Armed Forces / Miners and Sappers from early 1800's
« on: Thursday 03 April 25 03:33 BST (UK)  »
I would like to know what resources are available to find out who served in this part of the British Army in the early 1800's.  In particular it would include those who were posted to Ireland to do survey work.

I have searched some of the British Archives but I'm unsure of where else to look.

The date period would be between approx 1810 to 1835.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Australia / Record name
« on: Saturday 25 January 25 04:32 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a record on a census record and would like to know what you interpret the name as.

The record name I'm after is no 16.  It has been recorded as William Bay****

If it helps at all -
Record no 13 & 14 first names are Thomas
Record no 17 is Patrick Murphy

I'd appreciate your interpretation of the writing.

Warwickshire / William Cash birth
« on: Friday 29 November 24 02:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have William Cash birth record in Birmingham at about 1800 - parents listed as William and Jamima.

I cannot find a record of a William and Jamima marriage.

I have another James Cash born 1803 Birmingham - parents listed as William and Thomasina.

I have the marriage for this couple in 1799.

My question is James was a convict arriving in Australia about 1830 and his record states he has a brother William who arrived approx 6 years earlier.  James arrived on the Florentina.

The above record is the only William I can find who is also a convict arriving in approx 1824.  William arrived on the Royal Charlotte.

Is it simply a wrongly written mother or ?? for William.

I also cannot find a definite William after he was given his freedom in 1839.  There are 2 death records for 1845 with insufficient details.

Does anyone have any ideas.

Australia / How to find an ex convict's location in 1840's
« on: Monday 18 November 24 02:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a relative who is an ex convict.  He was given a Certificate of Freedom in 1842.

I have searched Trove and found he was in the Patrick's Plains area prior to his freedom release.

I would like to know what records I can search to find where he got to between 1842 and 1849 when he was married to locate him.

I've tried census, Trove, Ancestry, Family Search etc for records with nothing showing up for these in between years.  All we have to go on is family rumors.

Are there any other suggestions of where to look?

Staffordshire / Harper family from Staffordshire
« on: Thursday 26 September 24 03:38 BST (UK)  »
I've been slowly making progress for the Harper/Harpur family from Staffordshire and would like to seek assistance from those who possibly know more.
The family heads are Joseph born 1741 and Diana/Dinah/Dihanah Ince born 1748 both in Shropshire.
Children if I have it correct are:  Joseph b 1773, Mary b 1775, Martha b 1777, William b 1781, Philip b 1785 and John b 1791.  The births vary between Blymhill and Gnosall.

Anyone with any further information on this family particularly John who possibly married Suzannah Ross would help a great deal.

Thanks in advance for any assistance given.

Shropshire / Hince/Quine/Quiney
« on: Thursday 11 July 24 13:03 BST (UK)  »
I have potentially found a family tree connection but I'm unsure of the origins of the wife in the marriage.

The details I have found are:

Marriage 1 Oct 1769 Albrighton Near Wolverhampton,Shropshire,England
Joseph Harper and Diana Hince.

While there are Hince in and around Shropshire, I have found a Dianah/Dinah Hince/Quiney from the Isle of Man who seems to fit.

Can anyone shed any light if there is another Diana in Shropshire that could have married Joseph Harper.

I have other details of the Dinah/Dianah Hince/Quine/Quiney found in the Isle of Man if needed.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / First name of new born
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a record for a Doyle but cannot make out the first name of the newborn.  (See left on image.)

What confuses the issue is another record from Ancestry claiming John Doyle was baptised at Bellaghy on the same date.  I cannot find the record under the registers under Ballyscullion/Bellaghy.
(See right side of image.)

Are they one in the same person or should I be looking at a different registry for the Ancestry record?

Australia / Possible change of name opinion sort
« on: Friday 17 November 23 02:02 GMT (UK)  »
Many family members have been looking for this relative and my latest find could suggest our missing person has changed his name at some point.

Information to date (still unconfirmed):
Our hard to find relative is William Bowden born 1818 Chester, Cheshire.  Parents John and Ellen.
Supposedly arrived approx 1833 with both he and his father being miners'.

No one has been able to find out how he got to Australia.  We have records from December 1849 on - after his marriage.

I found a record of a William Bowden who arrived in 1833 as a convict on the James Laing, but died in about 1839 or so the record suggests.

I am wondering if this could be a possibility as a few of the details seem to match.

I would like your experienced opinions on this possibility.

Derry (Londonderry) / Assistance with fathers first name
« on: Saturday 05 August 23 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I have found a record of a marriage and cannot decipher the first name of the grooms father.

I have attached the record of the marriage (pdf)- look at the first one between Hugh Mackle and Mary Doyle.

The surname is crucial to finding out the correct Mary.

2 Mary Doyle's were married at the same church within 5 weeks of each other and both of their fathers' names were Louis.

Thank you in anticipation.
