The Common Room / RootsChat Personal Messages and Photographs
« on: Friday 05 November 21 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
I was hoping to attach a couple of very old photos in a PM to another RootsChat user, but it seems that this is not possible in a personal message. Could anyone confirm if that is correct or if there is another way to attach an image in a PM, please?

Hello,

I'm trying to confirm a date of death for Susannah Wright, who was born in 1850 in Cobham, Surrey. Her parents were Abraham and Susannah Wright.

Abraham Wright was a millwright and wheelwright. As a point of interest, he was involved with Cobham Mill. In 1861, Susannah was living in Cobham with her parents and siblings. In 1871, she was working as a cook in Forest Gate, West Ham. In 1881, Susannah was living in Thames Ditton, Surrey, with her two children. She wasn't married. In 1891, she was living in Croydon, Surrey. Susannah had five children (born between 1875 and 1885), who all took her surname, as she didn't marry, which was obviously quite unconventional at the time.

Some of the info on census and other records, in relation to Susannah, is sometimes inaccurate for various reasons, so I just need to confirm a correct date of death, please.

Many Thanks.

Staffordshire / Coal Mining Monmore Green, Staffordshire
« on: Friday 13 January 17 23:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I just wanted to ask for some info in connection with the 1842 Report by a Commission on the employment of women and children in mines and the 1842 Mines and Collieries Bill.

My ancestor Susannah Primmer and her twin sister Mary Primmer were born in a workhouse in Leicestershire in 1830 and baptised in Ashby de la Zouch. Sometime between 1830 and 1840, Susannah was taken to Monmore Green, Staffordshire and I know that Susannah then worked as a coalminer. In Monmore Green, Susannah lived in the house of Benjamin Jackson and family, a mining agent, who was mentioned in the 1842 Report. Are there any other documents, which mention Benjamin Jackson in this context, please?

I am trying to find out more about what happened to Susannah between 1830 and 1840 and also the fate of Susannah's twin sister Mary Primmer.

Many Thanks.

Staffordshire / Looking for Weaver's horse drawn cabs in Wolverhampton.
« on: Tuesday 03 January 17 17:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I was told anecdotally that there was a small company of horse drawn cabs, known as Weavers and run by Edward Weaver (known as Ned Weaver) in the very late 1800s and early 1900s, in Wolverhampton. I can't seem to find any reference to it anywhere. I just wondered if anyone knows anything of it please?

Many Thanks.

Occupation Interests / Northumberland Stonemasons
« on: Sunday 01 January 17 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone could help. Are there any stonemasonry records (in existence) from the 1800s, which detail the names of stonemasons that worked on specific projects, please? It seems a 'long shot', but I thought I'd ask.

My ancestor William Beldon (who was born in 1858 in Newcastle upon Tyne) was a stonemason. He died of phthisis, which was apparently connected to his job. His father and grandfather were also stonemasons. His grandfather (also William Beldon) was born in 1809 in the village of Longhorsley in Northumberland.

I read an article about a stone bridge in another Northumberland village that was worked on by a number of stonemasons in the 1800s and the name Beldon was mentioned. It's also possible that W. B. (b.1809) may have worked in Dumfriesshire, but I can't find much comprehensive info. I imagine that a lot their work still survives, which is a nice legacy. I'd like to find out more.

Many Thanks.

Europe / Looking for help with German ancestry
« on: Saturday 17 December 16 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have been researching a German ancestor who lived in England and I am specifically trying to find out when and where he died. I believe that he may have returned to Germany, because I can't find when or where he died in England. I'm not sure how or where to access German ancestry records (in English if possible). I wondered if anyone could advise me, please? His name was Otto Johannes Herrlich (born in 1841 in Stettin Stadt). In the 1881 census, he was living in Merton, Surrey and is single. In the 1891 census, he is married and living in Lambeth. I know that he was living in the South East of England from at least the mid-1870s. I am related to O.J.H, but not to his German wife.
Many thanks.

Northumberland / Looking for French connections to Sarah Ellen O'Bryan (born 1858)
« on: Sunday 04 December 16 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm researching my ancestor Sarah Ellen O'Bryan who was born in 1858 in Newcastle upon Tyne. She was married to William Beldon (born 1858) and they had three daughters; Annie b. 1878, Frances b. 1880 and Eva Nathalie (known as Nathalie) b. 1890. I believe that Sarah gave birth to a couple of children in the 1880s who died in infancy. Sarah had two marriages. She later married Robert Simpson Bird.

I'm posting because some years ago, a relative mentioned that either Sarah's mother or grandmother was believed to have been French. However, I've looked into this and I can't find anyone French. Sarah's family seem to be Anglo-Irish. Her father Richard was born in Ireland and her mother Ann / Anna in England.

I'm wondering if I've been tracing the correct family line (the name O'Bryan often appears as O'Brien and even Brien), or perhaps I've overlooked something significant or perhaps my relative was confusing Sarah with someone else. If anyone is researching this line and has found anybody French :D, I'd love to hear.

Many Thanks.
