above to see if I can discover more about Beatrice and the family in general. I would love to know if she ever got in touch with the family by letter or otherwise, but suspect I'll never know.

Many thanks in advance,

Pete Carpenter

Somerset / Thomas Carpenter b.(Abt.)1739 - d. 1821

Hi All,

Hopefully some of you helpful people can point me in the right direction!
I am trying to find out details of the parents of Thomas Carpenter born in Bradford on Tone in abt. 1739 and died in the alms house of Wellington, Somerset in 1821.

I am pretty confident of these dates from using freeReg and cross referencing against verifiable sources in my own tree.

I can't seem to find a marriage record for his parents (Thomas and Sussanah) or a baptism record for his Father Thomas; despite searching a broader time scale and extending the search into neighbouring counties.
This gives me the inclination that perhaps they moved into the area sometime between marriage and having Thomas? Would that be a fair assumption?

What would you try next?

Many thanks in advance!

Pete Carpenter

EDIT: Apologies all, I let my frustration get the better of me! I believe that I have now found the correct record. m. 1734 to Susannah Tucker. Very happy for feedback if this is found to be off the mark though AND I would still love find a record of his bith/baptism!

Gloucestershire / Beatrice Sandford/Seward/Seaward

Hi All, I hope somebody may be able to point me in the right direction.

My paternal Grandfathers mother was born 16th Dec 1903 in the Stapleton Workhouse Bristol to Kate Sandford nee Beer and Ernest Sandford.

While trying to research her I have noticed that, interchangeably, she is sometimes recorded as Seaward or Seward.

This is what I have found:
1. She appears to have been registered in the first quarter of 1904 (Bristol 6a 207) as Seward.
2. Her father (Ernest Sandford) died in 1910
3. 1911 Census, she is recorded as Beatrice Seaward, living with her mother, Kate Sandford in the Beer household (Kate's family)
4. 1916, Kate remarries to William Martin and Beatrice is adopted as Beatrice Seward Martin
5. 1925, marries Clifford E Carpenter with Maiden Name Seaward (Bristol 6a 422)
6. 1925, gives birth to my grandfather Clifford S Carpenter and records mothers name as Sandford, also my grandfathers middle name (Bristol 6a 179)
7. 1926, My Grandfathers sister, Jean is born, mothers maiden name also as Sandford (Bristol 6a 123)

Kate and Ernest married in 1901 but she seems to have been in the workhouse by 1903, Ernest dies in 1910 and Kate remarried 6 years later. Could Kate have been ashamed of Ernest for some reason so changed her name slightly?

Basically, I hope someone can help me fathom as to why Beatrice would keep changing her name?

Many thanks

Pete Carpenter
