Canada / 19th century Port Dalhousie Lock 1 property records
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for any information that might shed more light on my third great grandfather Thomas Murphy 1822-1877. Sometime after 1871 our family left New Brunswick for Port Dalhousie. In an 1877 city directory I found Thomas Murphy, boarding house keeper Lock 1. Thomas died in July 1877 in Port Dalhousie. I even managed to find a person or two that was residing at 'Thomas Murphy Lock 1.'

I am wondering if there might be any probate records that might indicate any particular property he may have purchased, mortgaged, or leased.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hello,

My name is Kevin Murphy. I am a co-administrator of the Murphy DNA Project at familytreedna.

I would like to invite any men with the Murphy surname and/or any other variation to please consider taking a Y-37 DNA test to start. I would highly recommend anyone with an incredibly extensive Murphy family tree to consider a Big Y test if you can afford it.

Just for those who may not understand, Y DNA testing pertains to the male line, inherited and passed from father to son. Any of the wonderful Murphy women out there, if you have a brother, cousin, any male relative who is a Murphy we would be most thankful for more to join. There are definitely many independent Murphy families that have arose in different parts of Ireland and we are excited to have been uncovering more about the origins of these families.

Please feel free to reach out to me by email with any questions. (*)

Michael Dyer and Catharine Manley end up in Port Dalhousie Ontario between 1868 when Elizabeth died in Glasgow and 1871 as they appear in the Canadian census.

In Patrick Dyer and Mary McDonald's baptism of one of their children in Port Dalhousie had shown one of the sponsors to be a John Rooney and Bridget Dwyer. I thought it may be possible that it was actually a Bridget Manley possibly a sister of Patrick's mother Catharine as there is an 1852 catholic marriage record from Glasgow between a John Rooney and Bridget Munly or Munley.
I did find a John and Bridget Rooney also residing at 101 Bridgegate in 1861, however there is also a death record for a John Rooney son of John Rooney and Bridget Manley from 1863 stating the child was 3 years old which could conflict with this record
1861 residing at 101 Bridgegate
John Rooney 50
Bridget Rooney 48
Mary Rooney 9
John Rooney 7
Agnes Dick 39

I also found an 1851 census of this family residing at 60 Old Wynd

Bridget Dyer 58
Thomas Dyer 24
Mark Dyer 20
Agnes Dyer 16
Bridget Dyer 13
James Dyer 11
Mary Donley 40
Roseanne Donley19
Margaret Twigley 35
John Muldown 40

I don't have much to go by and this obviously isn't definitive, but I believe I may be onto making a big connection in my family tree and would appreciate any guidance or insight anyone could provide.

Thank you

Scotland / Trying to trace further back
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 23:55 GMT (UK)  »
So my ancestor Mary McDonald who married Patrick Dyer is consistently listed as being from scotland in Canadian census records 1871 and 1881 Mary Dyer.

Her marriage record states her parents as John McDonald a foundry laborer and Rose Kelly. John McDonald is shown as dead January 13 1882 in Falkirk. An iron foundry laborer parents names Patrick McDonald laborer and a Janet McMillan. Widow of Rose McDonald
Rose dies in Falkirk 14 January 1891
Widow of John McDonald foundry laborer maiden name Kelly parents Henry Kelly Farmer and Rose Mackay.

In the 1861 there is this same couple John McDonald and Rose with one child Rose who is 9 years old.

In the marriage of Patrick Dyer and Mary McDonald in Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark in September of 1861 they are listed as Patrick 20 and Mary 19. Her occupation is listed as Mill Worker.

John and Rose are up there in age so it seems Rose would be the youngest child, but it seems odd that there don't seem to be any others in between, however I do recollect seeing an index of baptisms of children of theirs however I haven't found any sort of birth information on Mary McDonald.

I am just trying make some sense of all of this. It seems odd that she would be in Clyde while her parents were in Falkirk. If her Rose was born 9 years prior in Falkirk. I don't understand why they would move back and forth like that or how Mary ended up in Clyde, Glasgow in the first place. I am very confused as you may gather hahaha.

I will reference some earlier points from older posts which led me back a bit further below.

There is a John McDonald (47) a foundry labourer with a wife Rose (45) both born in Ireland living in Falkirk in 1861 with a daughter Rose (9) who was born in Falkirk.  In 1871 they are still there he is no listed as 60, she as 49.  John died there in 1882 age 72; his wife Rose Kelly died in 1891 the informant her daughter Rosey Connell informant.

According to the 1865 Valuations 100 Bridgegate was stone/ground so either it burned to the ground or it was an empty lot.

I have found Michael Dyer as tenant occupier of 100 Bridgegate in 1855 valuation rolls.

I found John MacDonald tenant occupier of 139 Saltmarket Street.
On the marriage record of Patrick Dyer and Mary McDonald it showed Mary's residence as Saltmarket.

My great great grandmother Catherine Dyer born July 11th 1862. Family arrived in Canada by 1863-64.

Parents Patrick Dyer born in Killala County Mayo Ireland. 1861 Census he is 19

His father Micheal Dyer 48 in the census. His mother Catharine nee Munnelly or Manley is shown as 38
His siblings include Bridget 16, Elizabeth 10, Mary 5, Sarah 8 months.

Patrick Dyer married Mary McDonald in 1861. Mary McDonald's parents are shown as John McDonald a foundry worker and a Roseann Kelley.

US Lookup Requests / Conradi. Birth dates or any information New Jersey
« on: Friday 23 February 18 17:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on what became of my grandfather's cousins.

Their names were (*) and (*)Conradi. (*) is shown as (*) in the 1940 census. From looking at their ages I gather that (*) may have been born in New Jersey aprox October of 1937. For (*) it appears to be about May 1939.

From what my aunt's tell me they both married. My uncle states that one of the sisters lived in Massachusetts where my great grandfather's sister Ella died in 1984.

I am trying to get in touch with that side of my family trying to preserve any old photographs of my ancestors and their siblings.

Ella's security death information indicates her last residence as

02174 Arlington, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA

If that helps at all

US Lookup Requests / Buffalo Naturalization records
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 19:54 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping to find a naturalization record probably from the 1850s or 1860s. I understand that the clerks office holds these records on microfilms.
I was wondering if these records might be indexed by year? I don't believe I will have any time to go search, but in the case I could I would like to know as much as possible to save time.
I am looking for a Charles Coughlin. Most census information on this ancestor of mine indicated that he was unable to read or write.

I am also looking for a Cornelius Sullivan in Buffalo listed as an Alien in 1865 NY census. 1875 he is listed as naturalized. Also from Buffalo. He was born sometime around 1840. Wife named Julia O'Neill.

Thank you

Surname: Dyer

I am looking for any records of birth or baptisms for the siblings of my great great grandmother.

There is a bit of confusion as you can see some siblings such as Rose might be mixed up in the census as far as their age goes.

I am looking for anything pertaining to Rose, Margaret, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jeanne or Mary Jane perhaps, and Bridget. Sarah is the youngest and Elizabeth was two months old in the 1871 census.

It seems Margaret and Rose were mismatched, however it is a bit unclear as to which is correct. I believe it is likely that Rose was older.

Kate's birth record from Scotland indicated the parents names as Patrick Dyer and Mary McDonald!

I have tried various combinations of the names and tried variations of the surname as well as misspellings I have seen such as Dire, Dyes, and others, but have been unable to find any birth records for them.

It seems they were in Port Dalhousie in 1871 and Toronto by 1881.

I have also been unable to find any death records for Patrick Dyer or his wife, however it is Patrick who died before 1881.

1871 census here.

1881 census here.

Anyone who can help me shed light on any of these mysteries it would be greatly appreciated. You'd be my hero!
