United States of America / Michigan Supreme Court Records -1881-1882

I would like some advice on how to access Supreme Court Records for a An Intent to Murder Trial in the Michigan Supreme Court. I am wondering if anyone has any experience of where to go and which agency to contact.
I was very surprised to read in the UK papers that an relative of mine was charged, held in prison for nearly 12 mths before the case was heard before a jury. I have found references in "The Detroit Free Press" that the Jury found him guilty of intent to murder by poisoning. But a later UK newspaper report indicated that the Supreme court quashed the conviction and my relative was discharged.
I have searched the Internet, and a number of agencies handle only some aspects of this historical period. I am really only interested in the record for the quashing of the jury's decision.
Thank you. ( I live on Australia)
